Race to Rocky Road (NehpetsEnal)
Race to Rocky Road
Following instruction from Denver, Conan quickly gathered together a band of men and women.
When he told the crew, it was to ambush the bunch of rough customers they'd had in the night before, there was a rush of women, many with an axe to grind.
He wasn't worried about their sex, they just needed the guts to stand in the firing line and be capable of shooting a gun.He could have done with more time to prepare, but by the time they reached the Patchi River Bridge, the sky was afire with bright flashes from explosions in the heart of town.
It appears that Denver's concerns, based on Talulah's information were well placed.
The disorganized band had no time to barricade the road before the sound of pounding hoofs and screeching wheels could be heard rounding the bend, but they stood their ground and showered the two oncoming wagons with a hail of hot lead.
The first wagon veered to one side as a stray shot wounded one of the horses, the second wagon sheltered behind the first just carried on.They peppered it with more hot lead, the bullets whistled past Sol's and Rolo's heads, punching holes in the flapping covers.
They must have had the devil's luck as it seemed that neither was hit, and they charged on regardless.
They made it to the bridge, the ambushers had no choice but to scatter or be splattered by the heavily laden wagon.
Sol was disappointed that he'd not had the pleasure of hearing crushing bones, still expressed his delight on seeing the ragged band scattered to the wind, as they escaped across the bridge, to Rocky Road and open country. He didn't see Teddy wagon derailed.
The band quickly got to its feet and raced to the wagon that had veered off the road and plunged into the river, it was a sorry sight with all its contents washing away with the current.
You'd think the floating cash would be easy pickings, but who wants to jump in a raging river after dark, but no doubt a few bills found their way into garters?
Denver was not going to be a happy man, he didn't want the money, just the pleasure of returning it to the bank.
However, Talulah was another kettle of fish, she would have been expecting a big cut of the money, which she would have reported as washed away, even without this unfortunate turn of events.
It took a while before the sound of pounding hoofs were heard again, but this time it was a lonesome Sheriff who was giving chase.
He had a determined and deathly look upon his face, if he caught up, it's unlikely there would be any prisoners taken.
There was no sign of the wagon driver, he was either injured and swept away with the current or he'd made his escape by swimming across the river.
Either way, they figured he'd likely end up drowning, which would deprive them of a hanging and save another bullet.
