::Chapter 33:: Saviour
Kit should have felt as though every drop of energy had been drained from him.
In the past month, he had been through hell and back. Fight after fight, injury after injury and loss after loss. He shouldn't have had anything left.
Yet when he finally took step on the shoreline. It was with a renewed energy.
Everything had changed since he had been here last. Since the last time he had been on the island. He had something new to fight for, as well as the same need to protect his family and friends.
Against all the odds, the likelihood of death and failure. They were finally here, in the last leg of the race. They had a chance to win. To save the world
To finally shake off the last hold of the island. Kit thought, hungry at the very idea of freedom from he beasts who had plagued him for the last five years.
Freedom was dangling in front of them like a steak before a starving dog. Kit all but licked his lips as they prepared for the final battle.
Now it was all or nothing, and the beasts had only place to go.
He watched as a number of the humans made their way to the docks, as silently as possible. Keeping as close to the ground as possible, hiding. As they got into the boats and prepared to follow the monsters to the island.
Coursing through his veins was adrenaline, his heart racing to the point where he was certain that it would explode through his chest. His tail darted from left to right, waiting for them to get into position so they could finally start.
The very second that Kit saw the flag go up, Kit leapt forward. He didn't wait for a verbal order, he couldn't hold back for a second longer.
Soon the thunderous sounds of footsteps were following him. He wasn't sure whether or not he was the first, but it felt as though he was leading the charge.
Going for the beast he saw first, Kit bared his fangs and lunged with everything he had. Finding his purchase on the scaled sides of the creature. He tore into it, snarling and growling and tearing time after time.
When the others caught up, he barely noticed until he was thrown off and found himself surrounded by a group doing the same thing. Kit twitched an ear in acknowledgement of Romany and Vic beside him.
As soon as the beast had put a single foot in the water, the creature retreated. Following the others into the water and towards the island.
Only now did Kit notice the barriers newly put up, to stop them from trying to swim anywhere but the island. He watched them, silent for a moment. His heart still racing but he barely noticed. Then he turned his head back to search for his next enemy.
The familiar screech of Max was audible to him even over the chaos of battle, and Kit lunged left. Searching for the familiar sight of his tawny feathers.
Closer to the ocean he was fighting a beast, for the time being he seemed capable of holding his own. Kit was about to search for a different battle, when out of the corner of his eye line, he saw the creature throw the eagle to he ground.
Looking just in time to see a couple of humans be taken to the ground with a sweep of the beast's tail. Max was now left to fight truly on his own, without the foot soldiers to try and help him.
Infuriated, Kit lunged forward before he realised what he was doing. His paws taking him across the shoreline with a speed he didn't realise he was capable of. Scattering sand behind him as he went, teeth bared back he lunged once again.
Surprised by the sudden arrival of a new enemy, the beast spun around from where he was preparing to land the final blow on the eagle.
Apparently he had brought a few others with him, as bullets showered the beast a split second after Kit had reached it. Again, he began to bite and tear at the creature with a rage which would have scared the most battle hardened animal..
Forcing it further and further back, growling and snarling at the top of his lungs. He didn't realise how far he had followed, until he felt water under foot. Yet the beast wasn't retreating like the ones before it. He seemed intent on fighting it out until the end.
Leaping left, trying to keep his footing as best as possible on the rocky surfaces under foot. Kit tore his fangs into the animal, ears pinned flat to his skull.
Kit gasped hard, when a bullet pierced through his abdomen. He stumbled, his blood soaking his fur he snarled in agony.
In the split second, Kit was certain he had lost the battle. The beast, recognising his moment of weakness leapt forward. Dragging Kit further into the water, almost dragging the wolf beneath e surface.
Dragging himself out of the jaws of death with the little of what remained of his energy. He panted, pain rippling through him and shock beginning to set in from the suddenness of the cold water surrounding him.
Yowling in pain as he kicked out. Searching for footing but finding none, Kit forced himself to keep his head above the water as best as possible. But with the beast coming at him again and again. Now a cat playing with a mouse, Kit was certain that this was going to be his death and he was about to accept his fate.
Again the sounds of bullets tore through the air, and he heard the beast screech. Max dove down, driving his talons into the creature's hide. Distracting it from it's prey in enough time for Kit's saving grace to get to him.
Romany kicked out, she too struggling to find footing but she wrapped an arm around Kit's waist, and dragged him out of the line of fire as best as she could. She choked a little on the water as she struggled with the extra weight.
Dragging him onto the shore, Kit coughed hard. Bringing up as much of the water as he was able to and taking a moment to recover. When he looked up again, it felt as though every set of eyes were on him.
It was over.
Pulling himself back to his feet, trying to regain much of the dignity that he no doubt just lost the majority of.
"You ready?" Peter's voice was amused, but at the same time understanding.
"Of course," he said trying to sound as certain as possible.
Now he had to return to the island. To finish this all for good, and to trap them there for hopefully forever.
It was almost over, but there was still a lot left to do.
