Chapter 3
(What I imagine Caleb looks like)
I made my way to my desk and plopped down on my chair. Karter, Leslie and Chase - my drinking buddies from last night - all looked at me with concern. I huffed and then rolled my eyes at them.
"What?" I asked although I already knew what they wanted to know.
"What did she say to you?" Leslie asked. Her face covered in makeup.
"Nothing much. The usual snobbiness. She mentioned that there's a new trainee?"
"Yeah," Karter answered, "his name's Caleb and he's -"
"Cute," Leslie finished with a sly smile.
Karter sighed, "That's not what I was going to say,"
Leslie wiggled her eyebrows at me and I shook my head at her.
"The dragon doesn't want me messing up this one," I replied remembering Margaret's words.
"She really said that? " Chase asked, an amused looked on his face.
"More or less," I answered before swiveling my chair towards my desk.
"Doesn't matter though. I'm not looking for anyone and even if I was, a church boy wouldn't be the one," I said confidently.
"It could be a good change for you. A good distraction from Ronnie," Karter said encouragingly.
My cheeks flushed immediately. Ronnie was an insurance agent that only came into the office once a week. I've had a crush on him since I started working at Omega last September. We've never really spoken and I doubt he even remembers my name. My co-workers say that I'm not his type nor would I want to be as he never settles with one girl for long. Somehow I've managed to convince myself that if he gave me a chance it would be different.
"Really Karter? You want to see me soil this precious saint of a boy?"
"You make it sound like you're carrying a disease," Chase said with a laugh.
"Who's carrying a disease?" I heard someone ask.
I spun my chair around to get a look at the speaker.
It was a young man with smooth, dark skin. His eyes were an unusual shade of carmel brown and his face was framed by a neatly trimmed beard. I was taken a back. There weren't many black males at our office, and as a melanin queen myself, I'll admit that the brother did look very fine.
I gathered myself quickly and stood to introduce myself.
"Hi. I'm Nevaeh," I stretched out my hand in greeting.
"Caleb," he replied with a smile and gave my hand a firm shake.
"We should be getting back to work," Leslie said, "wouldn't want the dragon spewing fire at us,"
The others dispersed and I took my seat again at my desk.
"So who's the dragon? Do you guys insure mythical creatures here too?"
Caleb asked with a smile. I made out the faintest hint of indents in his cheeks. He had dimples.
"Yes along with Unicorns, trolls and elven folk," I replied before giving him a smirk.
"Ahh I see,"
"The dragon is what we call our supervisor Margaret. You'll soon learn why," I informed him.
"Do you know your name is heaven spelt backwards?" He asked suddenly.
I nodded a yes.
"My mother says it's to remind her of the place she'll want to go to after death," I spoke without thinking. My trainee didn't need to know that.
"Your mother is a wise woman," he replied.
"Do you believe in heaven?" he asked again.
I shrugged.
"I've heard about it," came my reply.
Caleb nodded.
"Anyways, let's get started with your training. Margaret the dragon will come out of her office to prey soon and I'm her target for the day,"
He chuckled, "alright boss lady. Let's get started."
