Chapter 20 | Coffee Date
Sarah's POV
"You can get your gear later guys," Coach yells at the team as they try to get into the locker room. "And if anyone sees Garret, report him to the police, and then tell him he's off the damn team."
I stand there quietly as I watch the police walk in and out of the locker room, trying to figure out exactly what was going on. Stiles' dad was here of course; already knowing what had actually happened here. I had told him along with Scott and Stiles what had happened, and they seemed to understand. The Sheriff had been a little hesitant for some reason, but he covered for me.
Kira had gone home with her mother, since her name was on the second list as well. My mother's name has yet to be on the list, along with my own, but I didn't worry about it too much. I knew that it had to be there, and I knew that we were more than likely worth a decent amount. My mother could protect herself I was sure of, along with myself. I was only worried about how it would effect Stiles; which meant that I needed to stay safe at all times, for his sake.
Speaking of Stiles, he was still here as well, running around and trying to gather up every piece of evidence he could get his hands on. He's always been that way. He always has to put the pieces together before anyone else can get hurt, which wasn't a bad quality to have. He really was just like his father.
Scott was over in the other hallway talking to his father, but I didn't listen in on their conversation much. All I heard was his dad apologizing for not being at the game, but after that, I just zoned out. All I could think about was what had happened; that Brett was a wolf and almost had died, that Violet was an assassin, and I had lost it yet again. It might have something to do with Stiles and I, but I wasn't sure. Either way, I could have killed her tonight.
My eyes flash up when I see Stiles come back over to me, his hair lying down on his forehead from his sweat and helmet. "Are you sure you're okay?"
"I'm sure, Stiles," I say for the thousandth time. "I'm not the one who got hurt tonight."
Stiles sighs. "It wasn't your fault, Sarah. You saved Brett and quite possibly saved yourself and a lot of others. According to my dad, she's killed a lot of people."
I raise my eyebrows. "What do you mean she's killed a lot of people?"
"Her and Garret are known as the Orphans," Stiles says as he glances over his shoulder at his father. "They're professional assassins that got the deadpool list, which is why they're in Beacon Hills."
I run my fingers through my hair. "Well, that's just great. I guess now we'll have to look out for her boyfriend. No one has seen him since the game?"
"Nope," Stiles sighs once again. "But Derek took Brett to the Vet Clinic since he was poisoned by that wolfsbane."
"I hope he'll be okay," I say, my voice fading out. "You should have seen it, Stiles. She was about to slice his head clean off."
Stiles shakes his head as he twiddles his thumbs, knowing how it made me feel to see stuff like that. "He'll be fine, I know he will. We need to worry about ourselves now though, along with figuring out the last password to that list. Your name isn't on it-"
"Yet," I say, already knowing what he was going to say. "We all know that I'm going to be on it next, along with Malia and Liam. Not to mention my mother..."
"And we'll protect you guys," Stiles assures me as he takes my hands.
I shake my head. "I'm not worried about me, but I'm worried about what ever happens to me will happen to you."
Stiles licks his lips. "We'll be fine, Sarah. Stop worrying."
I take a deep breath before I see movement behind Stiles, causing me to look up and see that the police were escorting Violet out of the locker room. My eyes widen when I see the burn marks I had left around her neck; ones that the Sheriff had covered up for me by saying that Brett must have used self defense. Violet scowls as she stares at the floor, but that was before she looks up and sees me.
They begin to walk past Stiles and I before Violet struggles in the officers grasp, leaning towards me so that she can say something to only Stiles and I. "I know what you really are, Sarah, and I know that you're worth a lot of money. Same with your little boyfriend right there. You think you've won, but trust me, you've only made us pissed off. You think a thermo cut wire is bad, wait until you see what Garret can do-"
"Move along!" the officer screams at Violet, causing her to stumble forwards. Stiles narrows his eyes as he watches Violet walk down the hall and out of sight, myself only wishing that I wouldn't see her again anytime soon. Her words didn't scare me; but it made me wonder. She said that Stiles was worth a lot of money...
