Chapter Eleven
~Enji's POV~
I arrived on the scene of a small fire I'd been called to and was more than a little surprised to see my father there. It looked like he was apologizing to some other man who appeared to be in his mid-thirties. Father spotted me and waved me over. The fire had been small and was already out, it had hardly caused any damages, I suspected I'd only been called to the scene because of my father.
"What?" I growled.
Father glared at me but said nothing about my rude behavior, "your sister assaulted this man and is now missing...thankfully he's not pressing charge-."
"She's missing?!" My heart fell before the rest of his words connected, "if she assaulted him, I'm more concerned about why he's not pressing charges." I shot the middle-aged man with the dark slicked back hair a scowl.
He didn't seem phased in the slightest by my scowl and offered me a cocky smirk that really got under my skin, "no harm done, it was a simple misunderstanding."
"Right." I didn't believe the guy for a second. "What did you do to her?" I demanded, "she wouldn't attack anyone without a proper reason."
Father looked momentarily worried which gave me pause. If my father was wary of this man, what the hell kind of business was he in?! "Enji, enough. You know Enya she's got a flare for drama, like your mother." That was about as far from the truth as it could get. Enya was nothing like our mother.
"Listen, tough guy, we're going to be brothers soon, we should try to get along. You're here to fetch me my little bride to be." The eerie man pat me on the shoulder dismissively. Just who the hell was this guy?!
My father looked concerned for a moment but recovered with a smile, "I apologize for my children and their deplorable behavior, Lorenzo." His gaze flicked to me, "go find your sister and bring her home immediately."
"No apologies necessary, its been quite a lively evening, can't say I've had such an exciting evening in a while." Lorenzo chuckled before his cold ice blue eyes shot in my direction, "I suggest you get to work, boy, you'd better find her soon." There was a threat behind his words.
"Or else what?" I challenged him.
"Or else I'll send out someone who will." He straightened out his singed shirt.
I shot them both a dark look and walked away. My phone in my pocket started to vibrate. I waited until I was out of earshot and retrieved it. It was Rei. What on earth did she want? I didn't have time. Sighing, I answered the phone knowing Enya would be upset if I was ignoring Rei's calls.
"What is it, I'm busy-?" I began but Rei cut me off.
"It's Enya. Something's wrong. She showed up a little bit ago with no shoes, running from who knows where trailing blood all over the pla-." Rei blurted before I cut her off.
"Is she alright?!" I panicked.
"I really don't know. She stopped responding to me. Enji, something's really wrong, please come home. I don't know what to do." Rei begged me.
"I'm on my way, don't let her go anywhere and don't answer the door for anyone." I growled before taking off at a run.
My driver didn't ask any questions and managed to get me home in record time with only a few minor traffic violations that I was willing to overlook for Enya's sake. I ran up the front steps and hurled the door open nearly giving our elderly maid a heart attack in the process.
"My sister?" I asked the elderly woman as she clutched at her chest.
"In the bathroom with the lady." She pointed to the hall bathroom.
I ran to the bathroom and saw Enya sitting on the edge of the tub in a daze staring blankly at the wall. Rei was kneeling next to her rubbing her back in a consoling manner. She looked relieved to see me and moved away so I could take over.
"Enya?" I called to her softly as I moved closer. I looked in the tub and swore under my breath her feet were bleeding profusely.
She didn't stir as I spoke to her.
"Enya?" I tried again and placed my hand on her shoulder.
Nothing.
"Enya, please answer me." I begged her as I rubbed her arms in an attempt to warm her up and shake her from wherever she'd disappeared to.
She blinked once before turning her head in my direction. "Nii-sama?" Her deep blue eyes were dull and lifeless. "Welcome home." She smiled though it was empty.
I wrapped her in my arms and held her tightly against me, "what happened?"
"Nothing. Nii-sama you didn't tell me you two were expecting." She tried to change the subject which worried me even more.
"Enya." I lightly caught her by the arms, holding her at an arm's length away. She avoided my gaze, "what happened?"
Enya looked over at Rei, "Nee-san, can I stay the night?"
Rei threw me a worried look before smiling softly at Enya, "of course, you're always welcome to stay with us."
"Enya." I shook her lightly; she was scaring me. "Tell me what happened."
Her empty smile fell away completely, "Dad took me to meet someone...they talked about me like I wasn't even there...and Dad traded me away like cattle, he said I have to marry Lorenzo-."
"Lorenzo?" Rei suddenly gasped.
