Understanding
Ok I changed my mind on what I wanted to happen so basically I've changed one thing in the previous chapter so nothing drastic :) and I'm sorry for not uploading in forever but I don't have a schedule, I wouldn't be able to stick to one anyway oops but hope this makes up for it? Sorry again!
Pete's POV
The waitress brings my cup over with a smile. It warms my hands up immediately and soothes my nerves a little. Condensation mists up the windows showing pictures that others, presumably children, have drawn which range from smiley faces to Christmas Trees to broken hearts to the classic dick. Cute. Each time the bell rings signaling a new customer, it makes my heart jolt. We both decided that today was the best day to meet but I'm terrified. I don't really know what to say or how he's going to feel.
The bell rings again and I can already hear the church bells. Today could be my funeral. Mikey enters the coffee shop and looks around for me. I lift my hand up and wave him over. The blonde walks over and sits down opposite me. "Hi."
"Hi." I reply.
"So...how've you been?"
"Good. How about you?"
"Good, tired though. Frank's been keeping me up a little bit."
"Oh."
"Yeah." Silence settles over us like a blanket and I sip my coffee. A waitress brings over Mikey's and we both sip our drinks. "Why did you ask me to meet you?" Mikey asks. "I wanted to talk to you. I feel like I owe you an explanation." Mikey nods and moves his hand as if asking me to carry on.
"So when I was younger I got involved with the wrong people and slept and partied with the wrong people. The people who hired me were once my friends. Now they've been locked up and they won't bother us again." I refrain from telling him about Bert. He might bother us but if he hurts Mikey I'll kill him. Something I should've done a long time ago.
"I knew so many people there Pete." The man opposite me looks close to tears. "I lost so many. I lost people I was close to. People I loved." A stray tear fell and rolled down his pale skin, landing with a splash on the table. He has a far away look in his eyes as he stares out the window. "What were their names?" I ask timidly. "I'd rather not say." He whispers. Silence falls again. Mikey regains his composure and smiles at me. "Is that it?" I shake my head.
"No, I wondered if you wanted to go on a date with me."
"That depends."
"On what?"
"What did you have in mind?" I panic a bit, I don't have anything planned. "Pizza, coffee and a movie at mine?" The blonde grins. "Sounds like a plan."
Time skip
Laughing we arrive at my apartment. Fumbling for the keys my fingers shaking, I manage to get the door open. "Do you want to call the pizza place and I'll find a movie?"
"Sure."
"There's loads of leaflets in the shit pile over there. You'll find one." I point to the mound of paper in the corner. Mikey's eyes widen but he smiles nontheless. I turn back to my limited selection of movies. "How about The Nightmares Before Christmas?" I call over my shoulder. No response. "Mikey?" Movie in hand I wander back towards where I last saw him and see him on the phone. He shoots me a thumbs up and goes back to ordering.
While he's on the phone I turn my attention to the DVD player. I hit a few buttons and nothing happens. "Are you ok?" Mikey asks which makes me jump. "Uh I'm confuzzled." I hit the box again and again and still nothing happens. "Fucking work you cheap piece of shit! I will fucking break you nasty ass motherfucker!"
"Yes you will, chill and take a step back." I stand up and pout. "It won't work."
"I can tell." Mikey says with a laugh. He nudges me out of the way and bends over to turn it on. "...the DVD?"
"Huh?" I look away from his ass. "I said can you pass me the DVD?"
"Sure." I hand it him with a smirk. Someone knocks on the door. "Ooh that's the pizza!" Mikey says excitedly. "Already?" I'm surprised. "Yeah, I called the one like five minutes down the street."
"There's one down the street?" My voice rises in suprise. "Did you just get kicked in the balls or some shit?" I frown and fold my arms. "Yes there is one down the street. You should go outside more."
"What's the outside?"
"It's out your apartment, you know what we were in when we were in the coffee shop and in the open air."
"Ew why would I want to do that?" I flop onto the sofa, confused. "Because it's good for you! Anyway I thought you were getting the pizza?"
"You ordered it."
"You're paying."
"What makes you think that?"
"You invited me on this date."
"Fair enough." I hold out my arms and make grabby hands. He helps me up and drags me up. I grab my wallet off the coffee table and hand it to Mikey once he's opened the door. He -or I- pays for the pizza and then closes the door. "I got the DVD player working, want to watch that movie now?" I nod.
"One second." I go to the kitchen and grab a bottle of wine and two glasses. "Drink?" I stand in the doorway with a raised eyebrow. "Are you trying to get me drunk?' I shrug. "Sure why not."
After the movie, a box of pizza and a bottle or wine a lull falls over the apartment as we cuddle under a blanket on the sofa. "Do you trust me?" Mikey looks up at me and shrugs. "Yeah, I do." He replies. "Why? I killed people. People you probably knew."
"I understand why you did. You didn't have a choice and you did your time." I pull him closer to me. "They hurt me you know," I wasn't sure if I was going to tell him but why not? "They put me through Hell. Said it was helping me but it broke me more. They didn't fix me, they changed me. Electrotherapy I think it was. I have more breakdowns now. Flashbacks. Anything can trigger it."
Mikey squeezes my hand. "You asked me who they were." He says.
"Hmm?"
"Earlier you asked me what their names were." He takes a deep breath before continuing. "I was so close to them. I knew most of them for so long."
"Who were they?"
"Awsten, Geoff, Ray and-" A cry erupts from his mouth, cutting him off. He starts to shake as sobs rack his body. My hands start to shake. I remember them. I remember their blood spurting out of deep bullet wounds and slashes from knives. I remember their pleas.
Flashback
"Please, please. Don't hurt him. Do anything you want to me but don't hurt him." Red coats his blue hair and panic floods his eyes. His brunette boyfriend cowers in the corner. I raise my gun, hand completely steady. I pull the trigger. Awsten throws himself in front of the silver. It hits him right between his eyes. Scarlet trickles down his terrified face, frozen in time.
Geoff screams and scampers to his lover but his cries are soon cut short too. Someone behind me gasps. I turn and squeeze the trigger five times, each time hitting the target. The tall man falls to the floor, crimson covering his fro. He was a ray of sunlight and I dulled his shine. I scoff and step over his body and out the door into the corpse covered corridor.
Two men huddle together at the end. One red haired and one blonde, both still alive. For now.
Flashback over
Mikey continues to cry into my shoulder and his volume and moves disguise my shoulders and tears. "I'm sorry Pete. I have to go." He tears himself away and sprints out the apartment, the door wide open, leaving me cold, empty and alone. I did that. I hurt him. I deserve everything that's happened to me. Everything.
A voice from the doorway brings me back to reality. "It seems I've found you again. You won't be escaping this time."
