Holy hell I had to do so much research for this chapter

TRIGGER WARNINGS : attempted suicide, talks about sexual assault, hospital setting

Roman POV
Panic jolted through me instantly. I ran out onto the bridge towards Virgil as fast I could.

"Virgil no!" I screamed, holding him hand to him.

But the bridge was too long. I was too far from him. He either didn't me or chose to ignore me. I ran as fast as I could.

I ran faster.  Please let me reach him before he falls.  I heard the myself yelling to Virgil, trying to call to him.  Trying to convince him to get down.

I kept running down the side of the bridge.  It was such a big bridge, I feared I wouldn't make it to him on time.

I watched as he shakily pulled his legs up to him.  Yes please be reconsidering... just get down. I begged and pleaded with him in my mind.

Instead, Virgil got up on shaky legs.  He stood, teetering on the edge.  He held his arms out for balance, but there was nothing for him to grab onto.

"NO NO NO!"  I screamed at him.  "VIRGIL DON'T JUMP!"

Virgil started leaning forwards over the edge.  Fear jolted through me.  I pushed myself farther.

"VIRGIL!" I screamed as he fell forwards.  A painful jolt of panic shot through my chest.

I reached him.  I leaned over the edge trying to grab him as he plummeted down towards the ice and water.

My hand just barely grazed his. I watched in horror as Virgil went plummeting down towards the ice and raging waters below.

"NO!" I screamed as tears streamed down my face.

There was no scream.  He made no sound as he fell.  There was a splash and Virgil's body disappeared into the water.

I let out a scream. A gut wrenching scream of ours mental anguish. I fell to my knees as I looked desperately in the water for Virgil.

But he never returned to the surface.

I fumbled for my phone, pulling from my pocket. I dialed 911, holding my shaking hand to my ear.

"You've reaches 911, please state your emergency," The operator said.

"My boyfriend slipped and he fell over the bridge. We're at Opal Gorge at the bridge. He fell into the river. I can't see him, he hadn't come back up," I rambled, only now realizing how much I was sobbing.

"Okay, I'm going to need you to calm down," She told me. "We have an ambulance on the way. It should be about ten minutes. Can you see your boyfriend at all?"

"No," I sobbed. "He just disappeared. I don't see him at all."

The operator kept talking to me but I could barely focus on it. I clutched onto the railing, my eyes racking through the water.

I begged and pleaded with whatever god was out there to save Virgil. To not let him die.

I moved my phone from my ear and got back up. I bolted back across the bridge and turned to follow the gorge.

Thankfully it was winter so there was no leaves and brush to get in my way. I could hear the operator trying to talk to me but I ignored her.

There was a path that led down to the rocky beach around the river. I ran down the path, trying my best to watch out for ice, sticks, and rocks.

Upon reaching the beaches, I stumbled to the edge of the water and looked for Virgil. I ran down edge, jumping over rocks.

Finally I spotted a flash of purple among the grey rocks and water. His hoodie had gotten tangled in a branch. He was a good fifteen feet from shore.

Without even thinking about it, I dropped my phone on the rock and pulled off my jacket. I launched myself into the water.

I dragged myself through the water that eventually reached up past my waist. The water was freezing cold but I didn't care.

I grabbed onto Virgil's hoodie and pulled him to my chest. I dragged him back to shore.

Collapsing on the rocks, I took a few seconds to catch my breath. I turned back to Virgil, resting him in my lap.

There was a bleeding cut on his forehead, half of it hidden by his hair. His left leg was bent at an odd angle.

I saw the faint flash of police lights on the rocks across from me.  I saw few police officers and paramedics rush out onto the bridge.

They were looking around, eventually one started shouting and pointing at me.  I just sobbed, holding onto Virgil tightly.

This is all my fault.

Paramedics rushed around me, gently pulling Virgil from my arms and onto a stretch. A police woman sat down in front of me. She gave me a sympathetic look, pulling at her notebook.

"I understand you must be in a lot of sadness right now," She said. "But I'm going to need for you to tell me what happened."

I took a shaky breath. I can't say that Virgil was trying to kill himself. He'll get out back in a mental hospital and that's is the last thing he needs.

"We were on a date, we were taking a walk because I was nice out. He was sat on the railing and then I got up with him. He were just laughing and joking but then he lost his balance. He fell backwards and I didn't grab him in time," I lied but I had to stop and clamp my hand over my mouth and squeeze my eyes shut. I started sobbing heavily again.

All I could think about was Virgil falling. How I barely grazed his hand before he went plummeting down.

