Up To Fate
It was raining again and Lindsey is standing at the bus stop. He actually didn't have to go anywhere today but he hoped he would see her. She told him fate would bring them together if they were truly meant to be and he hoped that were true. He really did like her, even if he had only met her once. He waited and waited, when suddenly there she was. A blue dress, long. Radiant as ever, hair done in some kind of updo with soft curls around her face.
"Hey" she said, simply.
"Hey."
"Raining again."
"Yeah. I uh, have my umbrella, if you wanna share."
"Sure." She tried her best not to look interested but hurried beneath all the same. She looked up at him, stubble on his chin, his hair so thick and dark. She fought running her fingers through it- much too forward.
"So what are your big plans today? Going to meet up with your friend again?"
"No, I just came from this little bandstand event. They let all the girls model dresses from a local department store. It's gonna be televised."
"Neat! Remember me when you're famous" Lindsey said and she smiled at him.
"I'm hardly famous." She says. "But with you in a band and being Mr. Rockstar, I'd venture to say you will be the famous one."
"No way. You're special. Someone is bound to notice you."
"Thanks." They stand in silence as other people gather around, waiting for the same bus.
"This bus is always freakin late. You'd think they'd have to answer to someone about that."
"You'd think." Stevie says. "I don't mind waiting a little longer though. Good things come to those who wait."
Lindsey loves her optimism, her sweet disposition. She's interesting to him, though he doesn't know a lot about her. She just doesn't seem like the other girls he's met. She's mysterious, mystical even. When the bus comes, he places a hand on her lower back as she boards before him. She smiles at the action, feeling the light pressure through her dress. There was hardly room to sit so they stood, creeping closer and closer to each other. Each decided without words that they would savor this moment. They met again, same place, but the timing was a little different. Is this what 'meant to be' means?
Stevie studied his features- big blue-grey eyes, dark hair, slightly golden skin, tanned as if he spent a lot of time outside. He seemed sure of himself but awkward too. He's so cute when he's nervous, she thought. She wrapped her arm around his, and he let her relax into him. That smile! Oh how it could light up a room! But his energy was intrusive, it was casual, but he had presence. He was the kind of guy you'd notice when he came into the room. She wondered what he would look like, sound like when he played the guitar he had with him the other day. Was he passionate? Did he get carried away like she did when music seemed to fill her up completely? She imagined that he would. He's tall, slim but he was well built. Maybe he played baseball? No...he must be a swimmer. She imagined him being very athletic, gifted with strength and stamina. She sighed, he really is so beautiful. She let her head fall to his upper arm, resting there as they bumped along the road.
Lindsey was also lost in thought, not noticing her eyes on him at all. He liked her and he hoped she liked him too. She was small, petite in every way and so striking. He wouldn't have been able to pinpoint her age had she not told him she was in college. He imagined her to be youthful even as she grew older. She would keep him alive and vibrant. She had an untamable nature that completely drew him in. Not that she was a bad girl, but more that she was free. So free that nothing and no one could hold her. She was graceful and curious. Her eyes absorbed everything and she was obviously observant but they were sort of dreamy, too. Her voice was soft and a little rough but he liked that too. Her skin was smooth, her face poreless and angelic. Her full pouty lips called to him and he longed to kiss her by how could he? He didn't want to risk getting slapped, or worse, scaring her off. He felt her head on his arm and he imagined what it would be like if she did this all the time. He sighed as well, knowing their ride would be over soon. People were getting on and off in regular intervals and soon, he knew one of them would have to leave.
The bus came to a stop and the doors opened. A couple of people got on and a couple got off.
"This is me" Stevie said and Lindsey thought he sensed a certain sadness in her voice.
"Oh" Lindsey replied.
"Thank you for shielding from the rain again."
"Any time" he said.
"Good bye" she said. She waved slowly and only once. Was she waiting for him to make a move?, Lindsey wondered. Surely not. He watched her go, but not without wanting to go after her again. He sat there for a few moments, only to realize the whole reason he waited at the bus stop was to see her. He could have gotten off at her stop but he missed his chance, the bus was already moving again. He sat and sat until the bus was nearly empty.
"End of the line" the bus driver announced and Lindsey got off. He walked several blocks back in the opposite direction. The rain had gone, the sun had come out and now it was sticky. The dampness made the coming heat uncomfortable. Soon, he had enough and sat down at another stop, unsure of where he actually was now. Another bus came promptly and he made his way home alone.
A/N: hope this chapter wasn't a major bummer. It will pick up soon, I promise!
