Chapter 1: The Alpha

(That's right, no info chapter this time! We're jumping straight into it!)

Myths are not stories woven from the imagination, but rather tales retold that do not fit neatly into the texts to history...

Such as the Wendigo, a mythological creature often depicted with rotting flesh but always as a humanoid deer creature. Stalking the deepest and darkest parts of the forest, waiting, watching for their next meal... Striking any human that strays too far into the forest to satisfy their unending hunger, only to further the extreme bloodlust that plagues them and pushing themselves deeper into insanity.

No one is sure of the Wendigo's existence, but that may be because no one is brave enough to disprove the myth murmured among the townsmen... Or, maybe that is because no one has lived to bring the truth to light...

(Y/n) Pov.

I swallow my fear as I try to calm my nerve, the beating of my heart pounding in my eardrums barely masking the sound of my footsteps as I slowly move around the dimly lit cabin. With every step, I take in every detail that surrounds me. The red floral pattern of the rug as I walk on it, the large painting that had been destroyed by the beast's claws, even the bloody corpse of my friend, Dominic, who had been ripped to shreds along with his signature dark green parka jacket, the many punk rock patches barely hanging on by a thread...

However, I quickly freeze and cut power to my flashlight after hearing a deep, guttural growl coming from the other side of the wall, my eyes fixating on the large opening only a few feet in front of me. I hold my breath, foolishly believing that it'd somehow help mask my presence as I strain my ears to listen for the beast's movement. My heart rate increasing once again as I hear a scraping coming from the other side of the wall, coming to a stop... right beside me.

Both the beast and I sit still for what feels like an eternity, waiting for any sign of the other's next move. And then, I hear it, a single word that sends a chill down my spine and makes my blood run cold as it echoes as if it were spoken by a spirit, "H̷e̷l̵l̷o̷?̸"

I recognize the voice. It was my closest friend, Kat. The beast is imitating her voice to deceive me, which only means that it has got to her and... eaten her. Not just killed her as it did to Dominic, it had to have eaten her to successfully mimic her voice.

As these thoughts ran through my head, I fail to notice the scraping begin on the wall itself. By the time I did, it was too late as the wall suddenly exploded into splinters, the beast's massive and lanky figure hunched down and crawling through the hole. I stare horror as it stands tall, revealing its twisted and deformed body barely covered in a silky white fur, now drenched in the blood of my friends. However, it only gets worse as the beast's hollow eyes land on me and the skull splits in two, as well as it's chest, to create a freakish mouth filled with razor-sharp teeth, stained with a deep crimson just as it's fur is.

The beast, which I can now identify as the Wendigo, once again mimics Kat's voice as it slowly stalks towards me, "H̴e̷l̴p̵ ̶m̵e̸,̷ ̴p̴l̶e̴a̵s̷e̴!̶" The Wendigo pleads, the pain evident in the distorted voice, taunting me, picking me up by my arm as I had been injured when it burst through the wall. Using its other clawed hand, it tightly grips my head, nearly crushing it as it does so, and drops my arm to hold me by nothing but my head.

I finally find enough strength to swat at the Wendigo, albeit too late as it brings my legs downward into its mouth, clamping down on and breaking them, causing blood to spray into the air as a sickening mist. My arms flail even more wildly as the beast pulls my body in two different directions, my neck stretching and tearing and it slowly decapitates me, finally ending with another bloody shower.

"Fuck me!" I exclaimed, pushing my seat back a bit as I watched the Wendigo devour my corpse, letting out a defeated sigh. I quickly tab out of the game and open up Relayze to unmute the group call with my friends, immediately being bombarded with excited and disappointed remarks about the last game. However, they are quickly silenced by Derek, as he joined the call after fulfilling his role as the hunter.

"That was brutal, especially with the blood shower at the end!" Derek practically shouted into the mic. I quickly open up the video chat portion of Relayze, just in time to see Kat's image as she begins to speak "Yeah, I thought you'd like the gore." She said with her casual tone we've grown to love, leaning back in her chair and taking a drag off of a cigarette, matching her posture with her tone.