"Can you tell me your name and the name of your boyfriend?" She asked me once I calmed down a bit.

"I'm Roman Prince, he's Virgil Pierce," I told her. She nodded, writing everything down on her notepad.

A paramedic came back and took Virgil's name.   Then he turned to me.

"He's alive but he needs to revive medical attention immediately.  You can ride in the ambulance with us and you need to be checked for hypothermia."  He told me.  I just nodded numbly, standing up slowly.

I grabbed my jacket and pulled it back on.  Picking up my phone, I followed the paramedic to the ambulance.

He told me to sit on the little bench.  He also said I could hold Virgil's hand once they got an IV going, which I did instantly.

I pulled out my phone and shakily opened the group chat.  I started typing, but I had to stop multiple times so I wouldn't start crying again.

Me - Virgil fell off the bridge.  He's alive but we're on our way to the hospital.  Meet me there.  Don't say this was attempted suicide.  I'm going with Virgil and I were just hanging out when he accidentally lost his balance and fell over the railing

I shut my phone, ignoring the mass of worried texts that followed.  I stayed silent the entire ambulance ride back to the hospital.

I stared numbly at Virgil laying in the hospital bed.  He had to get stitches for his head and a cast for his leg.

Luckily neither of us got hyperthermia.  My body temperature didn't drop but they still gave me a heated blanket.  Virgil's body temperature did drop two degrees but that's not enough for hyperthermia to set in.

They said they think he landed on his left leg, causing the tibia to shatter, his femur to break, and his hip to dislocate.  The force them caused him to fall forwards and hit his head.

They don't think he'll be able to walk again.  Femurs don't heal easily and it's incredibly painful to break.

Virgil might be able to walk with physical therapy but even then, he might always have a limp from now on.

His hip was reset and they believe that his tibia will heal fine with proper rest.  Virgil will have to be in a full leg cast for roughly five months.  But they do think his leg will have completely healed before graduation.

However, it was the head wound that worried the doctors.  They think it might have been bad enough for him to get amnesia.  The doctors do think it will just be temporary and he'll remember everything eventually.

But it's still a scary thought.

Thankfully Virgil didn't cut himself.  That would've been almost impossible to explain to the doctors.

One nurse did talk to me about how they notice the scars on his wrists and thighs and asked me about them.  I just said he has a rough life but I've been helping him.

She said that Virgil will have to go into therapy for the scars.  Even if he has stopped, they think the scars are enough for him to have to take therapy.

She also asked about all of Virgil's bruises.  I hated having to explain about his parents.  I don't even want to think about how badly Virgil's Dad beat him when he went back home.

The nurses face turned into a grim expression.  She left pretty quickly after that.  But I could here her talking to an officer in the hallway about what I told her about Virgil's Dad.

The bruises on him now I know weren't there this morning.  And he hadn't dealt with Jackson today.

Everyone had stopped by earlier when Virgil was finally allowed visitors.  He was still asleep but everyone still came by.

Patton was sobbing when all our friends came by.  They all apologized to me for getting angry about the Jackson thing.  Yet again, I'm extremely thankful for Remus.

"Hey Ro,"  Remus's voice came from the door.  I turned towards him.  "Mom wants you to come get some dinner.  She'll let you stay overnight if it's okay with the doctors but she wants you to come home and change clothes and get some food."

"Okay,"  I mumbled, turning back to Virgil.

"You can't stay here the entire time,"  Remus told me.  He walked into the room and stood next to me.

"I can't thank you enough for taking that video,"  I said.  "But why didn't you step in and help me?"

"I wanted to but Issac wouldn't let me," He said. "He kept stopping me and I didn't really want to fight with him again. I wouldn't done something if he tried to get in your pants but you ran. Issac was mad when I sent you guys the text and that's why I got the bruise."

I looked back up at him and looked at the dark bruise on my check. I could faintly see the outline of rings in his skin.

"Sorry," I mumbled. "And I am begging you to leave him. And I know you're really into Damien, Evan and Quinn."

"Issac does love me, he...he just struggles showing it," Remus said lowly. "And they don't like me..."

Neither of us said anything now. The awkwardness in the air was think enough to cut with a knife now.

"Let's just go," Remus huffed. He turned quickly on his heels and left.

I stood up slowly, not wanting to leave Virgil's side. I slowly let go of Virgil's hand, but his hand tightening on mine.

Virgil let out a little grunt, making me spin around quickly. He slowly open his eyes and his hand was moving in mine.

"Where...where am I?" Virgil mumbled, a distant look in his eyes.
