Chapter 21: The two of us

Song: The two of us- Kim Jong Kook

-Kang Gary-
Ji Hyo just got discharged from the hospital and was acting weird because of the pain medication the doctors had given her.

"Gary Oppa, when can I get a drivers license?" Ji Hyo asked as I put her in the passenger seat of my car. "All of my other friends have theirs. Can I drive your car?"

I sat in the drivers seat and closed the door. "Not in this state."

"Why?" Ji Hyo pouted. "I'm perfectly capable of driving a car right now."

"No, you're not." I put my key into the ignition and started driving.

"Fine." Ji Hyo crossed her arms and looked outside the window. "I never wanted to drive your car anyway."

"Whenever your feeling better I'll let you drive." I promised. "But right now you're sick and you need to rest."

"But I already took a nap!" Ji Hyo whined. "I feel perfectly fine!"

I sighed. "Okay, but later."

We got to Ji Hyo's house and I held her hand as we walked to her door.

"Is this your house Gary?" Ji Hyo asked in awe. "It's so pretty."

I rang the doorbell and smiled. "No this is your house."

The door opened and Ji Hyo's mom was there.

"Omo, what's wrong with my daughter?" Ji Hyo's mom took Ji Hyo's hand and made her sit down on her couch.

"Pain Medication." I answered.

We both looked at Ji Hyo who was slowly starting to fall asleep.

"Honey, do you want me to take you to your bed?" Ji Hyo's mom asked.

"No, I'm not tired. I'm just going to rest my eyes." Ji Hyo closed her eyes and after a few moments she fell asleep.

"Thank you for taking care of her while I couldn't." Ji Hyo's mom smiled. "I'm sorry I doubted you at first Gary."

"It's okay. Do you want me to stay here a little longer?" I asked.

"No, that's fine. Kim Jong Kook is coming over later to take care of her. You should take a break." Ji Hyo's mom patted my shoulder and went into the kitchen.

I glanced at Ji Hyo then followed her mom. "Jong Kook is coming?"

"Yes. Why?" Ji Hyo's mom asked.

"N-nothing. I think I should stay because well.. I forgot to give something to Jong kook. And this will probably be the only time I can because he really wants it." I smiled awkwardly.

Ji Hyo's mom looked at me suspiciously than nodded. "Okay, okay. You can stay until Jong Kook comes."

"Thank you." I walked towards Ji Hyo again and sat down beside her with a sigh.

**
The doorbell rang. I stood up and opened it.

"Oh Jong Kook. It's okay you can leave since I'm already here and taking care of her. You know, so..." I gestured Jong Kook to go back to his car.

Jong Kook rolled his eyes and pushed past me. "Hello, I have arrived."

I glared at him and closed the door. Ji Hyo's mom walked out of the garden and smiled when she saw Jong Kook.

"Ah, it's a good thing you came." She said. "At the right time too."

"How is Ji Hyo?" Jong Kook asked.

"Fine fine." Ji Hyo's mom took Jong Kook's hand. "You look really strong. I could use someone like you to pull out the weeds for me in my garden."

Jong Kook glanced back at me and I tried to keep a serious face on. He then looked at Ji Hyo's mom. "Okay, I'll help."

Ji Hyo's mom clapped and took Jong Kook outside. "Gary, when Ji Hyo wakes up give her some cold water please? Thank you!"

The sliding door in the back closed shut and I smiled as I sat down beside Ji Hyo. I gave her a kiss on her cheek.

"Ji Hyo ah..." I whispered.

Ji Hyo's eyes fluttered open and she looked around. "What happened?"

"You just took a nap." I smiled. "How are you feeling?"

Ji Hyo tried to sit up but couldn't. "Ow. Everywhere hurts... Where's my mom?"

"In the backyard." I answered. "Jong Kook is helping her. Do you want some water?"

Ji Hyo shook her head. "No."

I stood up and went into the kitchen. "Too bad. I'm going to get you some anyway." I got some cold water than gave some to Ji Hyo.

Ji Hyo drank some. "Thank you. Can we go outside?"

I nodded and helped her stand up. "Let's go." I took her hand and walked outside to the backyard with her. I saw Jong Kook trying to pull out a weed from the ground. When he saw Ji Hyo he waved.

