Chapter 12

The sound of a blaring alarm was being blasted from the speakers, waking me up in an instant. My hair was ruffled. My clothes were all wrinkled as I sat up from the bed. My head almost banging the upper bunk as I did so.

I looked around the room. It wasn't my room; rather, it was one of the rooms that doctors sleep in when it is not their shift. The red light seeping into the room made me wide awake. It was code red, meaning I need to go to the emergency room as fast as possible.

I quickly stood up and grabbed my coat before swiftly wrapping it around myself. I opened the door and ran through the red hallway. The layout was quite similar to the hospital that I work in so it wasn't that much of a problem to make my way to the emergency room.

I saw an abandoned flower origami on the floor. I picked it up, studying its features as if it was a work of art. It was stepped on, the reason why it is kind of deformed. I looked at the emergency room door which was opened.

"Time of death, 10:13 pm." The doctor said which caught my attention at an instant. I saw a crying woman who was holding her son in her hands.

I looked around the room. The monitor showed a straight line, indicating that there were no more heartbeats that could be detected. The child was dead.

I felt my heart break at the sight. My legs turning into jelly as I failed to keep myself standing upright and fell to my knees. Tears started to flow down my cheeks as I slammed my hand on the floor.

My breathing started to get heavier the more I cry. Sharp, jagged, short breaths were all I could inhale as I wailed in sorrow.

I didn't even know why I was crying. Why are you crying, Y/N?

My vision was getting fuzzier the more I cry. I could hear the sound of a ringing phone in the back of my head but my body won't cooperate and just continued to cry. Slowly, my vision started to turn black.

I woke up, breathing heavily as I wiped my tears that were still streaming down my face. "Why are you crying?" I asked myself. I tried to remember what happened in my dream but was disrupted when my phone started ringing.

I checked the time, "2:02 am, Who's calling me this late?" I thought but proceeded to answer the call anyway.

"Hello? Who is thi-"

"Thank goodness you finally picked up your phone, Y/N." I heard the familiar voice of my best friend back in college, Sunoo.

"Oh Sunoo, how did you get my numbe-"

"No time to talk, Y/N. You NEED to go to Asan Medical Center right now." He exclaimed. I could feel the panic in his voice.

"Why?" I asked. I couldn't understand what he was saying. Why would I need to go to Seoul? It would take me hours to drive from here to there. Plus, I don't even work there so why.

"IT'S YOUR FATHER!" He shouted.

I quickly sat up on my bed and started to feel nervous. What happened to my father? Mom said he was fine when I called her last night. "What about my father?"

"HE'S IN THE ER!!!"

And my heart fell to my stomach. "W-What do you mean?"

"Y/N just hurry up and get here." He said and ended the call.

I quickly got up and changed into a comfortable but presentable pink sweater and black leggings. I proceeded to grab a handbag, stuffing my car keys, wallet, house keys, phone, and other essentials in and ran down the stairs as I fast as I could.

I went into my car and quickly drove out of the neighborhood and drove to the nearest airport. I went to the counter which, thankfully, wasn't too crowded and lined up at the cue. I successfully got a plane ticket to Seoul which was going to depart in 10 minutes.

In those 10 minutes, I looked for nearest airport café and bought myself a caramel macchiato with extra caramel. I managed to finish it after a few minutes and I felt quite energized.

I got into the plane and went to my seat which was right beside the window. I placed my bag on the floor as the plane took off. I started to drift off to sleep, only waking up when they were already announcing that we were already landing.

I got off the airplane and outside the airport in a hurry. I hailed a taxi and got inside.

"Please go to Asan Medical Center as fast as possible. It's an emergency." I said to the driver who only nodded in response.

I called up Dr. Oh to tell him that I would not be able to come to work today due to a family emergency which he approved of.

I proceeded to call Taehyung to tell him that I won't be home in case he would wonder where I am.

"Huh?" I heard his husky voice from the other end. "Y/N-ah? Why are you calling this late at night?"

I heard him let out a little yawn, making me giggle, "I just called you up to tell you that won't be home in case you find me later.

"Huh? Where are you going?" He asked me, his voice sound a little more awake that a while ago.

"I'm in Seoul right now, heading to Asan Medical Center."

"What? Why are you suddenly in Seoul?" He asked me, worry evident in his voice.

"My father. It's complicated I can't explain."

"It's okay. When will you be back?"

"I still don't know."

"Take care, Y/N. Okay?"

"I will, Taetae. Sorry for interrupting your sleep."

"No no it's okay. Bye, princess." I giggled at the nickname, and my heart started to thump faster. It wasn't the right time to feel this but I can't help it. I replied with a "Bye" before ending the call.

I received a message from Sunoo that my father was already in a stable condition but he's still unconscious as of the moment.

I soon arrived at the hospital, and I felt as if I was brought back to reality. I paid the taxi driver before scurrying to the front desk, asking what room my father is in.

As if I was having a sugar rush, I ran faster like never before. Quickly, I opened the door to see my mom who was sitting on the chair, holding hands with my dad, who was still lying on his bed, unconscious.

"Y/N? Why are you here?" My mom ran up to me, hugging me in the process.

I hugged her back, "Why didn't you tell me about dad's condition?"

"Y-You were busy. I didn't want to disturb you from working." My mom said, sincerity in her tone.

I let go of her, walking towards my father. I frowned at the sight of my once cheery and lively father, now all pale and connected to a machine to keep him alive.

"How is he?" I asked my mother.

"He's doing quite well-"

"Mom stop lying to me! How is his condition right now? When will he wake up?" I was furious and felt bad because she didn't inform me about this situation sooner.

"He's in a coma." My mom said and started to break down in tears. My heart broke at that. I placed my hand on top of his hand, squeezing it for a bit.

"Wake up, Dad. Please wake up."

My vision started to blur as tears welled up in my eyes.

I blinked, letting a tear drop on our connected hands.
