CHAOS

Phoebe's POV

"What has happened, Miss?"

"This girl was attempting to inject Daniel with Ceftriaxone and Daniel's allergic to it," I thrust the file into the hands of the superintendent. "The doctor had advised Cefoxitin. And isn't Ceftriaxone given to prepare the body for surgery and not for post-surgery prophylaxis? I think the doctor advised Mefoxin, precisely."

I was amazed at the confidence with which I spoke. Well, there was no harm in giving off the information I had gleaned from the internet.

Daniel's jaws had dropped open and I saw him trying to cram all the new information in his brain, no wonder he had wanted to study medicine.

The superintendent nodded his head, trying to deal with the situation.
"You're right. So what do we do with her now?" he pointed at the nurse who was still on the floor, sobbing.

"If I may interfere, though it's none of my concern, suspend her for some time, but don't remove her from the job. What she did was out of fear and I actually know how bad Paul can be. He can force anyone to do anything."

Déjà vu hit me as the time when I had been kidnapped came back. I shuddered.
"He has an enmity with me and that's what he's taking out on Daniel," I added. "He had kidnapped me once. They work for Derek Sebastian!"

"The bastard," the superintendent cursed under his breath. "I know him quite well and he seems to think that money can buy everything in the world. This tape is very useful. I think we could get them arrested for it."

No use, he'll come out again, I thought, but kept quiet nevertheless.

"Oh, and I would like to actually like you people to refer him to some other hospital in Pittsburg. I don't think we should keep him here after the attempt on his life."
I looked at Mrs Waters and she supported my words. Even Daniel had agreed to get transferred and I knew he was breaking inside, though he seemed to put up a tough exterior. I wanted all questionings to come to an end so that I could talk to him alone.

The sound of police sirens made me realise that we were not going to get peace that night. I repeated the whole story over again to the police. They confirmed my worst fears. Derek Sebastian had got all his men out on bail as they awaited the hearings of the court.

The police promised to slap non-bailable charges on the gang and draw them back in. The director-general also came down to meet us and I earned a lot of praise. But all the time my mind was occupied with thoughts of Daniel's safety.

It was evening when they left and the entire hospital had gone back to its normal calmness when a man entered the cabin, dithering for a moment at the threshold. He was the doctor and I knew that by one glance.

"Alfred Strong," he extended his hands to shake mine. "Chief of the department of neurology. I'm the one that's operated on him."

"What do you want?" I said and it came out as rather rude. Well I couldn't blame myself after the hectic day.

"Miss Wellesley, I know you want to drag him out of this hospital, but could I suggest something?"

I kept quiet.

"I take that as a permission then," he sighed, "I know your concerns and after what happened today, I would have done the same in your situation. But he is post-op day one. Even twenty-four hours have not passed. Once you take him out of the hospital, I can't keep a watch on him, as his surgeon, I'm the only one that's familiar with the case."

"Go on," I retorted once he had stopped.

"Could I administer the medications myself? Then there would be no chance of any errors."

"How much money did Sebastian feed you?" I snapped.

"I don't know how I can make you believe, but I'm in no way involved with Sebastian, whoever he is."

I gave him one of my frosty nosed looks, "Make me believe. Win my trust and I'll let you stay here. This behaviour only shows how much the hospital actually cares for its image rather than the patients. I am eternally grateful to you for saving Daniel. That's only half the trust earned though. Money can turn anyone into a cold-hearted murderer."

'Well," he game a small smile, "I can only provide you with a character certificate from some doctors I know. If that helps."

"You know Doctor Philips?'

"Yes," his eyes gleamed, "Philips is an old friend."

I called him directly telling him everything. If there was one doctor in the world whom I could trust blindly, it was him. He assured me that Doctor Strong had always been a good man.

With a lot of grudging, I finally agreed to keep Daniel for another forty-eight hours after which we could take him home.
But that didn't mean, I left him alone.

Much to my mother's annoyance, Daniel's' amusement and the doctor's disdain, I stuck with him throughout the night, napping in between and checking each medication and its effect from the internet.
At midnight, however, my mother strictly asserted that I need to get my feeding which had totally been forgotten in the melee. I agreed after making sure he didn't need any medications for the next six hours at least.

I made Daniel promise that he would take care of checking out any new medications prescribed.

"Doctor, I want an intradermal test done for any new antibiotic you think to start. Can't risk a supposed medication error," I could barely warn before my mother hauled me out of the room.

The look on the face of the surgeon was enough to lighten my mood as my mother literally dragged me to our car.
