Is That It?

Stevie called Lindsey in tears and he was hardly able to make out a single word she said. He felt as if it were urgent and he told his father he would need to borrow the car again to see her. It was late in the evening and though Morris didn't really want to let his child venture out there alone in the middle of the night, he knew that it must be important by the look on his face. He slipped him a few bucks for gas and Lindsey was off.

Lindsey tried his best to keep his focus on the road but he kept thinking of Stevie. She was fine when he spoke to her a couple of nights ago. Class had started back up and with Stevie's campus job on top of her studies, they hadn't been able to see each other as much as they had liked. Lindsey's work with the band had ramped up too, playing shows every weekend. The traveling was exhausting in itself.

He zoomed into a guest parking spot and jogged up the walk. He knocked on the door of the off-campus apartment Stevie and Debbie shared, waiting a moment for someone to answer. A few seconds later, Debbie appeared in the doorway, pale as a ghost.

"What happened?" Lindsey asked, eyes wild with fear and concern.

"Lindsey..." was all she could say as he passed by her, heading toward Stevie's room.

He tried the knob but it was locked. He knocked, hearing nothing behind it. "What's going on?" he asked, the fear giving way to anger. "I need answers, Deb."

"She...I..."

"You're scaring me. Did something happen?"

Debbie stared at him blankly. "I have another key...to her room." she said and Lindsey gestured for her to go get it. Debbie rummaged around in the junk drawer in the kitchen then hurried back to him, placing the silver, nondescript key in his hand. He shoved the key into the lock and twisted hard, the door giving way as he pressed his shoulder into it. "Stevie!" he exclaimed, going over to her on her bed. He stroked her face to realize she was crying, her face and neck wet with tears. Her hair clung to the sides of her face and he pushed it back, tucking it behind her ears. "Are you okay?"

"You're here" she said softly, her voice hoarse from crying.

"Of course I am. I was scared to death when you called me. I didn't understand you, you were so worked up. You're still worked up. Did something happen?"

She nodded, trying to sit up but feeling a little weak. He helped her, propping her up on a few of her soft white, frilly pillows. "Linds...Lindsey...." she said, reaching out to touch him. He kicked off his shoes and climbed onto the bed, holding her as she cried. He was at a loss. She clearly couldn't speak and he didn't know what was wrong. The worry was building inside of him and he was about to lose his mind.

"Talk to me, Steph." he said after several minutes, tilting her face up toward his. He leaned in and kissed her lips softly, which only made her cry more. "You can tell me anything, honey, you know that. I love you and I'm not going anywhere, I just don't know what to do here."

"I love you too." she said, tears still streaming down her face. "I'm just scared you won't after I tell you"

"Tell me what?"

"I'm pregnant." As soon as the words left her mouth, she covered her face, sobbing into her hands.

"We're going to have a baby?" he asked, stunned by the news. In all honestly, he tried not to seem happy about this. She was clearly upset and he didn't want to make her feel uncomfortable. It was a new world, what if she didn't intend on keeping it, or what of it wasn't his? He heard about what went on at college campus parties and he didn't know anyone in her class. Could he trust them not to try anything when he wasn't there? Anything could happen and as the silence gained new depth, he wasn't sure if he would like the answer to this question. He rubbed her arms and she took her hands away from her face, looking up at him with watery eyes. She gave a small nod, biting her lip to stop it from quivering. "Really?" She nods again. "Is that it?"

"What do you mean 'is that it'?" she asked, a little hurt that he seemed to be so flippant about her emotions.

"Is that what you're crying about- that you and I are going to be a family?" Lindsey asked and suddenly, Stevie knocked him to the bed crossways, kissing him all over his face. He began to smile as her soft lips brushed across his skin. "That tickles!" he said with a laugh as she continued to kiss his neck several times, going back up to his cheeks. He could still feel her tears falling onto his face but her entire energy had changed. She eventually came up for air, her lips plump and ruby red. "Will you tell me what that was all about? Not that I'm complaining." He sat up, adjusting his clothes and she giggled.

"I just love you" she said, wiping her eyes.

"I love you too." He kissed her lips, rubbing his thumb over them when they had parted. "When did you find out?"

"This morning. I went to my 'lady-doctor', as you guys like to call it, to refill my prescription for my contraceptive but before they dispense it, they have to run a pregnancy test. It was positive. They asked me probably a million questions and I realized that my monthly hadn't come in a while. I guess with how busy I've been, I didn't notice."

"Are you scared?" he asked and she nodded.

"Terrified. I'm barely twenty-one! I'm hardly ready to be a mother. I'm working on getting a degree and I honestly didn't think you'd be happy in the slightest. I thought you'd want me not to have it and the more I thought about it, the more upset I got. I couldn't hold it together and it just all came out. You comfort me, Lindsey, you always make me feel better so I called you. Then I realized you were the one I was afraid to tell and--"

Lindsey listened for long enough, giving her another kiss to quiet her nervous rambling. "I get it. Don't be scared and definitely don't be scared to tell me anything. Like I said, I'm not going anywhere and I will take care of you and our baby. I promise."

"You will? I mean, you really want that?"

"More than anything. Do your parents know?"

"I bit the bullet after my doctor's appointment. My mother called when I got back here to see how everything went and I just spilled. They're disappointed but they said they can't tell me what to do, I'm an adult."

"Your parents are so progressive, Steves. No wonder you're a hippie!" he teased and she giggled, swatting at him.

"That's not very nice! I am so not a hippie!"

"You are but that's okay. Your free spirit is one of the many reasons why I love you."

"You're too good to me"

"You deserve it, honey. I have an idea. Why don't we get some rest then tomorrow we can go out and celebrate the good news?"

"That sounds wonderful." Stevie wraps her arms around him, laying her head against his chest. "You make me so happy, Linds."

"You make me happy too. Not only do I have the most beautiful girlfriend in the entire world, now I'm going to have the most beautiful child." She smiled up at him, gripping him tighter. After a while of silence, he decided to strip down for bed. She watched him as if he were some magical creature, her eyes following him everywhere, a new light behind them he had never seen before. He lowered himself onto her bed and she instantly cuddled up to him. He kissed her hair, whispering 'I love you's as she fell into a peaceful sleep.

A/N: I intended for this to be a short story so it's coming close to the end. Still, I couldn't resist a B/N baby. Haha
