Chapter Twenty-Nine: The Dulled Star and His Light
"Weiss! Weiss!!!"
Jason felt as if his heart were beating out of his chest as he ran down the snow covered road, taking heavy breaths as panic began to set in his mind. The jade-colored scarf around his neck flapped in the wind behind him.
He had heard the tires, and he had heard the scream. He heard Weiss' scream.
She's okay... She's okay...! She's got to be! Jason thought worriedly. Maybe the car surprised her! Maybe she fell or something!
Despite his hopeful thinking, Jason still pelted down the street, trying not to slip on the icy road and ignoring the snowfall. As he passed the bench where he and Weiss had been sitting only moments before, Jason could hear panicked voices from nearby, and he ran towards them, his eyes wide in fear.
As he rounded the street corner, Jason skidded to a halt. A mini-van was parked in the middle of the road, blocking Jason's view of the street. Slowly stepping around the van, Jason saw two people, a man and a woman, looking worriedly at something lying in the street, and Jason realized that they must have been the two people that he had heard talking from down the street. As Jason stepped closer to the front of the car, the woman turned her head, letting out a small gasp of surprise when she noticed him.
Jason spoke, in a timid voice, "Excuse me, have you seen my friend around here anywhere? She's got blonde hair, a green... shirt..."
Jason's voice trailed off as the woman slapped a hand over her mouth, her eyes wide and tears forming in her eyes. Jason felt a twisting feeling in his gut at the expression on her face. Breaking eye contact with her, Jason stepped around her and continued onward, the woman making no attempt to stop him.
She's okay...She's got to be...
Jason's mouth fell open as he saw that some of the snow behind the woman was splattered a red color, and his gaze followed the red snow, the red becoming more frequent and darker until...
Jason's eyes widened, and he froze up as he saw what was lying in the middle of the street, a look of disbelief on his face. No way... No way!
But as much as Jason tried to deny it, there was no changing the fact that what lay in the middle of the street was his best friend's body.
Weiss was flat on her back, her body still. There was a thin trail of blood coming from her mouth, and her neck was wrenched to the side, clearly broken. The snow around her leg was stained with blood, blood seeping out of one of her legs, which was twisted at an abnormal angle, with a bone sticking out of the side, causing the steady blood flow. Her glazed-over eyes and mouth were open wide, as if recreating a final look of fear on her face.
"Weiss...?" Jason whimpered, and unable to register the mangled body of his friend, he fell to his knees, his arms falling limp next to him as tears began to fall down his face.
You can't be dead! Please Weiss, tell me you aren't dead! Not now! I didn't even get a chance to...!
I shouldn't have let you leave in this snowstorm all by yourself! This is... This is my fault!
Jason's body shook as sobs wracked his body, ignoring the voices of the man and woman behind him. Jason rose a hand and grabbed the scarf tightly around his neck, before lifting his head in a long wail of anguish.

"Remember meeeeee for centurieeeeeees! WEEEEEEEEEEEEEE- oof!"
Jason laughed along with his other friends as Ty gave Adam a swift punch to the gut, cutting off Adam's screeching. Jason was on his knees helping to clean up coffee that had spilt on the floor after the "incident" only minutes before. It retrospect, it really was Ty's fault, seeing as he was the one that couldn't balance the coffee mugs. At least, this was how Jason defended his actions. Now he was stuck with Adam and Jerome cleaning up the mess, while Ty and Quentin watched.
Lucky Mitch... he got out just before Quentin had his little temper tantrum. I guess he probably took Ian with him. Lucky Ian. Jason thought, his laughing becoming quieter as his friends continued to laugh.
Jason suddenly froze, hearing a strange sound from outside. He could have sworn that it was a yell, but he wasn't so sure. Jason hushed the others, and they all fell silent, Jason waiting to see if he would hear the yell again. He looked around to see that his friends were all giving him weird looks, but Jason stayed quiet.
"If you're trying to tell a funny joke man," Quentin said sarcastically. "Then I hear crickets."
Jerome and Ty laughed with Quentin, a worried look on Adam's face, and Jason hushed them again, still waiting to hear the sound again. "No seriously, listen!"
As the other's fell silent once more, Jason could definite hear something outside, but Jason still couldn't tell what was happening. There was a yell from outside, and Jason was surprised to hear the sound of squealing tires as well.
"W-Was that Ian?" Jason heard Adam stutter as he pulled himself to his feet, taking slow and nervous steps towards the kitchen window, opening the curtain and looking outside.
At first he couldn't see anything wrong, but he then noticed a large truck parked in the middle of the street outside of their driveway, and he could see two people out in the street. One of which being Ian, who moved into a crouch over something in the street. Jason could hardly tell what Ian was leaning over, but he could recognize Mitch's checkered hoodie. Jason turned his attention back to the truck, and Jason's eyes widened, his face becoming pale as he saw what looked like blood splattered on the front of the truck.
Jason jumped back from the window, and he ran to the front door, throwing it open and quickly making his way to the street, hearing the sounds of his friends following behind him. No... Not again! Not again! Jason thought, before he came into full view of Ian and the truck.
Jason's gaze traveled to Mitch, whose body was lying still on the street, Jason's eyes widening at the sight of the pool of blood around his body. Jason noticed the many serious wounds on his body, but what caught his attention was his neck, which was bent in a strange angle, and slightly mangled. Jason knew that it was broken.
NO! This can't be happening! Jason thought, a look of horror on his face. The exact same way... Why is this happening??!
Jason's thoughts were interrupted by Quentin running up next to him. "Jason! What's with...you..."
Quentin's voice trailed off as he saw Mitch's body, his brown eyes wide in shock. "Mitch... Jason, call an ambulance! Quick!"
