Chapter 21 | Banshee Talk
Stiles POV
As I listened to Sarah ramble in my jeep on the way to the station, my mind wasn't fully listening to her. I was too caught up in remembering what her mother had said; which happened to be the exact same thing I had read on the internet that night. I thought it was just some dumb article, but her mother said that there is actually a legend, and that only made me all the more terrified.
I refused to believe it; I didn't want to imagine where I might be in a couple of weeks; let alone a few days. Like her mother had stated, I was changing. I was getting stronger, faster, better. I didn't notice it too much at first, but that was before everyone started to compliment me at lacrosse practice, and that usually doesn't happen very often. Scott had noticed it too, and he even pulled me aside to ask me what's been going on lately. I only replied to him that I've been eating my vitamins.
But now that Sarah knows what's happening and that her own mother believes this story, it started to seem more real. Everything so far has happened, and I hoped that that was just a coincidence. If the end of that story does come true...I hope that someone stops me before I'm able to do anything. I couldn't imagine if I ever hurt Sarah.
Sarah looked like this wasn't the first time she's seen my eyes glow, and it wasn't my first time either. I mean, the first time I saw it was after getting out of the shower before school about two weeks ago. I was rubbing my face off on the towel before looking up in the mirror, seeing them flash orange for a brief second. I had to blink rapidly after I saw this, because I wasn't sure if it was real or if I was just imaging it. I ended up shrugging it off, and now I wish that I hadn't.
My guess is that Sarah and her mother's argument is what triggered it this time. My heart had sped up listening to them two fight, which probably caused my eyes to glow, and that wasn't a good thing at all. If something like that can trigger it, what if something worse happens? What if it happens at the wrong time? What if I can't control it?
"Stiles!" I hear Sarah yell, causing me to snap from my daze. My eyes dart over to her confused face as she stares at me, my knuckles turning white as I gripped the steering wheel. "Are you alright?"
I nod my head as I loosen my grip, trying to act calm when in reality, I was far from it. "Y-Yeah I'm fine. What were you saying?"
Sarah takes a deep breath. "I was talking about you; about that story."
"There's nothing much to talk about," I say, my eyes fixing back on the road. "There's not much we can do about it."
She scoffs as she raises her eyebrow. "Nothing we can do about it? Stiles--there's always something we can do. And I'm going to figure out how to fix it."
"We don't even know if it's true," I say, trying to be as optimistic as possible. "Some 40 year old creep in a basement could have wrote that."
She shakes her head as I take a left turn. "The article could be, but that story, Stiles...it was like it was made hundreds of years ago. There has to be some type of significance about it."
"Sarah," I say softly as I reach across and grab her hand, trying to calm her down. "Don't stress yourself out about it, okay? We have more important things to worry about right now."
"You're more important," she says, causing my eyes to turn and scan her face. Something on her face showed how terrified she was after learning about this, but she was strong. I knew she would be okay.
Even if that meant doing what's right in the end.
-----------
Sarah's POV
I wanted nothing more than to go home and just research all that I could about this article and story. I wanted to figure out what exactly happens and to find loopholes; since I knew that there had to be one somewhere. There's always a way to undo things, right? Same goes for this.
We were at the Sheriff's station now, standing in a room with the new deputy. Lydia was with us now, and she has yet to know about that little coffee date we had just had a few minutes ago. I didn't necessary want to tell her what happened, since I didn't want her to worry. But I knew her and the others deserved to know; so they could help us.
"I ran a bunch of these names through the system, but I couldn't find anything," Parrish says, skimming over the deadpool list Lydia had handed him. However, she had folded it so that he couldn't see his own name at the bottom. "What do you need exactly?"
"It's not what we need," Lydia says causually as she grabs the slip of paper and turns it to the other side, revealing his name.
"Woah," he says as he instantly perks up, his eyes widening. He clearly was shocked to see his name on a hit list. "Why is my name on here? I haven't done anything."
I lick my lips. "We aren't sure, but we were wondering if maybe you had an idea; if anyone wanted you dead for any reason."
"No I don't have any idea," Parrish says as he turns his back towards us. "What's this number next to my name?"
Stiles raises his eyebrows. "We believe that it's the amount that you're worth."
Parrish turns and looks at us with his jaw dropped. "I'm only worth five dollars?"
"Try five million," I say as Stiles holds out five fingers. Parrish shakes his head as he looks back down at the paper, still stunned to see his name on the list.
"I only make forty-thousand a year..." he fades out. "Maybe I should just kill myself."
Lydia takes a step forwards as she offers him comfort. "We're going to figure out who The Benefactor is, and we're going to make sure they get what they deserve."
"Bad part is that we don't even have any leads," Parrish says, causing my hope to dim. "I just don't understand why someone would want all of these kids and people dead."
Stiles lets out an exhausted sigh. "At least the whole town isn't on there."
"There's still another list, right?" Parrish asks once again.
I nod my head. "Yeah, which is another thing we wanted to talk to you about..."
"If this involves Meredith, then no," he says while placing the paper on his desk. "You guys scared her enough last time."
I force a smile onto my face. "That's because I wasn't there to help."
"We need her, Parrish," Lydia begs as he starts to walk out of the office. "Do you want another whole list of people to die?"
Parrish turns around and looks at her then, along with his eyes flicking to a puppy eyed Stiles and I. He finally sighs before grabbing a set of keys, nodding towards the door. "Come on, let's go."
