Stranger
The following days went by fast. I spent most nights doing homework so I could stay caught up while I was away. The days at school were fun as kids settled into another school year. Almost all of my classes I had with a friend, or with Micah, Cade, or Cole.
And when Monday came I was ready and excited to go to the cabin. Mom allowed me to bring a friend and that friend was none other than Becky. We packed Mom's car and my truck with our clothing and supplies. Then when we were finished we climbed into the vehicles and made our way north.
Becky kept changing the radio station to pop and I would turn it back to country. "Lacey let me listen to my music."
I laughed inwardly at her poutiness. "Now now sugar plum, this is my truck. So I get to choose the station."
She tried changing it again but I slapped her hand away, "Now now. If you don't behave no candy for you."
Becky laughed and rolled down the window. While Diablo barked happily in the backseat with our luggage.
A few hours later mom pulled over into a way station and got out of her car. Becky and I followed suit, and stretched our legs.
Dalton hopped out of mom's car with Diablo on her red leash, as soon as her paws hit the ground she took off at a dead run. Forcing Dalton to run with her or let go of her leash and then have to search for the golden dog.
Mom shook her head, went to the back seats of her car and pulled out a basket containing our lunch. "Lily you are amazing, have I told you that already?"
Lily laughed and tossed Becky a Powerade, "Yes you have Becky. I've lost count on how many times you've said something like that. But I bet that if I had a quarter for every time you've said that, I'd be filthy rich."
My phone started ringing on the dash of the truck just as mom opened the bowl of fruit salad. Reaching through the window I grabbed it and looked to see who was calling, Dalton. Oh boy... "Now what do you want."
He snapped, causing me to jump slightly, "Come get your dog. Now."
He hung up before I could ask him anything, so I turned to my mom and Becky and told them I had to grab Diablo from Dalton. I ran off in the direction that I had seen Diablo dragging Dalton off to and slowed my pace only when I heard Dalton calling my name, directing me to him by his voice.
-I don't see what the problem is. I wanted to run so I ran, not my fault people hate running....
Diablo wagged her tail as I came in view of the two, who's that?.... A young man was standing next to my brother, he was talking to him in a hushed voice but looked up at me when Dalton turned his attention away from the man.
I looked between the two curiously before Dalton shoved Diablo's leash in my hand and practically pushed me away from them. "I'll be back soon, save me some food will ya."
I smiled slightly and nodded, then turned around and walked away from the two. When we got back to the vehicles Mom and Becky were already munching down on the food. "Where's Dalton?"
"He's found something cool and wanted to check it out. And he said to leave him some food."
Lily took a glance at the food and nodded slowly, "That can be arranged. Maybe..."
Dalton returned ten minutes later and grabbed a sandwich that was already made. He got done with that and started cleaning up the food, throwing trash away, and putting everything back into the car.
I shared a worried look with my mom, Dalton never cleans up everything by himself.
He hopped in the driver's seat and waited for mom to get in. When she did he started the car and told Becky that it was her turn to drive my truck and that Diablo was riding with us this time.
Once we were in the truck Dalton took off, Becky backed up and followed him back onto the interstate.
