Chapter Sixteen: Bonds Tied Beyond Death
It didn't take Ian long to realize that something was wrong with his two of friends.
The main sign was when he had called the others downstairs to eat breakfast. Jerome and Adam, as usual, were the first ones to get downstairs, and they immediately hounded Ian to give the two of them food. With a loud sigh, Ian slapped pancakes onto their plates, the two thanking him before sitting at the table. Quentin was the next to walk in, and the first thing he did was scold Jerome and Adam on how loud they were eating. He proceeded to get pancakes from Ian with a small "Thanks."
This was normal, but when Ty and Jason walked into the kitchen, Ian noticed that Jason was looking to the floor, a sad look on his face. Ty was giving his friend a look of concern as Ian gave Jason his food. Ian pulled Ty aside and whispered in his ear.
"Hey, is something wrong with Jason?" He asked quietly, "He seems really upset about something."
"I'm sure there is," Ty whispered back, "but I doubt he'll tell us. Do you know what's up with Mitch?"
Ian rose an eyebrow before he looked toward the table, having not realized that Mitch had walked in. Mitch had sat down at the table next to Jerome, not bothering to get any food. The look on Mitch's face told Ian that something was wrong, but it seemed that only Jerome, Ty, and Ian had noticed it. "I'm sure he's fine." Ian said quickly. Ty shrugged and went to sit at the table with four pancakes stacked on his plate.
Ian didn't eat anything himself, but instead waited for Jerome to come and get more food. When Jerome stood up and walked over, Ian grabbed his shoulder and pulled him outside of the kitchen and into the hallway, Jerome's plate still in his hands.
"Is there something wrong with Mitch?" Ian asked Jerome as soon as he shut the door. "He would either tell you or me first, if it had to be about... you know. Has he said anything?"
Jerome sighed, shaking his head. "No... He hasn't told me anything. I actually about to ask you the same thing, because, he hasn't actually explained everything about this whole situation to me."
Ian sighed as well, dragging a hand down his face. "Well, he hasn't. Hold on..."
Ian opened the door, leaning halfway through the doorway. He hissed Mitch's name, and the dozed out brunette jerked, looking up and giving Ian a confused look. He motioned for Mitch to come outside of the room, and Mitch quickly pushed out his chair and walked out. Neither of them noticed Jason giving Mitch a weary look as he walked by.
Ian shut the door as soon as Mitch walked out of the kitchen. "What is it?" Mitch said, traces of sleepiness in his voice.
"Is something wrong dude?" Jerome asked before Ian had the chance to say anything, "You seem upset about something."
Mitch nodded his head, a look of relief on his face. "Yes, actually. You guys remember Weiss?"
Ian and Jerome nodded their heads, both of them (though at different times) having remembered the conversations they had about the ghost and the help she had been giving Mitch.
"Well," Mitch said, the look of worry returning on his face. "It turns out that there were a few things about her that we didn't know about her."
"What do you mean?" Jerome asked, his arms crossed as he leaned against the wall.
"Turns out that the friend she was looking for... it..." Mitch hesitated, not knowing if he should go any further. He continued, Jerome and Ian's stares wearing into him. "It turns out that that friend was Jason."
"WHAT?!?! BUT HOW-" Jerome gasped, before Ian clapped his hand against his mouth, telling Jerome to quiet down. A second later, Ian yanked away his hand with a disgusted look on his face, wiping his hand on his pants. Ian shot Jerome an angry look, his ice blue eyes seeming to shine in anger as Jerome flicked his tongue along his lips.
"Jason told me that they used to be best friends, and that she died four years ago. I tried to ask Weiss about it, but she just ran off crying. I haven't heard from her since. Which is actually really bad, because I need to really ask her something. It is really important."
"What is it? Ian and I might be able to help you!" Jerome said, trying to keep a reassuring look on his face.
"Wait," Ian said, interrupting him. "Let's take this somewhere else. We wouldn't want anyone else hearing this would we? If it really is so important, than we need to do it where no one else will hear us. Jason especially."
