Theme Song for this chapter:
Good Day- IU
-Song Ji Hyo-
"JI HYO!" Joongki yelled for the third time.
I groaned in frustration. "Hold on! I'm almost done!!"
Joongki knocked on my closed room door. "You said you were almost done five minutes ago!"
"I'm--"
Now it was my mom's angry voice that came from the other side of the door. "Ji Hyo if you don't hurry you'll be grounded. Joongki's been wating for over twenty minutes~ ou're going to a choosing ceremony, not a wedding!"
I finished applying mascara and quickly grabbed my purse. Then I opened the door where I saw an angry mom and an annoyed Joongki. "You don't understand. This is a huge thing for both of us. I have to look good."
"Why? Are you going to meet your future husband there?" My mom asked sarcastically.
I shrugged. "Possibly."
Joongki grabbed my hand and pulled me downstairs. "We're going to be late! Bye Ms. Song!"
"Good luck!" My mom said and followed us outside. "Ji Hyo, when you get back I'll show you the peach tree okay?!"
I smiled. "Okay!"
My mom had the largest garden in our backyard. She planted everything from fruits to vegetables, and sold them to the people in our neighborhood. We live on a ranch house so we also have a ton of land, which we don't really use but it's still beautiful. We've been living in our house ever since I was born, which was a pretty long time ago.
"You've messed up my hair!" I complained to Joongki. "Are we really going to run all the way there?"
Joongki nodded. "We have no other choice."
"Why don't we just use my mom's car?" I asked, because I seriously didn't want to run.
Joongki looked at me like I was an idiot. "We don't even have our licenses yet. You want to get arrested?"
"Oh...I forgot. Then we'll run. Bye mom!" I quickly waved to my mom before running away with Joongki.
-Kim Jong Kook-
"Honey, what color do you like best? White and back? Or how about red and white?" My mom took out two suits and examined them closely.
I sighed and stared at myself in the mirror. "Why are we already choosing my wedding suit? Eun Hye's family hasn't even--."
She put the red and white suit back. "I know, but there's no way there going to say no to my son. Plus, you and Eun Hye already know each other, right?"
"We don't talk much." I looked away from my mom. "And I'm not even sure if I want to marry her."
She slapped me in the shoulder. "Quiet, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for you Jong Kook. Yoon Eun Hye's family owns the EIU Computer network and the Seoul museum and library. Once your father dies, you'll be in control of Running Man High. You and Eun Hye will be legends in South Korea." Her words were harsh, but I knew she meant well.
"You tak about father like it's not even a big deal at all. He's suffering lung cancer and you only care about me and Eun Hye getting wed." I stared at her. "Are you that excited for him to pass away?"
She took a deep breath and handed me the black and white suit, tears threatening to spill over her lashes. "Hear, wear this one. We have to be at Running Man High when your father chooses new students. Hurry." The worst part was that I didn't feel even a little bit sorry..
I took the suit from her and went into the fitting room. Every year, my father chooses names from students that applied to the high school. The name of the student he chooses gets to attend Running Man High without payment of anything. He calls it Jai Ho. Although that sounds great and all, it sort of means that the student has no talent and isn't worthy of attending the high school. Chosen students last only about a month,
After trying on the suit, I exited the fitting room and handed it to my mom. "It's good, we have to hurry come on."
When we arrived there was already a crowd waiting in front of the school. My father stood in front of the doors with a large table in front of him. On that table was a box filled with applicants. Only five people would be chosen. I pushed through the crowd and hurried towards my father. After greeting him,I stood beside him and my mom and stared at the large crowd. It looked like the whole population of South Korea came today. Some students that were already enrolled into the school waited near the doors. I noticed some of my friends and walked towards them.
"Kim Jong Kook!" HaHa gave me a high five. "We were wondering when you were going to come."
"Where were you?" Eun Hye questioned.
"Um..." I didn't want to tell her my mother was already planning our wedding. "I was just getting ready."
"I wonder who's going to get picked." HaHa scanned the crowd. "There's a lot of people today. I hope we don't get stupid ones."
Yoo Jae Suk scoffed. "Speak for yourself."
HaHa glared at him and they both yelled, "YAH!"
Kwang Soo sighed. "They have no idea what awaits them here."
"Kim Jong Kook, come over here. We're starting!" My mom called. I nodded and walked towards her.
"Everyone!" As soon as my father spoke into the microphone, the crowd fell silent. "We're so delighted to everyone that came for the choosing ceremony. Today, five lucky students will be enrolled into Running Man High charge-free. Every thing will be provided to you from books to school uniforms. I wish you all the best of luck. Jai Ho begins now." He looked at me and smiled. "Would you like to do the honors?"
I nodded and slowly walked towards the box. This is the first time in years he asked me to choose names. As I put my hand in, I felt thousands of eyes on me which made me nervous. I reached for the bottom of the box, picked out a card and handed it to my dad.
