::Chapter 2:: Plan
Clearly taken by surprise, the great monster spun to face the opponent as Christopher landed on his back. Only to find that the creature had no shoulders that he could land on, and he fell almost perfectly through him.
Landing hard, the air was knocked from his lungs for a split second. However, he had almost no time to regain his balance. As the monster turned and went to bite him, it's actions accompanied by an inhumane screech.
Fully aware that a single bite delivered by this creature would easily snap him in half, Kit dragged himself to his paws and dodged left. Missing the bite of the monster by the width of his hair.
How the hell are we going to do this? Kit thought in terror, watching for a moment as Max dove again. Trying to make his talons find purchase on anything which might have allowed him to injure the monster, but failing every time.
Max had the advantage of height that Christopher couldn't dream of having, and even he was struggling. He couldn't begin to imagine as to how he was going to be able to fight this beast if the eagle was finding it impossible.
After almost half a decade in isolation on this island, fighting these monsters, protecting his friends. He had been long certain that he knew every creature, monster or otherwise, which inhabited this island. The destructive creature before them was indicative of something very much different.
The ungainly beast turned again, his eyes alight with rage and it lowered his head. Preparing to charge for Kit. It opened it's jaws to reveal it's seemingly endless rows of fangs, which given half the chance it would drive them into Christopher and Max.
It lunged at Christopher, who crouched preparing to lunge. It didn't matter which way, but he knew that if he wanted to see the light of morning. He was going to need to get out of the way of the creature's hateful teeth.
Forcing himself to wait until the last moment, the opportune moment, tensing every muscle and waiting against his every instinct to run for his life. There was nowhere left to run, his only option was to stay and fight. Even if it ended up being for his life.
With the beast at least somewhat distracted, Kit threw his head to the sky and howled as loudly as he could force his lungs to go. Praying that someone would hear his pleas to send help
Christopher paused, watching as the animal came closer and closer. Then lunged with all the power he could muster. Dodging the fangs of the brutish animal only just, and lunging through his legs and to the trees on the other side of it.
Watching the animal turn, searching desperately for any sign of weakness. When he caught one, it wasn't much for them to work with, but it was something. Now, he simply needed to figure out how to use it to their advantage.
Gesturing for Max to come closer, the bird swooped down and landed with a thud beside him. His breath coming out in short pants. He looked at the older wolf with hope filled eyes, "For the love of god, please tell me that you have a plan."
"Not exactly," Kit replied exchanging a quick with the younger man, but otherwise not taking his eyes away from the beast before them. "It's slow, he can barely make corners because of how damned big he is. If we are able to wear him down and try not to get in front of his face, we might be able to bring him down."
Stifling the snort which rose to the back of his throat, whilst Kit didn't exactly blame him for the lack of enthusiasm. Kit let out a low growl, now was hardly the time for him to be making stark remarks about their situation.
Ducking his head in a half apology, though from the grimace on his face it was apparent that he didn't mean it. "Exactly what do you plan to do when we manage to wear him down?"
Cursing the younger man for his use of logic, Kit rolled his eyes and swore vehemently beneath his breath before responding a little sharper then he intended. "We're going to have to burn that bridge when we come to it."
"We don't exactly have much other choice," Max admitted against his better judgement. Spreading his wings, Max returned to the skies and began his attack again.
Pausing, he watched the bird for a split second before following suit, trying to implement the plan between them. However, it turned out to be vastly more difficult then they had realised.
It seemed as though the creature was doing something entirely knew. It was learning.
Not a single creature that he had been faced with before, had shown any indication that it could learn from it's mistakes. To figure out the weaknesses of its opponents and use it to their advantage. Yet here this beast was watching them, and using any weakness the exhibited to it's advantage.
Christopher felt a twinge in the place where his left arm had once been, and he cringed inwardly. Before dodging right and lunging for the beast again.
If it were true, he simply had to work with his own weaknesses and do what he could to overcome them and save his friend.
Kit threw himself towards the monster again, his paws scrambling to find purchase as he dodged left and right between the legs of the massive monster. His breath coming out in heavy pants, as he worked hard to distract and bewilder the strange creature. Doing what he could to keep both himself and his friend safe.
An inhumane screech echoed across the area. It's sound reverberating, rattling inside Kit's brain. He shook himself, confused for a brief moment. The animal took it's opportunity, hooking its head beneath the wolf and heaving upwards. Sending Kit into a tree with a mighty crack.
Dazed and hurting badly, Kit opened his eye about half way. To see the monster turning towards him, preparing for the final charge. He struggled to his feet, but his knees buckled inwards.
Max swerved around, and dove for the monster. Tearing his talons through the air as he tried to catch hold of anything which may have allowed him to injure the hateful beast before him. However, his efforts were in vain. As the animal continued to charge.
Panting hard, he dragged himself back to his feet. Forcing himself to stay standing in spite of the screams his muscles let out. He froze, as a realisation hit him. He stared at the animal in silence for half a second. Before lunging.
In mid air, Kit changed direction. First assuring that he had the attention of the monster, he lunged back from where he came from. In the opposite direction to the lookout camp, and drawing him further and further away.
The eagle screed, diving until he was flying as fast as his wings could take him alongside Kit. He asked in a confused tone, "Where the hell are you going?" He demanded, his own breaths coming out in pained pants. Blood seeping from different parts of his body, Kit guessed that he was in a similar state.
Kit hardly had the chance to answer as he lunged across the ground, a destination now firmly in his mind. He could only pray that he would get there in time before the beast caught up with them.
"Just trust me," he growled beneath his breath as he tore across the ground. The exhaustion beginning to hit him quick, that coupled with the agony rippling through him, made it hard for him to think straight.
The friends broke from the treeline, and continued to tear across the landscape. Until the two towering concrete masses came into view. The old power plant.
Holding his breath, as the air in this area was still uncomfortable to breath. Kit's paws took him easily across the land. Breathing hard but he pushed himself on, his paws struggling to find purchase on the destroyed earth which became thinner the closer to the power plants the pair came.
Beating his wings, Max took to the skies beside him, leaving Christopher as the sole source of attention for the beast chasing them. He darted left and right, trying to make as much ground on the animal as he could.
Once he felt that he couldn't make any more distance if he tried, Kit skidded to a stop and started to dig as hard and as fast as he was able to. Spraying dirt everywhere, when the ground began to shake again, indicating the approach of the beast. He lunged out of the hole he'd created and continued to run.
Kit dodged out of the way by the skin of his teeth, skidding to a stop just in time to see the beast fall, hard. The explosion had ruined the earth, and the radiation had all but destroyed what was left. The ground beneath them was largely hollow.
Angling his ears down, the creature was trapped, but he didn't know for how long. They needed to work fast if they were going to finish this.
Lunging from three legs back onto two, he searched himself desperately. Praying that he'd remembered to pick it up, his heart heaved when he found the small box in his pocket.
Matches.
He struck one, and through it down.
The beast screamed. A metallic agonised sound, which made Kit's ears cringe. It was over quick, the creature's form caught on fire and went out like a light. It exploded, and Christopher threw himself down to avoid the flames.
Returning to his legs, he looked down. It was gone, it was over.
"How the hell did you know that was going to work?" gasped Max, still struggling to catch his breath.
"I didn't," Kit replied panting for air. "Just be thankful it worked, we should get back and tell the other's what happened."
