Robbers in Repose

As bold and bull-headed
as newborn calfs
they broke in on the day

My plan was to make the best of it
but they carried my plans away

Usually I bar the gates
and secure every lock so tight
No random stranger visits late
Nobody gets in at night

Yet these brazen bandits
arrived when the sun was high
They introduced themselves
and were pleasing to the eye

Somehow I gladly entertained
as they went behind my back
No bit of simple trickery
No device of subterfuge they lacked

They were stealing minutes
after seconds
and then the hours too!

Oh let them be
I told myself
What harm
can it really do?

after all its a pleasant trade
for a nice daydream or two

Silly little scallywags
Friendly as can be at that
and so I dreamed the day away
right there where we sat

I found myself so very poor
and somehow happy for it
I drank and then drank some more
and let those pickpockets pour it

If the robbers in repose
come now to your porch
Be careful not to let them impose
on the fantasies that you horde

They may abscond with your whole day
and leave you in a mess
I know it's easy to be carried away
but try your very best

Get up and put your mind to work
Waste not much on frivolities
There are duties you should not shirk
No matter your leisure's qualities

Though you know you love daydream time
These thieves are no friends of yours nor mine
A flight of the heart is a great distraction
But you cannot succeed on a life of inaction