Nodding, Jason grabbed his phone from his pocket, quickly dialing in a number and calling an ambulance over to them as Quentin barked what to say into Jason's ear, and as Jason talked, he noticed Jerome run out of house, shouldering his way past Ty and Adam and make his way to the street. Jason wanted to yell for Jerome to stop before he saw Mitch's body, but it was already too late.
Jason saw a look of disbelief on Jerome's face as he saw the body, his eyes widening and tears beginning to fall down his cheeks. "NO!" Jerome yelled, his voice laced with emotion. Jerome fell to his knees, and Jason felt a wrenching feeling in his gut as Jerome shook Mitch's shoulder. Is this how I looked when...? Jason thought as he hung up the phone.
"The ambulance should be here soon." Jason said, addressing Quentin as well as Ty and Adam, who had joined them on the street. Both of them looked shocked, and Ty was crying. Adam placed a reassuring hand on Jerome's shoulder, a look of sadness in his eyes as well.
Jason was already all too familiar with this situation, and he couldn't help but remember his own reaction to finding Weiss's body as he watched Jerome sob over the body of his own best friend, Mitch.
Jason could see that Ian had a similar look on his face. His deep blue eyes wide and tearful as he took deep, shaky breaths, Ian obviously in some sort of shock. Jason could guess why as well. He had gone out to get food with Mitch, and Jason heard him yelling before he heard the squealing of the tires, and presumably before Mitch got hit. He did also see Ian by Mitch first. With all of that in mind, Jason could understand his friend's shock.
Because Ian watched Mitch die right in front of him.
Even Jason couldn't claim to have seen something as terrible as that.
Even though he had called the ambulance, Jason knew that it was hopeless. He had seen Mitch's neck, and Jason knew that he was probably dead within seconds when his neck snapped, if not seconds after. "I don't..." Jason said in a tearful voice, attracting Ty and Quentin's attention, "I don't think he'll make it. I think he's already..."
Ty stepped closer to Jason and socked him in the shoulder, hissing, "Don't say that yet!" into Jason's ear. Jason merely nodded in response, and he let his thoughts wander.
I can't believe... How could this have happened again?!? What did Mitch do to deserve this?!?
What did I do to deserve seeing this again?!?
Jason's thoughts were interrupted by Jerome letting out a long cry of anguish, calling out his best friend's name as everyone fell silent.

"Jason, there's a girl named Weiss Thompson at the door, and she wants to see you."
There was silence in the room, the five people in the hallway stared at Ty with shocked expressions.
Jason was silent, his icy blue eyes wide in surprise. "Weiss...?" He whispered, his legs feeling wobbly beneath him, perhaps from his shock.
Jason felt someone grabbing his arm and holding him up as Jason was about to fall over, and he turned to see that it was Mitch who had grabbed him. Mitch had a strange expression on his face, looking a mix of surprise, and to Jason's surprise, anger.
"Is that who Jerome told us about last night? The one who brought Mitch back to life?" Quentin asked, confused.
"The one from the dreams?" Adam asked, trying to keep the anger out of his voice from fighting Jason and Mitch.
"What?!?!?" Jason said, glaring up Mitch.
"Don't worry, only know about her involvement with me. Not you." Mitch whispered, before raising his voice to talk to Ty. "Was she blonde? Wearing winter type clothes?"
When Ty nodded, Jason let out a gasp, and he tried to run to the stairs, but Mitch held him back, much to Jason's protests. "Calm down!" Mitch yelled, his wings opening a bit behind him. "We'll go down together."
When Mitch didn't let go of Jason when he continued, Jason stopped, remembering Mitch telling him about his 'super-strength'. Jason slowly nodded, and Mitch let go of his arm. As Mitch and Jason began to head downstairs, Mitch nodded to Jerome, who nodded back and followed them downstairs. Adam and the others followed as well, but Jason didn't bother telling them to stay upstairs, knowing that they wouldn't listen. He would've asked Jerome to keep them up there, but after what Adam did to him in the hallway, and the cold look in Quentin's eyes, he was afraid to leave Jerome with them.
Jason clenched his fists, wincing as he felt a jolt of pain from his broken wrist. He had landed on it when Adam had dropped him, and now the numb pain was considerably more painful.
Reaching the bottom of the stairs, Jason noticed that he was shaking and he gripped Mitch's wrist, hoping that Mitch might help calm his nerves about seeing his best friend. Mitch looked reassuringly at him, but Jason could still see the anger in his eyes, even if it wasn't directed at Jason himself.
Jerome leaned between Mitch and Jason, whispering "Ships..." underneath his breath, trying to relieve some of the tension. Jason responded by dropping Mitch's wrist with an eye roll. Mitch responded by whacking Jerome in the face with his unbroken wing.
They finally entered the hallway leading to the door, Jason's eyes widened as he saw the figure standing in the doorway, unable to help the big smile creeping onto his face. "Weiss!" He cried, happiness in his voice as he ran towards her, breaking away from Mitch and Jerome.
"Jason!" Weiss yelled, tears welling up in her eyes as well. She had a golden light glowing around her, and Jason didn't see the look of dread on Mitch's face as he saw it.
Jason thought that it was beautiful.
But Mitch knew that it meant so much more.
As Jason and Weiss met in the middle of the hallway, Weiss wrapped her arms around Jason's neck, tears of happiness running down both her and Jason's faces as they embraced. Weiss dug her head into Jason's shoulder, both of them laughing.
"I've been looking so long for you!" Weiss cried happily, "I never gave up
"I've missed you so much!" Jason cried out as well, "I never broke my promise!"
And as both Jason and Weiss sunk to the ground, crying happily in each other's arms, nothing else seemed real.
In that moment, Jason had everything that he had ever wanted.