Ji Hyo smiled and waved back. Her mom walked towards us and hugged Ji Hyo. "Oh my daughter, I'm sorry. Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine. I just feel a little... Lightheaded." Ji Hyo said.

I pulled out a chair for Ji Hyo and made her sit down. "Here. If you want anything just tell me."

Jong Kook successfully pulled the weed out and made his way towards us. "Hello Ji Hyo."

Ji Hyo smiled. "Hi Kookie."

"Aish. If you weren't in this state I wouldn't have let that go easily." Jong Kook said.

"Sorry." Ji Hyo laughed.

I looked at both of them than coughed. "I should get going now. It's getting late."

Jong Kook raised an eyebrow. "The sun is still up."

"It's.. I have to go." I waved to Ji Hyo and her mom than slowly left the house

-Song Ji Hyo-

I watched Gary leave with a frown. Why was he acting like that?

"Ji Hyo, do you want anything?" Jong Kook asked.

I shook my head. "No, I'm fine."

He looked at me and nodded. "Okay.."

"JONG KOOK, COME HERE!" My mom shouted from across the garden.

Jong Kook smiled. "I should probably go help her."

"That would be the best idea." I laughed. "Thanks for stopping by."

"Anything that will make you feel better." Jong Kook smiled and ran towards my mom.

I watched him and thought about what he said. Did Jong Kook coming here really make me feel better?

-Later-
-Yoon Eun Hye-

I stood in front of Running Man High where Jong Kook and I first met in our first year. I sighed and sat down on a bench thinking about our first meeting.

Flashback
"Look at her, what is she wearing?" One of the girls whispered to her friends.

I ignored them and went into the courtyard. One of my close friends Jo Soo-Hyang (Kang So Young from School 2015: who are you) was sitting with five girls on the ground. They were eating their lunch. I walked towards them and smiled with a wave, "Hey."

They all looked up and giggled. I smiled a little, but something felt wrong.

"Can I sit down?" I sat down beside Soo-Hyang, but she moved away from me which made the other girls laugh.

I looked at Soo-Hyang. "What?"

She smiled and looked at her other friends who nodded. "So how's your mom doing? Did she come back to your dad yet or are your parents still divorced?"

I stayed quiet and looked at Soo-Hyang in disbelief. "What?"

"What?" Soo-Hyang mocked. "Is that the only word you know? What?"

Her friends laughed and they all stood up including Soo- Hyang. Soo-Hyang lifted me up from the ground than pushed me.

"Your parents probably left because of you." Soo-Hyang smiled. "You were a mistake to the family and they both felt bad. None of them wanted to take care of you. Isn't that right?"

"Yah!" I said getting angrily.

Soo-Hyang laughed. "What?" She teased. "What are you going to do?"

I was about to say something one someone poured baking powder all over me. I gasped and turned around to see one of my other friends laughing.

"Yah, unwanted." Soo-Hyang called.

I turned around to look at her and immediately had eggs thrown at me. Everyone who was around us laughed.

"You're basically an outcast." Soo-Hyang kicked my leg. "Why don't you just leave, huh?" She took out an egg from her purse and smashed it on my head causing more laughter. I sat down on my knees and started crying.

"Yah, get up!" Soo-Hyang shouted. "stop '
acting like a baby. Do you want some more?"

I cried. I knew I was unwanted and an outcast. And Soo-Hyang was probably right about my parents..

Just then somebody lifted me up from the ground. I slowly looked up and saw a muscular boy with light brown hair looking at me with sad eyes. He wiped away my tears and turned to face Soo-Hyang.

"Get lost." He said angrily. "Now before it's too late."

Soo-Hyang looked nervous and ran back inside with all of her friends. Jong Kook looked at me with a reassuring smile. "Are you okay?"

"No." I admitted quietly.

"Don't cry." Jong Kook whispered. "Everything's going to be okay. I promise."

I looked at him and he nodded.

"The two of us will get through this together. Okay? I'll be there for you." Jong Kook promised.

"Why... Are you helping me?" I asked.

"Just because." Jong Kook smiled and took my hand. "Come on, let's go get you cleaned up."

I smiled and went inside the school with him.
