TWO: THE GUY I REMEMBER

Song to listen to while reading:

(Ed Sheeran) All of The Stars - Piotr Szumlas - Fingerstyle Guitar Cover

I kept visiting the family restaurant nearby the apartment just to see the guy I remembered.

Sometimes I saw him help carry boxes from the charity for the elderly.

He would often see me and look at me for a second. I knew he wouldn't recognize me. We haven't had the chance to talk, and I don't know his name. Sometimes we would exchange smiles. I could see the dimples on his cheeks as he smiled at me and felt my heart race. I would often see him give his food to the beggars.

"I hope this will be good enough for the whole day."

"Thank you, Leo. It's more than enough."

The other beggar said, "You're so kind. You indeed have a kind heart."

Leo helped the elderly by carrying their things if needed and offered to help them walk across the street.

He would always give a genuine smile to the people he showed kindness to.

Little by little, I was falling in love with him because of his gentle heart.

The clouds rumbled overhead as I walked along the alley, the faintest drops of rain climbed from a gentle pattering to a raucous downpour.

It soaked through my long brunette hair and my clothes in minutes.

"I don't have an umbrella!" I quickly went into the family restaurant.

"When will the rain stop?" I asked myself as I looked out the window. To my surprise, he went into the restaurant and gave me a towel.

"Here, take this. You will catch a cold if you stay drenching in the rain."

If only you knew how my heart flutters just by hearing your captivating voice.

"Thank you. But why are you so kind?" I asked as I dried myself with the towel.

He smiled. "I believe in doing good things every day. We need good memories in our life."

"What's your name?"

"Leo, how about you, what's yours?"

"My name is Belle. Can we get some coffee, as a thank you for your good deed?"

He smiled again, forming the cute dimples on his cheeks. "Sure, Belle... since it's still raining outside, and it's cold, a hot coffee will make my day."

We sat down, gave our order, and waited. We finally had our ordered hot coffee served on the table. I could smell the bitterness of the brewed coffee air flowing around us. Leo and I took a sip of our coffee at the same time. It's delicious, keeping me warm as if it covered me in a blanket which gave me a cozy feeling.

I noticed that Leo was wearing a necklace with a butterfly pendant. "So, you like butterflies?" I asked, pointing at his silver necklace.

His frown deepened. "This was given to me by my grandmother who passed away."

"I'm sorry."

His darkest eyes of green color were teary. "It's okay. As long as I have this necklace, she'll always be here." He pointed at his heart. He smiled, and his sadness seemed to disappear.

"You know, I remember this different and beautiful butterfly I saw. It reminded me of my grandmother. I feel happy seeing that butterfly. Its wings are pure violet and shiny, with traces of white, similar to the violet of your eyes, Belle."

I blushed and hated the warm feeling of my cheeks. I noticed whenever his magnetic eyes looked at me, my heart fluttered.

"I was so sad at that time, and seeing that butterfly made me happy."

His eyes were filled with hope and inspiration. "I know my grandmother wants me to be happy, and I'm trying my hardest to be. There are times when I feel hopeless, but now somehow I feel happy and at peace."

We both noticed the rain had stopped. The sky was losing its dark clouds one by one. It was almost cloudless.

I needed to be in a hurry. "Sorry, Leo, I have some important things to do. I need to go."

Before Leo could speak, I ran away from the restaurant and hid behind a huge tree so the people who walked by couldn't see me.

I transformed into a butterfly once again.

Every time the morning sky was cloudless, and the night sky was starless, I became a butterfly.

I flew back to that restaurant and saw Leo finished with his coffee. I made sure that his eyes spotted me. His shining eyes stared at me in awe with a smile on his face.

Leo, I know you miss your grandmother so much. And I'm happy that whenever you see me, your smile is the sincerest and warmest smile I've ever seen. But I wonder if there'll be a day you'll have the same smile when you see me as Belle. I'll be waiting, Leo.
