Prologue

**Sometime in the future, 2037**

The cemetery lay in stillness beneath a silver moon, the night air heavy with the scent of blooming roses. Rose Winters stood alone, her gaze fixed on a grave adorned with a plaque that read, "In Loving Memory of Ethan Winters, Beloved Father and Hero." She placed a bouquet of white roses at the headstone, her tears falling like raindrops on the petals. Her father had been gone for years, but the pain was as fresh as ever.

"Hey." A gentle voice shattered the quietude.

Y/N approached Rose, his footsteps barely a whisper on the gravel path. He knew the significance of this moment and had been her unwavering source of support since they first met as children.

"Sorry...I didn't realize that you were still here."

Y/N chuckled softly, "You're my best friend, Rose. You know I would never leave you like that."

Rose smiled briefly before developing into a sniff, "Yeah I'm alright. It's just....you know..."

"Like what?" Y/N asked. "Are you okay?"

"It's just hard, you know?"

The young teen turned over to look at the grave and saw that the flowers were placed there. He stood by to give her some time, feeling like it wasn't his place to really intrude. But there was now a sense of regret almost like his friend was going through a whirling road of pain than she already experienced.

"I...I can't imagine..." Y/N stopped himself. Of course, he does, maybe not on the same level as Rose but even he had his nights too. And they weren't pleasant.

"You're dad was a hero. He spent his entire time to save you, him, and Dad."

Rose nodded, wiping another tear. "I know....but I just wished he was here, for me rather than....all of this."

"I feel you," Y/N approached her, taking a glance at the grave before back at her, "I wish none of this happened....everyone at school goes around saying shit sucks but at least they don't have to get involved with the military and supernatural freaks."

"Ditto." She blatantly said.

Y/N quickly turned, realizing what he just said. "Not that you're a freak."

"I am."

"Rose-"

"Look at me, Y/N. I'm hardly even human. Anyone close to me is a risk of getting killed. I'm a freak....."

Y/N shook his head, "No, Rose, you're not-"

"I am!"

"If this is about Lucy and her friends then they can go shove it!" Y/N stated, "After everything they did to you, what Mickey did to you a week ago, you're more human than they can ever be."

Rose's face darkened, and she sighed. The bullying had been a constant presence in her life, even as she entered her teenage years. Y/N had always been there to defend her, but it still hurt.

"I don't....mean them," Rose stated wearily. "At least....not just them."

"Then what?!" Y/N asked, desperate to see what's really going on.

Rose glanced away, her voice barely above a whisper, "It's... everything. And by how I see myself. You don't get it, Y/N. I look in the mirror, and all I see is a freak. It's not just the bullies, it's... it's me."

Y/N frowned, struggling to find the right words. He had seen Rose at her lowest and had defended her countless times, but he realized he might not fully comprehend the depth of her pain.

"I'm the reason that my mom and I are being watched over like some pet or weapon, I'm the reason that mom slowly became distant, I'm the reason that....I'm an outcast in the first place. I'm the reason, my dad is dead. Don't you get it?! I'm a monster!"

The entire area was silent. Dead silent. Thankfully it was only just the two of them alone as the wind continued to blow. Y/N fell silent, almost hurt by the declaration. He was upset but he couldn't be angry or hate her for this. Never.

But she was wrong.

"....You're not the only monster, Rose."

Rose bit her lip, realizing who she was talking to. She always thought about her and that she was the only person going through this circumstance when really she wasn't the only one.

"Y/N...I'm...I'm sorry it's just-"

"It's okay," Y/N's voice almost cracked but he shook his head, taking a deep breath as he looked out at the sky. "I know you have your own worries. I don't need you to worry about mine."

Rose remained silent. "I'm sorry."

"Again, it's fine, Rose," Y/N sighs. "After all, if I wasn't a monster. I wouldn't be close to you and that would've been lonely."

Rose's eyebrows furrowed as he continued,

"I mean...who else could I really talk to? I know my dad but he's busy and my brother doesn't have the same burden that I have."

It might also be because they both don't have the same complete parents.

"But yours is different."

"It's different but also.....scary....and haunting, especially when we know who it's from."

Someone morally wrong and worse than Miranda or Evaline....

Y/N shook his head, the mere thought of him after everything he did to his dad, to Chris, and above all what he did to his mom only angered him to his core. Only for a hand to be placed gently on his shoulder.

"It doesn't...matter now right?" Rose told him, "They're both gone....."

Y/N let out a soft chuckle, "Should take your own advice on that."

Rose caught herself in thought before Y/N wrapped her tight into a hug, "You're strong Rose. You've come a long way, and you're stronger than you think."

Rose fell silent before smiling weakly, "Thanks, Y/N. I'm lucky to have you as a friend."