Mitch nodded his head, and the three headed upstairs. I can't keep my nightmares, or whatever they are, a secret anymore... he thought to himself. I keep enough secrets... but this one just might mean life or death.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"... and that's how it always ends. I just fall and wake up as soon as I hit the ground. I just don't know what any of it means..." Mitch said, his hoodie on his lap and his wings relaxed behind him as he sat on the edge of his bed.
Ian, who was sitting in Mitch's rolling chair, had a concerned look on his face as he stared off into space, registering what Mitch had told them. "Do you think that it is a sort of vision?" he said quietly.
Mitch sighed, one of his wings twitching in frustration behind him. "I think it might be. It's like things are getting more... clear every time I have it. Like how the golden light became Weiss, or how the figure became more detailed over time. But it always ends the same way. With that figure disappearing in blood, and with me falling to the ground."
Jerome was sitting on the floor, his back against Mitch's desk and a confused expression on his face. "It might have something to do with you being an angel. If you're getting the same dream over and over, than it must mean something." He said in an uncharacteristically timid voice.
"I know that, but it still doesn't help that I have no flipping idea what it means!" Mitch said with frustration in his voice. "That's why I wanted to ask Weiss, seeing as I saw her there. She must know something. Do either of you two have any idea what it might mean?"
Jerome shook his head with a sigh. Ian, however, sat up a bit, looking at Mitch with his blue eyes, a grim look on his face. "That figure that apparently died... do you think it might have been one of us?"
Mitch felt a wrenching feeling in his gut at his friend's words, which sent shivers down his back like ice. He had thought about that possibility, but just the thought of it made him feel sick.
Meanwhile, a look of realization had come over Jerome's face as he looked worriedly between the silent Mitch and the thoughtful Ian. "Y-you really think so?"
Ian nodded. "It would make sense. Think about it. Mitch had that weird feeling when Ty got hurt, and if that reacts to people close to him, than it isn't that farfetched to think that maybe he would have visions of us. If Weiss was there, then why couldn't we? What do you think Mitch?"
Mitch narrowed his eyes, deep in thought. He has a point. He thought to himself. But it isn't like my vision is really helping me... 'the black-haired raven'? Who would that even be? Mitch was about to bring up that point when a sharp pain suddenly shot through his head. He let out a short scream as the pain increased, the Benja feeling like his head was splitting apart.
Mitch's wings moved to surround him, but as the pain became unbearable, his wings just flapped wildly behind him. His hands gripped the sides of his head, and Mitch could feel himself slipping out of consciousness as the pain still rang through his head. He could hear Ian and Jerome yelling, but it just seemed like background noise to Mitch, who had black creeping into his vision. He was only able to hold out a few seconds longer before he knocked out.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Where am I...? Mitch thought as he lay against the cold ground. There was a gentle breeze in the air, giving Mitch a sense of ease. He opened his eyes as he pushed himself into a sitting position, his wings stretching behind him.
Mitch didn't recognize the place he was in. It wasn't the white space Weiss inhabited, or the black space where he had been faced with the nightmares. It was instead a pale, light gray space, the breeze filling the air instead of the strange emptiness that was in the other two landscapes. Like the other two, the land seemed to go on forever, and as Mitch stood up and began to walk along, he could still see the white light following his steps.
Is this another vision? Or am I just dreaming? Mitch thought to himself as he walked along the endless path. If it is a vision, then what am I supposed to be looking for? The figure from before? Maybe this is where Weiss went off to...
Mitch thought as he walked along, trying to piece together what might be going on. If this is a vision, it could've waited until I slept instead of making me knock-out like that. He thought sourly. Stupid powers. He could feel his wings moving behind him, itching to fly. If this another vision, I should probably be looking for someone shouldn't I?
Mitch quickly began to flap his wings behind him, quickly gaining altitude among the breeze. But he didn't go up too far, deciding instead to let himself glide quickly along the air. He didn't go far when something caught his eye.
Directly in front of him was the bright white light, with twinkling shimmers swirling around it in rings of all different colors. Mitch flew over to it and landed directly in front of it, the beautiful sight enchanting him.
"What are you?" Mitch mumbled under his breath, reaching toward the light. The light didn't react to his touch, the colorful shimmers merely swirling around Mitch's hand as he touched it. Mitch drew his hand back, and walked around the white light, trying to figure out what it was.