"Let's get out of here," Stiles says to me as he grabs my hand, beginning to tug me along. I didn't mind it; I wanted to get the hell out of here. I was tired of being in school enough as it was.
Plus I needed some damn sleep.
--------
"Wake up, Sarah."
My eyes begin to slowly open as I'm met with Stiles' grinning face, causing me to furrow my eyebrows. I don't get to ask any questions before he's pressing his lips to my own, causing me to pull away quickly. Morning kisses have never exactly been my thing.
"I haven't even brushed my teeth yet!" I squeal at Stiles as I start to sit up, but instead he just tackles me back onto the bed, landing on top of me. I'm confused by the way he was acting, but I wasn't complaining. It was cute as hell.
"Does it look like I care what your breath smells like?" Stiles says with a raised eyebrow.
I roll my eyes. "Well, I care, thank you very much. What's up with you anyways?"
Stiles smiles once again as he crawls up off of me, finally allowing me to sit up in his bed. "Well, I thought that since you had a rough night last night, I would make it up to you by taking you out for morning coffee?"
I purse my lips as my face grows hot. "You don't have to Stiles-"
"I want to," he says. "Besides, we need to do something to pass the time, since we're meeting up with Lydia at ten."
My eyes flick to Stiles' alarm clock, which read eight a.m. "Stiles! We have school-"
"Not today we don't," he smiles, the sunlight shining through his window just right. "I called your mom and told her that you weren't feeling good."
I raise my eyebrows. "You just lied to Vanessa?"
"It's not technically lying," Stiles shrugs slightly. "Let's just call it...needing a day off."
I laugh at the idiot in front of me before I go back to the topic of Lydia. "Why are we meeting up with Lydia exactly?"
Stiles shoves his hands into his sweatpant pockets as his smile fades. "Well, she's a banshee, and we need to figure out that last password, along with talking to someone else who was on the list..."
"Who?" I ask, not remembering hearing about any weird names on the list.
Stiles is quiet for a moment before he licks his lips. "Parrish was on it."
"The deputy?" I say, my eyes widening. "He's something supernatural?"
Stiles sighs. "Honestly, who isn't at this point?"
"I would say you, but I guess you're not classified as fully normal," I say while raising my eyebrows. "And no, I don't mean by our linkage."
Stiles scoffs. "That was rude for someone who's taking you to get coffee."
"I'm just kidding," I say while grinning as wide as I possibly could, making it look super cheesy.
Stiles laughs at me as he turns around and begins to go through his drawers. "Go brush your teeth so I can kiss you again."
I smirk as I bounce off of the bed, practically running to Stiles' bathroom. "Don't have to tell me twice."
This isn't the first time I've stayed over at Stiles' house, meaning that I technically live here if you want to put it that way. I've got all of my essentials over here; things like a set of clothes, my hairbrush, toothbrush and toothpaste, along with some of my make-up and other girl items. It didn't bother Vanessa and Zach I supposed; well, I never really ask them anyways. Honestly, I haven't really talked to them very much in the past couple of days. Just simple conversations, but nothing like how it used to be. I guess that's what happens when you're possessed by a dark spirit and are dead for a week.
It doesn't take me long before I'm fully dressed and ready to walk out of the door; wearing a pair of holy light washed jeans and a light pink T-Shirt. I slip on the shoes I had been wearing last night before I grab the hoodie I had stashed away with the rest of my stuff (which was Stiles'). His hoodie was a lighter blue with white strings, it being a little bit bigger on me, but I didn't mind. It smelled just like him.
"Is that my-" Stiles starts to say before I cut him off.
"Let's get going," I smile as I practically run out of the door, not wanting to tell him that I had hid his hoodie all of this time. I don't think he'd mind, but with me being me, I wanted to just make him aggravated.
Stiles and I have a simple conversation on the way to the coffee shop; which was a little starbucks in the middle of town. It wasn't too far away from the school, but it was closer to the Sheriff's department more than anything. I've only been there twice; those two times being on the way to school.