"They can't make you marry any-." I began but cut off as Rei and Enya both threw me a pointed look. "...right...well, I'll do something about it."
"If it's the Lorenzo I think it is, you won't be able to." Rei frowned.
"What do you know?" I growled at her.
"Gossip circles can sometimes be useful." She pulled out her phone and searched something up before turning the screen to me, "this him?" Enya tensed as she looked at the picture, it was the same person. What the hell had he done to her?!
I nodded.
"He's one of the wealthiest men in the world...and there are rumors that he's a mafia boss..." Rei said softly.
His creepy aura made a lot more sense now. If that were true, the only reason he'd be free of suspicion was because he was great at covering his track or having others do his dirty work. Enya slipped back into a catatonic state. I shook her lightly but she wouldn't respond.
"Enji, she needs to disappear." Rei cried, "she has to run away, and tell no one where she's going, that's her only cha-."
"No!" I snapped, "she's not running away, I can protect her."
Rei looked doubtful but didn't voice her opinion.
"It's getting late, why don't you go on to bed." I suggested.
Rei frowned and left without a word.
I sighed and set to work doctoring Enya's bloody feet. She didn't react as I poured antiseptic over her wounds or as I was bandaging them up. My heart shattered as I looked at my fragile little sister.
My phone buzzed as I finished doctoring her feet. I looked at the screen, I had a new message, but it wasn't from any number, it was as the text had just formed itself on my phone. There was a picture of the elderly maid as she was walking to the bus stop to head home for the night with an accompanying text of 'take her home'. The message then deleted itself as if it had never been there to begin with, completely untraceable.
I felt my heart stutter in my chest. That was definitely a threat, but there was no proof or evidence I could supply to make a case. I swore under my breath and scooped Enya up into my arms. She was still catatonic. I hesitated, if I ignored it and kept her here, and the maid died, Enya would be distraught if she ever discovered the truth, she'd blame herself. I carried her out of the bathroom and headed for the front door feeling sick with guilt as I was overcome with a sense of helplessness.
How the hell was I supposed to save her?
She stirred a little once we got outside and turned her deep blue eyes to me, "Nii-sama, where are we going?"
I felt my heart crumble, "...home..."
Her body tensed in my arms and tears welled in her deep blue eyes. "N-no. P-please don't make me go back." She cried softly in my arms.
It felt like someone had reached into my chest and ripped out my heart. "I'm sorry." I choked. "It'll be okay. I'll figure something out. I promise."
She choked on a sob, "Nii-sama, please."
I kissed the top of her head on the verge of tears, "I promise. Please, have faith in me." I begged her.
She cried silently in my arms as I carried her to the driveway. There was a familiar car already waiting, father's car. Enya let out another sob and threw her arms around me, "no!"
I felt like I was going to shatter at her desperate cries. I hugged her tightly, "Enya, it's going to be okay." Our father's driver got out of the car and threw a worried look in Enya's direction, that wasn't a good sign. I clung to her tightly and pressed my face against hers so my lips were close to her ear. "I will save you; I promise."
The driver opened the rear door. My father was thankfully alone and threw a dark look in Enya's direction as she cried against me. "Enough of this drama, get in the damn car!"
I shot him a scathing look, "she's not marrying that creep."
"The contract has already been signed, nothing either of you two failures do is going to change that. Now put her in the car." Father said coolly.
My blood boiled.
Enya had shut down again.
I set her down on the seat nearest the door. She stared blankly ahead crying silently as I buckled her seatbelt. I leaned forward to kiss the top of her head and felt guilt coil around me, threatening to suffocate me as she pulled away from me.
"Enya?" I looked down at her in awe.
"...All Might would have saved me..." she said in a whisper soft voice.
I felt as if I'd just been slapped in the face and watched as the driver shut the door. The car pulled away leaving me feeling worthless in the driveway. My phone buzzed. Again, it hadn't come from any number, as if my phone had just spontaneously spawned a text message. There were only two words on the screen but it was enough to fill my heart with rage, 'good boy'. Just like before, the message was gone without a trace.
I stormed back into the house.
Rei stepped into the hall, dressed for bed and looked to me curiously, "Enji? Where's Enya?"
"I sent her home." I clenched my fists.
Rei bit her lip. "I know you don't like the idea of her running away, but it may be her only hope."
"She's not running away, don't put those kinds of ideas in her head!" I snapped angrily.
Rei said nothing more and retreated to our bedroom.