That's when one of the rings, one of a bright, shimmery yellow, unraveled itself from the light, and shot off a few yards away from where Mitch was standing. Mitch jumped back in surprise as the yellow shimmer began to swirl around the spot where it had landed like a vortex, a yellow light forming in the middle. "What the actual hell?" Mitch shouted, surprise in his voice. There was a sudden yellow flash, and Mitch quickly swiped one of his wings over his eyes to protect it from the blinding light.
When the light subsided, Mitch moved his wing to look back at the shimmer. What he saw made his jaw drop wide open. In the place of the yellow light... was Adam. At least, it resembled Adam. It wasn't like the figure or the golden Weiss that Mitch had seen either. It looked like the real Adam, the only difference being that his eyes were a glowing gold. The yellow shimmer was swirling around him as he stood with his arms at his sides, a goofy look on his face. The look-alike was completely still, like a statue.
Mitch slowly walked up to him, an eyebrow raised. Mitch reached to grab the Adam look-alike's shoulder, but instead of his hand resting on it, his hand went right through it, like a hologram. Mitch huffed, before swiping his hand across the Adam's chest, his hand going right through that as well.
"What is going on?" Mitch said to himself as he backed up, his head turning back to the white light. Two more of the rings around the light flew off, the ones made of a purple shimmer, and a cyan one. Both of them landed right next to the Adam look-alike, and Mitch one again had to cover his eyes from the blinding purple and cyan flashes. When Mitch uncovered his eyes, there were look-alikes of Ty and Quentin standing with the one of Adam. The Ty look-alike was leaning against the Adam with his arms crossed with purple shimmers around him, a smirk on his face. His eyes were glowing a bright purple. The Quentin look-alike had one arm slung around the Adam's neck, his other arm behind him. There was a weary look on his face, his eyes glowing blue with cyan shimmers around him. He and Ty were still like statues as well. Mitch watched as the yellow, cyan, and purple shimmers came together to form a tri-colored ring of shimmers around him.
"I'm going to just try and pretend like I'm not freaked out about this... Nope. I can't." Mitch mumbled as there were to more flashes form behind him, a lighter and darker gray. He whipped around to see that there were two more look-alikes were behind him, a few yards away from the light. It was Mat and Ryan. They were standing shoulder to shoulder, a ring of light and dark gray swirling around them. The Mat's eyes were shining light gray, while the Ryan's was a dark gray. Like the others, they were as still as statues.
Mitch watched as five more rings flew from the light in a pack, the shimmering colors of orange, green, red-orange, navy, and light blue. Unlike the other shimmers, these five colors were all bunched together in a ring, creating a rainbow-like flash when their vortex formed. The flash was brighter than the others, and caught Mitch by surprise, almost making him fall over. As Mitch lowered his arm from over his eyes, he raised an eyebrow not in surprise, but confusion. There were five look-alikes within the five-colored ring. However, they were not people who Mitch had expected to see.
The five look-alikes resembled people who Mitch had only met recently, and had only filmed a few videos with. The five were standing close together, and looked like they were posing for a picture. They resembled Mitch's vague friends... Preston, Rob, Vikk, Lachlan, and Pete. Rob had a light blue glow in his eyes, and had his arm tightly around Vikk's neck as he used his free hand to give him a forceful noogie. Vikk had a look of protest on his face, and had a blue glow in his eyes as he tried to pry Rob's arm from around his neck. Next to them was Lachlan, who was laughing his head off at their actions with a red-orange light in his eyes, and Pete, who had his arms crossed in disapproval with a green glow in his eyes. Preston was sitting on the ground by Lachlan's feet, looking at Pete with an orange light in his eyes. His mouth was open like he was trying to talk to Pete.
Mitch looked at the three groups of look-alikes, his eyebrows furrowed as he thought. What is the point of me seeing this? He thought as he looked back to the light. I feel like this might be a vision, but I don't know... Why are these dreams so confusing?!?!?
The light only had four rings still around it. The shimmers were the colors of silver, gold, bronze, and sapphire. However, unlike the other rings, these rings, instead of shooting off some distance away, shot into the air above the light as the white light faded away. Mitch, with a loud yell, jumped back as the four lines of shimmers crashed loudly against the ground, creating a huge cloud of dust, which completely obscured Mitch's vision. Mitch flung his wings over his eyes to keep the dust away from his face. He stayed in that position as the dust settled, and he slowly and reluctantly pushed his wings away from his face.
