💍 Chap 9 ~ An Evening to Remember

The café glowed with warm amber light that evening — candles flickered on every table, a string of fairy lights hung gently along the windows, and the piano gleamed in the center like a heart made of ivory and wood.

It was Colette's idea.
"A celebration," she'd said. "For music, for friendship, for love that's finally learned how to speak."

And so, the small café filled with soft laughter, the scent of pastries, and the quiet hum of a gramophone playing a waltz in the corner.

Daniel stood by the piano, his hands slightly trembling — not from nerves, but from the sheer weight of what he wanted to say. Elise stood beside him, her gaze tender, her dress pale blue like the sky after rain.

"Ready?" she asked, smiling.

"As I'll ever be," Daniel replied, his voice soft but sure.

When the café doors closed for the night, it was just them — Daniel and Elise at the piano, Henri and Juliette near the counter, and Colette polishing glasses with the knowing calm of someone who'd seen countless stories end beautifully.

Elise sat at the piano, fingers gliding over the keys as Daniel began to speak, his voice blending with the melody.

"I used to write words that only existed on paper," he said quietly. "But ever since I met you, Elise, I've found music in silence, poetry in glances, and love in the smallest moments — coffee shared, songs whispered, laughter between storms."

Her hands faltered for a heartbeat, eyes glistening. "Daniel..."

He smiled, pulling a small folded paper from his pocket — her first napkin note, the one that had started everything. "You kept my words," he said, "and I've kept your song."

He reached into his coat and revealed a small velvet box. "Now, I'd like to keep your heart, too."

The café fell still — even the candlelight seemed to pause.

"Will you marry me, Elise?"

She covered her mouth, a soft gasp escaping as tears welled in her eyes. "Yes," she whispered, smiling through her laughter. "Yes, of course."

The piano notes rang like bells as she threw her arms around him, laughter bubbling like champagne.

From across the room, Juliette clapped quietly, her eyes bright. "Oh, mon dieu, it's perfect," she whispered.

Henri, grinning ear to ear, raised his coffee cup. "To them — and to the café that brings love to life."

Juliette turned toward him, still smiling. "And what of you, Monsieur Dumas? No poetic words of your own?"

Henri chuckled, standing suddenly, nerves flickering behind his usual charm. "Actually..." He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small ring tied with a silk ribbon.

Juliette blinked. "Henri...?"

"I'm no poet," he said, voice softer now. "But I know that life feels right when you're in it. You bring color to my photographs, laughter to my quiet days, and chaos that somehow makes everything clearer. I don't want a single day without you in it."

Juliette's lips parted, surprise melting into emotion. "Henri..."

He took a step closer, his hand slightly trembling as he held out the ribboned ring. "Would you make my world your home?"

For a moment, time stopped — and then Juliette smiled, tears glimmering in her eyes. "Yes," she said simply. "Yes, I will."

Madame Colette, wiping at her own eyes from behind the counter, finally broke into laughter. "Two proposals in one night! My café has never seen such romance."

Elise and Daniel shared a shy, glowing smile, their hands intertwined. Henri slipped the ribbon around Juliette's finger, and she leaned into his shoulder, laughter quiet and content.

The café filled once more with music — Elise's piano, Daniel's voice, and the soft harmony of hearts at peace.

Outside, the night air shimmered with the memory of rain, but inside, Café Rendezvous shone brighter than ever — a place where love had found its melody, its laughter, and its forever.
