All banged up
Soft humming, that's what I awoke to. It gradually grew louder until I could distinguish voices, one of them being my mother's. I know it isn't right but I laid there unmoving, listening to her conversation. "....you have no right to come back into her life."
A soft, gruff voice spoke. "Of course I do, honey."
"DON'T touch me. If you want to make things up to her I suggest you get moving, her birthday is in a few days."
Their voices faded out and then a click could be heard, signifying a door being closed. Opening my eyes I look around at the blank room. White....... White..... And more white.......... "Shit....."
This time I saw the door open and four people walked in. Dalton, Mom, a nurse and the marshmallow guy. Smiling groggily I watch the man, "Hi Mr. Marshmallow."
They all gave me a confused look and the nurse checked the monitors. The nurse left and an officer replaced her. "Hello Miss Moon. I'm Officer Peterson, I'd like to ask you a few questions. Along with some for the gathered people." I kept smiling as he asked his first question. "Who was driving your vehicle."
I thought about, "Becky...." He wrote it down and moved to the next few. Did you see the other driver, what was the color of your stoplight, was Becky reaching for anything, where were your mother and brother at the time, and the last one. "Who got you out of the vehicle."
I turned towards Marshmallow and smiled. "Mr. Marshmallow did." The officer looked confused until he saw who I was looking at, "Chief. You pulled her out?"
"Yes."
"Alright then. I'd like to ask you three questions independently." He stood up and walked out, motioning my mother to go with him. Once they were out of the room I decided to watch Marshmallow.
"Is Becky alright?..." They both nodded and Dalton spoke up, "She has a minor concussion and a sprained wrist. You two were very lucky that that's all you got."
"Where's Diablo, Dalton?"
He smiled and walked out of the room, coming back a few minutes later with a golden fur ball on a leash. Marshmallow looked questionably at the dog but didn't say anything. "Diablo. Who's my beautiful girl." She jumped carefully onto the bed and started licking my face.
-You're alright! Oh thank Lupus, I thought you'd be beyond repair.
I laughed, earning confused looks from Dalton and Marshmallow. After a few hours of laying there, signing papers and what not. I was able to leave.
What am I forgetting.... BECKY! "Mom, What about Becky?"
"She's being released also, Chief Jones is with her in the lobby."
"Is that Mr.Marshmallow?...."
She laughed and Dalton even chuckled. "Yes that's him."
I couldn't shake the feeling that I saw my dad there, but then again I had thought the mailman was my dad at one point.
We made it to the lobby and Becky and Chief Jones were in fact waiting for us. Becky stood up and walked over to me. "Lacey... I'm soo sorry. I didn't see him coming and we had the right away. I should've went faster or something. I-I..."
I hugged her as she stumbled over her words. "It's not your fault Beck. We had a green light, they had red. Why they didn't stop is a mystery to me. But it wasn't your fault, okay?" Hugging right now wasn't the best idea as we both winced.
Diablo rubbed against our legs, looked up at us, and wagged her tail. Mom placed a hand on each of our shoulders. "Come on girls, We can still have the week at the cabin."
So we walked out of the hospital and towards Mom's car. This isn't going to work with one car.... "Mom?"
She looked through her purse for her keys. "Hmm?"
"What about my truck? How bad was it damaged?"
Dalton pulled her keys out of his pockets and showed to her, a stupid grin on his face. Lily looked between Becky and I. "Well..."
Dalton interupted her before she could say anything else. "The driver side was slammed against the concrete wall on the bridge. The fire department had to take the door off on that side. There's a nice dent on the passenger side where the Semi hit it. And.... I'm pretty sure something in the engine went out."
Becky mumbled another sorry under breathe. Seeing that she was upset with hearing all of the damage, I ruffled up her hair. She smiled and swatted my hand away.
The Chief pulled up his truck next to us and leaned out the window. "Do you guys need help going somewhere? My truck is plenty big enough."
I looked over his truck, then walked around it. Stopping in the front where Dalton was already checking the engine out. "Dang... Mom, if you agree. I'm riding with the Chief. This is one nice truck."
Mom hesitated then nodded, "Alright grab some of your things."
Becky and I shared a look and rushed over to the trunk of Mom's car. Most of our luggage was there and most of the suitcases were banged up. We grabbed two each, Becky made two trips so she wouldn't hurt herwrist any further.
Dalton opened the back doors of the large truck. Becky climbed in and called for Diablo, who leaped in and climbed into the front. I started putting a suitcase in the back but Dalton took it from me and told me to get in the front.
When he got them in he closed the door and told the Chief to follow them. Once we were ten minutes on the road, ichecked in Becky who being unusually quiet.
Turns out she was asleep already. Not such a bad idea... So with Diablo sitting on my lap, it was decided in my mind that I'd take a nap.
I soon fell asleep listening to Jason Aldean singing.