The other look-alikes had disappeared, and in their place were four new ones, standing together. Two of them resembled Ian and Jerome, who were standing close together. The Ian look-alike was wearing a black hoodie, with his hands stuffed inside of its pockets, a silver glow in his eyes and a happy look on his face. Jerome looked like he was waving to someone, and had a bronze glow in his eyes with a goofy grin on his face. There was a ring of bronze and silver shimmers around them. Standing a few feet away from them were Jason and Weiss, who had their arms draped around each other. Jason and Weiss were looking at each other with excited expressions, Jason's eyes glowing a bright sapphire and Weiss' a shining gold. The shimmering ring around them shared the same colors.
They look so happy... Mitch thought as a small grin appeared on his face. Why can't it be like this? Why can't we all be happy? Why do I have to be the one to figure this out? I can't do this alone!
"But you aren't alone Mitchell."
Mitch whipped around, his eyes wide as he saw who was standing behind him. It was the white light, but like how the golden light had taken the form of Weiss, the white light had taken the shape of Mitch. However, there were no wings behind him. "What does that mean?!?!" Mitch said, anger creeping into his voice.
The light Mitch ignored the question, walking past Mitch and toward the look-alikes. "You have so many friends... so many people who love you..." The light said, gesturing to the Jerome, Ian, Weiss, and Jason look-alikes. His voice had the same ghostly echo as Weiss' did. "Yet you choose to keep things secret, even from those who know your biggest one."
"I can't tell the others! They might-" Mitch yelled, before stopping himself, looking angrily toward the light. "Just who are you anyways?"
The light Mitch gave his counterpart an expressionless look. "I'm you."
Before Mitch could reply, he felt a shock of pain run through his head. Mitch let out a shout of pain, shutting his eyes as he fell to his knees, his hands gripping the sides of his head. The pain slowly ebbed away, and when Mitch opened his eyes, he found himself not in the peaceful gray space, but in the empty black abyss that held his nightmares. The pillars of white light were around him, and the Weiss was standing above him, but instead of the golden light Weiss, it was the one he had seen in the gray space. She was surrounded in golden shimmers, and her eyes were a glowing gold.
Mitch didn't hesitate to immediately start to fly toward the girl, rage burning in his gut as he flew. He could feel his wings beating with all of Mitch's force as he neared the girl, his eyes burning with a strange sense of hope.
He suddenly felt the chains grip his wrists and ankles... but this time he could see them. The chains were glistening silver, a few shimmers of silver on the cuffs. Regardless of the force pulling him down, he resisted, pulling and yanking as hard as he could as he continued to fly with all of his might, regardless of the fear of one of his wings snapping. He roared as he punched the air, the chain on his right arm snapping near the cuffs. He did the same with his left, the shimmering silver chain breaking there as well. He broke the chains around his ankles with two mighty kicks.
He let out a roar of rage as he soared, now free of the chains that had been his downfall so many times before. It wasn't long before Mitch within feet of Weiss, and he reached out a hand toward her. "WEISS!!!" He yelled as he grabbed her wrist.
The look-alike whipped around, a surprised look on her face as she looked at Mitch. Mitch smiled, a sense of victory in his gaze as he hovered in the air next to the Weiss. The look-alike opened her mouth to speak to him, but before she could speak, there was a blinding flash, and Mitch felt pain suddenly surge through him. He let go of Weiss as he fell to the ground, one of his wings lying broken as he fell. He yelled in pain as he flapped his other wing as hard as he could, his body feeling like it was on fire. He looked around him frantically, and he swore, for just a split second that the pillars around him were on fire.
He had no time to think as another wave of mighty pain came from his only working wing. It had snapped at the joint, and it fell limp. With one of his wings broken and one feeling like it was on fire, Mitch was helpless as he screamed in pain.
"You can't save him. He is going to die. He must die. The black-haired raven must die. The white-winged warrior will be bathed in fire."
A moment later Mitch hit the ground.
