Love Grows

Six Years Later;

"Mommy, why couldn't we just take the car?"

"Because today is special day, Amber. We are going to meet Daddy to celebrate his birthday."

"But it's raining!"

"I know, sweetheart. That's why we brought our umbrella."

"Where are we going?"

"You're so full of questions today!" Stevie said with a laugh, looking down at her little girl. She wore her curly brown hair in two braids down her back, secured with ribbons at the ends. Her big blue eyes were curious as she stared up at her mother and Stevie's heart nearly burst every time because she looked so much like her daddy. The little girl wore blue jeans, a rainbow striped tee shirt, sneakers and a corduroy jacket. "There is a little diner Daddy and I used to go to many years ago. He told me that's where he wanted to go and...no, maybe I shouldn't tell you." Stevie teased, knowing her daughter would press her for information, just like Lindsey would.

"You shouldn't tell me what?" she asked, and Stevie smirked.

"Oh, nothing"

"Come on, mommy! Is it a secret?"

"Well, kind of. It's just something Daddy told me and he said I shouldn't tell."

"I can keep a secret" Amber continued and Stevie giggled, giving in.

"Alright...I guess I can tell you since you're so good at keeping secrets." They arrived at the bus stop and Amber looked up at her mother with wide eyes. "Daddy said that when we go eat, he's going to get you a milkshake."

"A milkshake?" she asked excitedly. "What flavor?"

"They have so many to choose from, baby girl. He said you could have any one of them you wanted!" Stevie smiled at her daughter, stroking her face as she bent down to talk to her.

"Wow!"

"But don't tell him I told you, okay?"

"Don't worry, I'll act natural" Amber said and Stevie laughed again.

"You're so your father's child."

Stevie stood humming a song she had been working on, impatiently tapping her boots on the pavement. Amber let go of her hand, burying herself into the side of her mother's calico skirt covered leg. Stevie looked down at her and smiled, and Amber returned it. She had lost her first tooth and there was a gap where one of her upper front teeth used be. As the soft rain fell, it mesmerized both of them- Amber thinking of all the different flavors of milkshakes she could possibly come up with and Stevie, being flooded with memories.

She thought back to birthdays and holidays spent at home, just the three of them. She thought about anniversaries and their wedding taking place a year after Amber was born. Lastly, she thought about how wonderful Lindsey had been when she had discovered their pregnancy. Amber was a complete surprise to them and he was happy from the second he knew. The day after she had told him, they had gone to brunch at this beautiful alfresco restaurant. She remembered requesting glass after glass of orange juice and Lindsey thought it was so cute. He would soon find out that would be a lasting craving for Stevie and he would keep it on hand at all times, it even being a gift when he visited her a couple of times. The distance was too much and Lindsey's father helped him rent a small house near Stevie's school so he could be closer. Eventually, she moved in as well and took a break from her studies with only one semester left to focus on the baby and her relationship with Lindsey. Though her parents weren't thrilled about her giving up school, she promised to go back and she did after Amber was born. She obtained her degree but ended up not using it due to forming a group with Lindsey after his band had broken up. Amber, so far, had grown up in the San Francisco music scene. She knew all the major acts coming and going as well as some fresh finds, popping up all over the city.

She was brought out of her revery by Amber hopping up and down beside her, shaking her arm.

"What?" Stevie asked.

"Daddy! I see him." Amber pointed and Stevie turned around, catching a glimpse of her husband jogging down the sidewalk.

Lindsey was dressed in a deep v-neck tee shirt and tight wide legged jeans with brown leather flip flops. Stevie chuckled at him as he attempted to dodge raindrops but it was impossible.

"Hey princess" Lindsey said, greeting his daughter.

"Hi daddy"

"Hey, Steph" he said, kissing her.

"Happy birthday." Stevie said, reciprocating the kiss.

"Thanks, angel."

"Happy birthday, daddy! When we get home, I can show you the card I made at school for you!"

"I can't wait, honey."

"Don't you ever wear a coat?" Stevie asked with a smirk.

"Didn't I ask you that same question?"

"Many moons ago, yes." Stevie replied. He gave her a handsome smile and she stroked his face. "You're going to catch cold if you stand out there in the rain. Wanna share our umbrella?"

"No, no. I want my girls safe under there."

"There's plenty of room if we cuddle, Linds." Stevie's lips curled into a flirtatious smile and he nodded.

"Well, alright." He got under the umbrella, taking it over from Stevie.

"Mommy, does this remind you of something?" Amber asked with a curious, thoughtful smile.

"Yeah, it reminds me of a whole lot."

"I met your mother right on this spot years ago" Lindsey said, pressing a kiss to Stevie's hair.

"Really?" Amber asked.

"We never told her how we met?" Lindsey asked and Stevie shook her head. "Well, sweet girl, your mama was the grooviest chick I had ever met. I was younger then, and I was in a band. Your grandpa had taken away the car and I had to catch the bus to band practice. One day it was raining and your mama was wearing this little pink dress with white tights. Her hair was straight and blonde and she was afraid she was late for the bus to meet her friend. She started chatting with me and I was immediately wrapped around her little finger." Stevie laced her fingers with Lindsey's and rose to her tip toes to kiss his cheek. "Anyway, she wouldn't give me her number." Lindsey laughs, as did Amber.

"I wanted the universe to show me we belonged together." Stevie clarified. "And we obviously do because I met him time and time again and we had so much fun together. He would visit me at school all the time."

"Was it love at first sight?" Amber asked, her voice thick with dreamy romance and Lindsey looked at Stevie, his smile broadening.

"It was definitely love at first sight."

"Totally" Stevie agreed. Amber squealed excitedly and her parents laughed. "Wanna know the best part?"

"Yes please!"

"We got you." Lindsey said and Stevie began to tear up. She cuddled up into her husband, his arm now wrapped around her waist while Stevie held onto their daughter's hand. The bus arrived and Lindsey let his ladies on first. He shook out his umbrella and closed it before boarding. The bus began to move as he walked down the aisle. He heard his name and he turned around to see his blonde haired, brown-eyed woman and his brown haired, blue-eyed little girl sitting in the back on the long bench. "Hey, you saved me a seat!" he said.

"Of course I did. Don't I always?" she said giving him a strange look and Lindsey smiled, his mind drifting back to the day they had met.

"Yeah...I guess you do." he said, sitting next to his wife and daughter, squeezing them a little tighter on this special day.
