::Chapter 21:: Flames

As he continued to fight, all Kit could see was red.

Blood seeped from wounds all over his body, mostly from burns caused by the awful creature he fought. Occasionally one was caused from a misfired bullet which had found its way into Kit but the pain didn't discriminate.

Everything was agony.

In spite of it, he had to continue a fight he was losing faith in.

Situated on the shoulder of the great beast, he had managed to remain in place for a number of minutes. Digging his claws in as far as they would go, ignoring the burning sensation this causes as best as he could. He continued to bite and tear into anything he could get his fangs on.

His own actions did little to cause harm, but the creature was an idiot. It swung it's hands at the wolf, not caring what injury it caused to itself in doing so.

Which would have been fine with any other monster to battle. Yet as it did, great chunks of scale and rock came tumbling from the great creature's body. Hitting Kit as it fell to the ground, making it all the more difficult to fight and stay alive.

Despite the efforts of the army below him, the monster didn't seem to be close to stopping. It continued to rage and scream, but didn't as much as stumble as it continued to tear down the people before it with its fiery breath.

Kit was going to have to hurry up if he wanted there to be a people left to save.

The monster let out an agonised roar which made Kit jump, he hadn't done anything to make the creature cry out in the last second. He looked down, to see what was either the most stupid or the most brave thing he had ever seen.

Romany, armed with two sharp knives, was dragging herself up the leg of the monster. Using the weapons like axes to gain purchase and pull herself further along. Kit felt his heart leap into his throat.

She wouldn't be able to survive the fall nearly as well as he had done.

Yet she didn't seem to care about this, her eyes were narrowed as she forced herself higher and higher. The concentrating clear on her face even from his position of metres away, his heart in his throat as he watched her struggle. Forgetting all of the pain in his own frame, and being filled with terror for her.

Guessing that there would be little he could do to stop her, without distracting her enough to get her killed. Kit did what he was able to distract the monster from noticing her presence. He tore at the creature with everything he had. With a renewed energy, he did what he could to tear pieces out of the beast.

It roared and screamed in pain, continuing to light the world with its fire. Kit didn't know how many remained standing to fire, but the continuous sound of bullets soared from below. Ripping through and into the monster, he couldn't stop the cry which tore from his throat when a rock tumbled into his side. Throwing his hips out and making him begin to slip from the shoulder of the massive creature.

"Pretty sure I asked you to not get yourself killed," came a voice from above him.

Romany.

"You're doing a great help in making sure I didn't," he panted as he heaved himself back onto the shoulder of the monster. Gasping for breath, the exhaustion beginning to set in fully, yet the adrenaline pumping through his veins kept him on his paws.

She didn't do Kit's words the honour of responding, her eyes only on the task before them. Kit could see the hairs standing up on the back of her neck from a couple of metres away.

"Please tell me that you have a plan," her words were desperate. Yet there seemed to be an understanding that she doubted that there would be one.

"Not the slightest," Kit whispered lowly, his ears on point as he watched the creature. His eyes following the creature's every movement.

It didn't look as though they had weakened the monster even slightly. In spite of the efforts they had put into bringing the beast down.

He didn't have a clue how many bullets the men and women below them had left, but Kit doubted that it was going to be many. If they wanted this to be over with some survivors, they would have to work and work fast.

Armed only with the pair of knives she had used to drag herself to the vantage point, Romany turned. Carefully stepping across then now tattered shoulders of the monster, she walked with purpose whereas Kit moved in terror. He watched her silently, shadowing her footsteps as best as he could without slipping.

To slip would have easily broken one of his legs, and at this height that would have almost definitely meant death.

However, he didn't care as much about this then he did about ensuring the woman before him stayed safe. He followed her closely, providing something to lean against should she slip. They worked together carefully as they made their way across the shoulders of the monster.

Kit didn't know what plan she had in mind, but it was better then his non-existent one, and would be willing to do anything to ensure that she stayed safe.

For a moment Kit thought she had tripped as she very suddenly went down on one knee. He looked back at her, prepared to try and help her back to her feet. Only to realise that she had a purpose in doing so.

Taking one of the knives, she began meticulously driving it into a large gap between the scales of the creature. Her face flushed with the effort, but she didn't move to take a breath or pause. Forcing it deeper and deeper, eliciting a screech from the beast. The ground itself seemed to shake with the sound but Kit didn't hesitate.

Awkwardly with only one front paw, Kit began to do what he could to help her dig away at the gap. Guessing what she was trying to do, and hoping his efforts would help her.

Pummelling away with everything he had, the monster continued to yell and howl in pain. It's fiery breath lighting the world with flames. Kit forced himself to concentrate on what was happening. Digging deeper and deeper.

Until they could go no deeper, and with a sudden force. The world seemed to go bright.

With the second heavy shudder, Kit fell as he and Romany were thrown from their vantage point. He panicked as he watched her slip, but she found her footing in a lower crevice, and Kit landed hard a little further down.

Then with the second explosion Kit had ever experienced. The pair were thrown, Kit cried out and lunged. Intersecting with the falling enemy and landing hard.

In the depths of the flames, the world around them went black.