Stiles and I get out of the jeep as we walk up the coffee shop, myself noticing that there weren't very many people here. After all, everyone was in school, so that might be the reason why. It might look suspicious that we were here and not in school, but I doubt they'd say anything. If they did, I guess I'll just have to show them what I can do. I bet that'll shut them up.
"What kind of coffee do you like anyways?" Stiles asks as he opens the door for me, a little bell ringing as he had done so.
I scan the menu above the counter as I take a step inside. "I usually get a caramel frappachino, but I think I'll try something a little different today."
"I think I'll just get hot chocolate," Stiles hums as the door shuts behind us. I nod my head as I scan the menu, still not really sure what I wanted. The white chocolate mocha sounded good, along with the pumpkin spice latte. This is going to be a tough decision.
My eyes trail away from the menu as I look around the little shop, scanning the people to see if I knew anyone. There was a college girl sitting in one of the corners on her laptop, another couple sitting at a table laughing, and then there was a taller looking boy sitting at another table by himself. He seemed to be fixed in on his phone before he looks up and sees Stiles and I, almost looking interested to see us. He quickly looks back down at his phone when he makes eye contact with me, trying to act as if nothing had just happened. Weird.
I didn't have much time to think about it much before I looked farther around the corner of the coffee shop, my stomach knotting when I had seen who was sitting there. With a coffee and laptop on the tabletop, my mother was sitting at a little round table by her lonesome. She doesn't notice us at first, but she then looks up, a huge grin forming on her face.
I try my best not to make eye contact with her as I turn and look back at Stiles, who had missed the whole scene. It wasn't that I didn't mind my mother, but I was with Stiles, and I just wanted it to be us two right now. Looks like that's not happening.
"Sarah!" my mother says as I hear her stand up, walking over to Stiles and I. Could things possibly get worst?
I force a smile onto my face as I turn and look at her. "Hey."
"Who is this?" Stiles whispers to me, which was the first time I realized that he's never even seen my mother. Things just got a lot weirder.
I gulp. "This is my mom."
"Oh," Stiles says as his eyes widen slightly, but he soon extends his hand in offer for a handshake. "Nice to meet you finally."
My mother stares at his hand for a moment before taking it and shaking it firmly. "It's nice to finally meet you too, Stiles. What are you guys doing here? Shouldn't you be in school?"
"We're trying to focus on figuring out the last password to the hit list," I say quietly.
My mother nods her head, licking her lips slightly. "Where's your banshee friend then?"
"She's coming soon," Stiles says before glancing back at me, not really sure what to say to her.
She nods her head before she nods back towards her table. "After you order, can you both come sit with me for a moment? I have to tell you both a few things."
I raise an eyebrow, wondering what she would have to tell Stiles and I both. "Um, okay."
"Trust me, it's important," she says before turning and walking off, leaving Stiles and I standing here alone again. Stiles gives me a look of confusion, but I just stared at him back the same way. How was I supposed to know what my mother wanted?
It doesn't take us long before we get our orders. I decided to just stick with what I usually get while Stiles got that hot chocolate he had said he had wanted. I had payed for both of our orders, only because I remembered Stiles telling me about their money problem. Besides, there wasn't any reason why I couldn't pay. The boyfriend in the relationship doesn't always have to.
I scan the boy from earlier as I walk over to my mother, noticing little features about him. He had a sharp jawline, a skinnier face, and a couple of freckles here and there. Honestly, he was pretty attractive; but I mean, I have a boyfriend of course, and the guy looked older than me. I wasn't sure by how much, but it didn't matter. I just wondered why he had looked at me like that earlier...
Stiles takes a sip of his hot chocolate as we sit down across from my mother, her table being pretty much away from the rest of the other people. We could surely talk with ease and not worry about anyone hearing us; unless of course they were supernatural.
"What do you want to tell us?" I ask her as I fold my hands on the table, scanning her face as her eyes were fixed on the laptop in front of her. She's quiet for a little while before she flips the laptop around to face Stiles and I both; the picture on the screen scaring me a little.