(Sorry, her face wasn't cut off for the cover as an effect. But, I know that's not where you're looking!)

Suddenly, the screen is taken over by Dominic, still wearing the bloody and worn parka he had received from the dev team, his smile wider than ever.

"I for one loved the voices! I still can't believe that your brother got us characters in the game!" He says to Ellie, the social butterfly of the group who convinced her brother to not only give us early access to the game but also plug us into the game with convincing models and our voice lines. I feel another chill run down my spine, remembering how terrifying the voices were while I was so immersed in the game, "Yeah, but they'll take some getting used too..." I say, still unsettled by the realism of the game, especially with us being within it.

The screen once again changes as we all seem to take a turn speaking, this time displaying Ellie in her neon pink room, only being contrasted by her black sweater with a paint splatter pattern of green and pink.

"Oh c'mon (Y/n)! I know you get really into your games but these are just myths-" She giggles rolling her eyes, fixing one of her pink bra straps as she does so. I sigh, knowing that she'd give me the same speech she always does when anyone starts talking about anything folklore.

You see, our friend group was brought together through one common thing, our love of everything mythological. Or, something along the lines. Kat and I both are strong believers in almost everything you would here from the drunken rambling of an old man in a bar, Dominic loves to read about mythology and things that don't make logical sense, Derek and Kirk just enjoy a good story with a drink, nothing too extreme. Then, there's Ellie. Originally, she didn't want anything to do with us, probably thinking that we were just weirdos with nothing better to do.

However, her brother was really into mythos just as we were, and, to better relate with him she decided to try hanging out with us and explore the world of mythology. At first, she was the odd one out, never really fitting in and watching from the sidelines. But, as Kat helped her settle in, she found that she enjoyed being apart of our little group and listening to the stories like Derek and Kirk, albeit, less open-minded.

Suddenly, I'm pulled out of thought when Derek begins shouting my name, "W-what?" I stuttered, focusing on the screen once again. But, I'm slightly taken aback when I notice that everyone else had left the call. All that's left is Derek's image with a concerned look evident in his teal eyes as he plays with the strings of his grey sweatshirt.

He leans back in his chair with a sigh when notices that I'm paying attention, "Thought I lost you, dude, you spaced out for a while. Like, a long while..." He said with a chuckle, stretching his back and showing off the arrow pattern that wraps around his chest. I shrug, now sporting my own grin, "Sorry, I was thinking about other stuff." I say being truthful. But, Derek's grin grows two-fold as he leans in toward the camera, "Or, were you thinking about Kat?" He whispered with a wink.

I feel my face heat up a bit, Derek knows that I've seen Kat in a different light ever since high school and he constantly teases me about it, "Oh stuff a sock in it!" I retorted, obviously flustered. He chuckles at my reaction, "Whatever dude, I still remember when you saw her panties on a call and you nearly lost your shit. But, that's not what I want to talk about." He says, waving me off and sitting back in his chair.

"So, while you were exploring your future with Kat, we were talking about next week." Derek explains, throwing in one last taunt, "And because everyone else is free, I've invited everyone to a getaway in the woods!" He exclaimed, throwing up his hands to add to his excitement. After watching my reaction for a moment, he sighs, "Basically, we are all going to camp out in a cabin my parents are letting me use..." He said, sounding defeated.

I scratched the back of my head, thinking about the situation, "I don't know man, is it even big enough to fit us all?" I ask, curious has to how big the cabin is exactly, "Definitely, although... Someone will need to share a room if you come along. And so far, Dominic and Kat have offered to share with you.~" He says, probably trying to entice me into coming along... and, it's working...

(Alright, it's a bit shorter than my usual chapter, but, this was more of a prologue rather than a full chapter. Also, this won't be a big harem story like my other stories. In this one, there will only be three love interests, one being Kat, and two wendigoes picked out by my discord... We were very horny, don't judge us.)
