Falling In Love
I've taken to sleeping at the hospital. Leaving Dylan alone always seems like a gamble. I never know when he's gonna relapse or something. The fourth or fifth night I do this I'm just drifting off when I hear him whisper my name.
"You awake?"
"Noooooo, I'm asleep. Shut up."
I hear him snicker and then it goes silent.
"Come here."
I sit up.
"What?"
"You heard me."
I slip out from under the thin blanket and pad over to the side of his bed.
"More here."
I giggle and sit on the edge of his bed. I can feel his hip at the base of my spine.
"Better?"
"Mm, no."
"Dylan." I whisper, thankful for the darkness that hides the blush on my cheeks.
"Come on, we both know I'm not strong enough to do anything to you."
That makes me laugh outright, and I know he's telling the truth.
I take a deep breath and slowly lay down next to him, resting my head on his chest. His arm wraps around my waist, mine on his chest. The look on the nurse's face in the morning is completely priceless.
The next morning, as I'm brushing my teeth and getting ready for another day, I realize that I haven't seen or heard of any of Dylan's family. I walk out of the bathroom and figure it can't hurt to ask him about it.
"So... where's your family?"
"I was wondering when you would ask."
I half smile and wait for him to go on.
"Can we have this discussion in the park?"
"Yeah, okay."
We walk hand in hand to the park, and find our usual bench. He sits, and I lay down on the bench, my head in his lap. He smiles down at me and fondly slips his fingers into my hair.
"Well, my family is actually in a different state. Since I'm technically an adult, they shipped me off here. It has a better Cancer research center and they figured I could take care of myself."
"They didn't even come when you went into a coma??"
He looks down at me and I see tears glittering in his eyes.
"No."
I sit up, propelled by some animal desire deep inside me and put a hand on his cheek, turning his face to me.
"I'm sorry," I whisper, our faces so close that our noses are nearly touching, "You are so much better than them."
As if to prove my point, I close the gap and press my lips to his.
The kiss lasts forever, and when I finally pull away he's got the most adorable grin on his face.
"I was wondering when you'd do that."
I giggle and kiss the tip of his nose.
"I love you," I whisper in his ear.
"I know."