It was definitely a photo from a long time ago; almost even hundreds of years ago. There was a drawing of a woman in it, the girl being on her knees. It took me a moment to realize that there were nine tails behind her; meaning that she must be a kitsune. Standing behind her was a man--slicing a knife across her throat. The scene was ugly, and it chilled me to the core.
"What is that?" I ask my mother as I glance over at Stiles, who's face was white as snow.
My mother points to the screen. "This is a legend that dates back to kitsune mythology, which is what I had found when I had researched you and Stiles being connected."
"I don't think I'm going to like where this is going..." I drift off as my mother flips the laptop back around, scrolling upwards.
"No, you aren't if it's true," she says before reading off of the screen. "I had looked until I found this article titled The Fox and the Demon, which then led me to this myth. The beginning of it sounded exactly like what happened to the two of you."
"Please tell me it has a good ending," I say as my mother is silent.
She shakes her head before she shuts her laptop, staring at Stiles and I with deep concern. "The beginning of the myth basically states exactly what happened to you both. Being possessed, dying, being brought back from the dead; all of it. It then goes on to say that bringing you back from the dead upsets the balance of the supernatural world, which is where Stiles comes into play. He wasn't just brought back from the dead, but he was brought back to complete a specific task. It first starts off as you two being bonded, which takes time before Stiles eventually possesses the same powers and talents of you, Sarah. The myth states that after a certain amount of time, if the task isn't done, then Stiles will be forced to complete it-"
"What task are you talking about?" I say as I furrow my eyebrows, confused as to what she was exactly telling me. I understood, but it was a lot to take in at one time.
My mother takes a deep breath. "Stiles was brought back to kill you, Sarah. It's what he's meant to do."
My jaw opens slightly as I stare at her wide eyed, angry that she could make an accusation like this. "You're even crazier than I thought you were."
"What?" my mother says as her tone rises. "Crazy? I'm speaking what the myth says is going to happen."
I shake my head as my hands grow hot. "Myth? You're just going to believe what some random article on the internet tells you?"
"This has happened before, Sarah," my mother says with an angry expression. "If you think I'm pulling this out of thin air, I'm not. I'm just trying to protect you both-"
"You're basically telling me that Stiles is the problem," I fume, Stiles sitting there in complete silence and confusion.
My mother narrows her eyes. "Yeah--he is the problem. He could turn on you and kill you at any second-"
"What should we do then, huh?" I say as I stand up, shaking my head at her. "You think we should just kill him then? Is that what you think?"
"No!" she says, but I don't believe her. "I'm saying that maybe staying away from him wouldn't be such a bad idea."
I scoff as Stiles' heart beat rises. "There is a hit list with our names on it, meaning that no way in hell am I going to let him out of my sight. Besides, why would I believe what some article tells me on the internet."
"Tell me you haven't noticed things then!" she practically yells. "Tell me that you haven't noticed things different about Stiles. Tell me that you haven't noticed him getting stronger, healing faster, and becoming more like you every day."
I start to disagree with her, but then I stop short. After hearing her say this, it did make sense. Stiles has gotten unusually good at lacrosse lately, along with healing faster like when Kate had hurt me a couple of weeks ago. Not to mention his eyes changing color...but I wasn't going to admit that to my mother.
"I'm not staying away from Stiles," I grit as my mother practically snarls at me, but that was before her eyes fix on Stiles.
"Still don't believe me?" she says as she stares at Stiles. She grabs her laptop and begins to walk away from the table as I look down at Stiles, his eyes glowing orange like they had before. This time it lasted longer; and it wasn't in the blink of an eye. He stares at me with confusion as I hear the bell ding, my mother leaving the coffee shop without another word.
This is why you don't have coffee dates with your mother and boyfriend.
---------
Welp...looks like Sarah knows what's destined to happen. But who knows, maybe things will go a little off course (;
I love to torture you all, I'm sorry. I just love this book and you all too much so please don't hate me, haha.