--------
"I've never met Meredith before," I whisper to Stiles as we walk down the Eichen House halls, bringing back too many terrible memories. All I could remember was that this was the place where it all had started; where the nogitsune had first gotten to me.
"She's a little...um..." Stiles says, but can't find the right words. "She's a banshee like Lydia, but she's been one longer. You have to be careful what you say around her, mostly because last time she almost had a nervous breakdown."
I stare into one of the cells as I nod towards Stiles. "How did she end up here?"
"All of her family is dead," Stiles fades out. "And I'm sure after you meet her you'll understand why."
We stop in the hall as one of the orderlies pulls out their keys, about to unlock the door to Meredeths room. We all wait patiently before someone yells down the hall,"What the hell are you doing?"
All of our heads flick towards the voice, myself already knowing who it was. It was no one other than satan himself; Brunski. He marches towards us as he glares at Stiles and I, ripping the keys from the man in front of us while harshly whispering,"You don't just do anything for someone in a badge!"
"We need to talk to Meredith about an ongoing murder investigation," Parrish says as formal as possible, and I gave him props to that.
Brunski turns and glares at us as the other man walks away down the hall. "Well well, look who it is. We've got the boy who still needs to pay his bills and the rich girl who won't pay them for him. I see you two are a lovely couple now?"
I glance down at Stiles' and my clasped hands, but we didn't even flinch. I look up and glare at Brunski as he smirks at the two of us. "We need to see Meredith."
"Deputy Parrish here can go inside all he wants," he mocks as he points to the three of us. "But you three need to leave."
"They're eye witnesses," Parrish says once again.
Brunski raises his eyebrows in a rude and mockery type of manor. "Then come back with a court order, along with your money, Stilinski. Funny how Public jobs don't pay people as much as they used to."
"But they are useful when you need a favor; like last month when Canaan PD helped you get home after blowing a 0.1 on a Breathalyzer," Parrish says with a small smirk, causing all of us to giggle to ourselves. Stiles makes an O with his mouth as Brunski's smile is wiped clean off of his face.
He laughs slightly before opening the door for us, letting us inside. "You get fifteen minutes."
Lydia smiles widely at him as she walks into the room. "That's all we'll need."
I hear Brunski growl under his breath as we all walk into the room, my eyes scanning it before landing on a small petite girl sitting on the left bed. She was sitting there on the edge like she was sitting in a chair; her hands on her lap and her back straight. She was staring at the ground at first, but after we walked in, she looked up and her eyes went straight to Lydia.
"Hi Meredith," Lydia says as if she's talking to a puppy. "How are you?"
"You want the third code, don't you?" Meredith asks, getting straight to the point. Lydia glances over at me as I shrug my shoulders, not really sure what to say. This was banshee talk, and I sure wasn't a banshee.
Lydia takes a deep breath. "Yeah. If you could just give it to me as a code or a phone number-"
"No," Meredith says firmly, not changing her mind.
We all exchange glances as I step forwards. "Why not?"
"Because he told me not to," she says while shaking her head slightly.
Stiles looks down at me before back at her. "Who told you not to?"
"The Benefactor."
A chill runs down my spine as Lydia looks back at us, her eyebrows furrowed. You could tell how frustrated and confused she was, but she managed to turn that into curiosity. She slowly looks back at Meredith as she plays with a lose thread on her sweatpants, not paying much attention.
"Who's The Benefactor?" Lydia asks softly, still patient.
She looks up then, shaking her head. "I'm not supposed to say."
"We need a name," I say to her, already starting to want to pull it out of her. I didn't want to cause her to have a nervous breakdown, but we needed answers. "People are dying, Merideth."
She looks up quickly as she scans my face, cocking her head slightly. "I know you."
"What?" I ask, confused. I knew for a fact that I didn't know her.
She nods her head. "I know you. You're Sarah Manchester; the girl on fire."
I laugh nervously, almost forgetting that Parrish was still in the room. "Girl on fire? What is that supposed to mean?"
"You know what it means," she says, her eyes finally drifting away from me. Stiles' amber eyes stare at me in confusion as I shrug my shoulders, not exactly sure what she was meaning by that. I understood the girl on fire part, but how does she know me?
"Meredith, we need that key," Lydia says once again, getting back onto topic.
She shakes her head. "Things have changed; you can't have it."
"Then give me The Benefactors name," Lydia says, her voice rising.
Meredith's eyes start to widen in fright, and I knew that this was too much for her. "I can't. I can't give you his name-"
"Tell me!" Lydia yells this time. "Concentrate!"
"Lydia-"
"I don't know!" Meredith yells, but then she screams. "I don't know!"
I press the palms of my hands to my ears as I try to drown out the terrible sound, but it managed to still ring in my ears. Maybe because it was the scream of a banshee, but either way, it hurt my ear drums. It took a minute before she finally stops, curling her legs up to her chest and backing up farther on her bed. I glance over at Lydia when I see that her ears were bleeding.
Parrish walks over to Lydia as he scans the blood dripping down from her ears, but he doesn't say anything about it. Instead he turns and glances at Meredith before nodding towards the door. "Come on guys, that's enough."
We all take one last glance at Meredith before we begin to walk out, me being the last person. I was about to take a step out of the room before I heard Meredith whispering to herself, making my blood run cold.
"Hi no shōjo. Hi no shōjo."
---------
Creeeeeeeepy. Meredith has always creeped me out tbh. I wanna know what happened to her though; is she still in Eichen House or did she go somewhere else? The world may never know...