Y/N pulled himself away to look at her face-to-face and could almost be lost in how beautiful she looked. Lucy and her friends had nothing compared to her and honestly, he was glad she was far from them.

"Best friend."

Rose softly giggled and Y/N grinned as though he hadn't seen that in a while, "Bestie."

"Bestie."

Both let out a light laugh before they took one look at the gravestone as they began to walk slowly through the cemetery, the sun casting long shadows on the gravestones. The world seemed to fade away as they fell into a comfortable silence, their steps echoing in the lonely cemetery.

"I'm jealous," Rose mumbled.

"Jealous?" Y/N stopped. "Of whom?"

"You....I wish I could be as confident about this as you."

Y/N shook his head, "Even I have my breakdowns."

"But you know how to control it.....I've always felt so out of place..."

"You're strong, Rose. More than what you give credit for. It's tough but I know you can get through this. And I'll always be here."

"Thanks."

As they continued their walk, for a while the weight on Rose's shoulders seemed to lessen. That is until-

"Am I interrupting something?"

The two turned to look at someone who had similar features as Y/N but was older and looked entirely different.

"Jack."

"What are you guys doing? Much less in here," the man placed his hands on his hips, giving them a slight scowl. "I was honking and telling ya'll to get in before you-know-who notice you're not at home."

"Sorry, Jack, it's just she insisted." Y/N shrugged.

"Right, and get her and yourselves in trouble. You lucky neither dad or Chris noticed nor your mom."

"I know, I know, I'm sorry-"

"You don't have to," Rose sighed almost annoyed by this notion, it's one thing with how she has to deal with school failing to have a normal life but it was things like these that always reminded her that her life was just too different from ordinary — much less to the point where she wasn't allowed to even see her dad's grave, especially not alone.

Jack sighed, "Look, we have a situation."

"As if I didn't realize that," Rose silently snarled. "I already told Chris-"

"It's not about Chris. It's about you."

"What do you mean?" Rose stumbled.

Jack exhaled a deep breath before explaining, "Let's just say an old friend of our dad's....and someone who knew your dad as well. There's something coming Rose, and I'm sorry to say this,"

Rose closed her eyes as he muttered,

"You're a part of this."

Rose's face faltered almost wanting to throw something as she waved her hands, "Glad to know."

Jack placed his hand on her shoulder, giving her a sympathetic look, "I'm sorry kid. I..."

"I know, Jack. It's alright," Rose unenthusiastically sighed, "This is practically every day so it's not like it's gonna get any better."

Jack nods, "Right. Right."

"Come on, let's see whoever this guy is...."

Rose stalked around the back of the vehicle, opening the left side door and sliding into it. She slammed the door shut as Y/N went into the other side of the door.

"Hey...are you sure you okay?"

"I'm alright, Y/N," She told him bluntly. But he can tell that was a lie. The tone in her voice and how she reacted when something out of order called to her once again, made it clear.

Jack got inside the front door and hands on the wheel, "So you two hanging in there?"

"Fine as usual," Rose responded as Jack started driving to their destination.

"So! I was thinking of getting some food for my favorite youngsters. Ice Cream on me? Taking a small break since I can tell school wasn't good."

"Eh, it was...fine." Not much as reminded that you're mom and dad are secret agents — much less a hybrid.

"Look I get it. I had to go through something similar at my school. But you know what," He turned to the two. "You guys got something I don't get."

"What's that?" Y/N asked.

"You guys got each other. Never forget that."

Rose tilted her head towards him, her facial expression formed into a disappointing frown, "That's not true....."

Y/N and Jack both glanced at her before she continued,

"We got you."

Jack's face forged into a smile. They were the youngest generation but also a result of the hell that their parents and godparents went through before them.

**July 7th, 1998 - Present Day**

"Dayln!"

A young man, no older than 19 years old at least was sitting down at his desk, filling out a few application plans for his choices for college. He wanted to take ULA, hoping that he along with his friend would get in with no problems  - as well as see if they could assure them to become roommates.

He had some headphones on, listening to "Mr. Blue Sky" while mumbling out the lyrics as he was just about almost finished when his pencil broke.

"Shit." He muttered. He let out a small groan as he got into his drawer and grabbed another one, then continued to write.

He didn't have the best grades in school, not that he wasn't dumb but he had a very small problem when it came to something such as procrastination. Luckily his teachers were so nice to give him extra days to turn in his work and avoid detention, with help from his bestie of course.

He let out an exhausting sigh before he leaned back on his wheelchair, spinning himself around as he enjoyed the thrill of the music. His room wasn't really a mess but it was enough to the point that he would never hear the end of it from his mom.

"Dayln! I can hear you!"

Dayln leaned his head further on the chair before taking out his headphones and shouting,

"Yeah!"

"Food here! Get your ass down here, now!"

"Coming!"

He quickly got up and made his way out of the room.
