Chapter Twenty-Two

If it had been acceptable to do so, all of Yoongi's friends would have jumped up and cheered in the courtroom when his statement was done. As soon as the connection on the camera was ended, Seokjin actually did in the hospital room.

"Yoongi," he said, tears in his eyes. "That was perfect." He threw his arms around Yoongi. "I'm so proud of you."

Yoongi smiled. "Thank you, Jin. I'm pretty proud of myself, too."

"As you should be! Oh my god, did you see the look on Chul's face? He was raging! He knows he's fucked!"

Yoongi chuckled. "I don't know how the verdict will go, but I feel like I can truly move on now. And that's all I've ever wanted."

"Move on of your own accord? Or with a certain someone?"

Yoongi's cheeks flushed. "Why can't it be both?"

Seokjin laughed. "Fair enough. You deserve all the good things!"

A couple of hours later, Yoongi received a call from Mr. Park. "The jury came to a decision," he said. "Would you like to watch the verdict?"

"Yes, please," Yoongi said, and Mr. Park connected the camera again. This time, Yoongi wasn't on the TV, but simply watching from the prosecutor's table.

"We, the jury, find the defendant, Lee Chul, guilty of the charges of domestic abuse in the first degree, rape in the first degree, two counts of assault and battery, breaking and entering, and destruction of property."

Yoongi gasped. Those were all the charges. Chul had been found guilty on all charges. He couldn't believe it.

The judge thanked the jury for their time, and adjourned the court, letting everyone know that the sentencing would take place in two days time.

Just before the connection was again ended, Yoongi heard his friends cheering and high-fiving and he smiled. But then he heard a solitary sob, and his chest constricted. There was no mistaking it; it was Namjoon. Tears filled Yoongi's eyes, too, and for the first time in a long time, he allowed himself to cry. But this time, they were happy tears.

-

Yoongi and Seokjin had just finished up eating dinner when the door to Yoongi's room flew open. It was like a clown car as four of the others ran in, one after the other. They were all talking at the same time, and Yoongi couldn't make out anything any of them were saying. He laughed. "Slow down, guys!"

One held back, standing in the doorway, watching silently. Yoongi met his eyes, and tears began rolling down both of their cheeks.

"Joon."

Everyone else quieted down. Namjoon moved into the room and toward Yoongi.

"Yoongs."

Yoongi held out his arms, and Namjoon fell into them. They both began crying harder, saying so much more through their embrace and tears than they ever could in words.

Watching them caused all of the others to tear up as well. Once they broke apart, Namjoon moved back and Yoongi's eyes found Jungkook's.

They stared at each other for a few moments before Jungkook rushed forward, placed his hands on either side of Yoongi, leaned down, and pressed his lips against Yoongi's. There were cheers all around the room as Yoongi put his arms around Jungkook's neck, holding him there to make the kiss last longer. When they finally broke apart, they rested their foreheads together.

"When you get out of here, I'm taking you on a celebratory date," Jungkook said.

"Fine by me," Yoongi replied.

The next day, the doctor came with the news that, after a couple more tests and getting a wrist surgery scheduled, Yoongi could go home. It was a much needed win for Yoongi, who was getting very tired of sitting around the hospital doing nothing.

This, of course, meant that Yoongi would be available to go to Chul's sentencing. He debated for a long time as to whether or not he wanted to go, but he ultimately decided to. If there was anything better than telling Chul he was free of him, it was showing him that he was.

So the next day, surrounded by his friends, Yoongi entered the courtroom. He was invited to sit at the prosecutor's table and he accepted. He could get a better view of Chul from there.

And Chul took every opportunity to shoot daggers at Yoongi. But Yoongi simply met his eyes and smiled, which seemed to enrage Chul even more. And Yoongi found that, rather than feeling afraid, he was at peace.

24 and a half years.

Ten years for abuse, Ten years for rape, a year and a half for each assault and battery charge, one year for breaking and entering, and six months for destruction of property.

Chul would be in prison for the next 24 and a half years. He would not be getting out until he was almost 50 years old.

As he was being led out of the courtroom, Chul looked over at Yoongi one last time. He spat on the floor in Yoongi's direction. A soft smile appeared on Yoongi's lips.

"Goodbye, Chul."