He opened it and said, "The first lucky student is... Kang Gary!"
A very calm looking boy happily ran towards us and bowed. "Thank you. My dream has finally come true. Thank you!"
My dad smiled. "Please stand to the side. Jong Kook, choose another."
I randomly chose one and handed it to him.
"Lizzy."
A cheerful looking Busan girl walked towards us. She also bowed and stood beside Gary.
"Another."
I took out a card and handed it to him.
"Nichkhun."
A boy walked up to the stage. "Thank you."
Another person was picked.
"Song Joongki."
"Here!" A handsome boy ran towards us followed by a beautiful gir. Joongki climbed up the stage but the girl stayed off even though she was about to climb on after him. I stared at her and she caught me looking so I quickly looked away.
"Last person is..."
I handed my dad the last card. Everyone in the crowd had eager looks on their faces. My dad opened it up and read, SONG-JI-HYO."
The girl I saw earlier looked at Joongki in surprise and they each gave each other a thumbs up.
-Song Ji Hyo-
I can't believe it! The principal had already given us our books and lockers. Joongki's locker was two away from mine.
"This is amazing!" Joongki said while he put his textbooks away. "We're going to be going to high school together."
"And not just any old school..." I smiled and we both looked at each other and said, "Running Man High!"
He closed his locker. "I'm going to pick yp our uniforms. Want me to get yours?"
"Yes, please!"
Joongki nodded. "Okay, I'll drop them off at your house."
He waved and left. I hummed and finished putting my books away when someone called my name.
"Yah, you're Song Ji Hyo aren't you?" An old boy with glasses ran towards me.
I looked around confused then nodded. "Yes..."
"Look, you may think getting accepted into this school is great and all. Trust me, that's what I thought too when i first came here. But..." The boy took a breath and I noticed that his nameplate read 'Ji Suk Jin'. "The students here are crazy. If you don't know, being picked in Jai Ho doesn't mean you're lucky. In fact, the people that weren't picked were extremely lucky." He took another breath and I raised an eyebrow. "Anyway.. being chosen actually means that you have no talent at all. And that's all people here care about. If you're a comedian, a singer, dancer or a freaking rich person, they don't care unless you were brought into this school because your parents brought you in. If you're not rich, you'll be tormented until the very last day. You'll be called untalented, unworthy and they'll ruin your lives."
I stared at Suk Jin to confused and shocked to even say anything to that. After I few seconds I said, "Are you being serious?"
Suk Jin nodded. "Of course. In fact they didn't stop bullying me until last year. And Im a senior... so I just wanted to tell you that. So you're ready. Running Man High. It's not a school, it's a death wish...."
And just like that, he walked away.
I closed my locker and watched him leave in disbelief. Then I looked around the empty hallways and scoffed, "He can't be serious..."
I guess I'm going to have to face whatever happens tomorrow. But If Suk Jin thinks that I'm going to let them torment me until my senior year... then he's completely out of his mind.
"Mom, I'm home!" I closed the door behind me and walked into the kitchen where I found my mom making dinner. When she saw me, she dropped everything she was doing and fast walked towards me.
"Ji Hyo, how'd it go? Was your name called? I'm sorry I couldn't go I was really busy...whats wrong? Did you get accepted into the high school?" She asked.
My mom was sort of a chatterbox just like me.
"Mom..." I tried to sound like something terrible happened.
My mom pouted as if she already understood. "Awh, it's okay Ji Hyo!" She tried to sound upbeat, but I could hear the disappointment in her voice."Its okay, I'll make you some dumplings okay?" My mom sighed and returned to her cooking.
"Mom!" I said more cheerfully this time with a bright smile on my face. She turned around looking confused.
"What?" She asked.
I showed her my acceptance letter. "Look! Guess who's going to be attending Running Man High!?!"
"Really?" She asked and took the letter from me. "No way! For real?"
"For real" I hugged her. "I'm going to start going tomorrow and they've already provided me with my school uniform, books... Everything! All for free!"
"Oh that's fantastic! AH, I CANT BELIEVE IT! MY VERY OWN DAUGHTER IS GOING TO BE ATTENDING RUNNING MAN...OH! I HAVE TO CONTACT EVERYONE AND TELL THEM!"she quickly took out her phone out of her pocket.
"Joongkis coming later to drop off my uniform." I said, sitting down on the couch in the living room.
"Did he get chosen as well?" My mother asked.
I nodded with a smile.
"That's even better!" My mom cheered. "I'm going to make the best dinner ever for both of you. This is such grand news that it deserves more than dumplings."
I smiled and tried hard not to think about what that Ji Suk Jin boy told me. the students there can't be that harsh. I sighed and thought of the positive aspects for me attending Running Man High. I'm not going to let these people push me around, no matter what.
