Chapter Nineteen: Storm Brewing

"Mitch. Wake up. Mitch."

Mitch groaned sleepily as he felt someone tugging on one of his wings. He cracked an eye open to see that it was Jerome, who was pulling impatiently on his right wing. Mitch let out another groan before he shut his eyes again.

"Let me sleep." Mitch said, his voice groggy. "I wanna sleep. I need sleep."

"Well whose fault is that for staying up so late?" Jerome said as he pulled harder on Mitch's wing. "Anyways breakfast is ready."

Mitch growled in annoyance as Jerome continued to pull on his wing. "Biggums, let me sleep..." He mumbled. "I didn't even fly last night... I just want to sleep."

"That's more of an excuse for you to get up!" Jerome huffed. Mitch didn't reply, instead folding in his wings so that Jerome wouldn't mess with them. "I'll give you one last warning Biggums. We need to eat breakfast." Mitch just groaned in response.

Jerome sighed, before he bent over and grabbed the bottom of Mitch's mattress, and with one huge heave, Jerome pushed up the mattress, sending Mitch rolling onto the floor. Jerome laughed as he put the mattress back where it was.

Mitch was sprawled onto the floor with a look on confusion on his face, one of his wings folded in while the other was stretched out wide. "Ow." Mitch whimpered.

"It's not hard to toss you off of a bed when you're light." Jerome said with a mocking tone of seriousness in his voice as he crossed his arms. "Now let's get downstairs, I'm freaking starving!"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Morning guys!" Ty said cheerily as Mitch and Jerome walked into the kitchen. As usual, Ian was cooking the food, as he was flopping eggs onto plate's for Mitch and Jerome. Mitch and Jerome had been the last to get into the kitchen, and they sat at the counter, Ty being the only other person sitting there. Jason, Adam, and Quentin had taken their breakfast and went into the living room with it.

"About time you guys woke up!" Ian said with a laugh. "I was about to give your food to the feral anim- I mean Adam." That made Mitch and Ty laugh. It also made Jerome almost choke on his food.

Ian was about to crack out another joke when they heard Quentin call for them from the living room. "Hey guys, check this out!"

Raising an eyebrow, Mitch followed the others into the living room. When they walked in, Quentin gestured to the television. It was switched to the news, and the weatherman was reading the weather for the day.

"Today's forecast shows a high chance of heavy rain and storms later today. Lots of lightning is to be expected as well." The weatherman read in a monotone voice, pointing to the map, showing that a gigantic storm was rolling in.

"Holy crap!" Adam said from his seat on the couch. "We never get storms this big!"

"Yeah... it's rare to get storms like these... especially in California." Ian commented quietly. "Our power might actually end up going out later. Maybe."

"Maybe we should get our recordings done for today... In case the power goes out." Mitch said, leaning against the couch.

"Good idea." Jason said, standing up and stretching. There was a weird tone of sadness in his voice. "I'm actually going to go do that now."

As soon as Jason had finished saying that, there was a loud clap of thunder, making everyone in the room jump. Following it was the pitter patter of the rain.

With that, everyone headed up to their rooms to record while they could.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jason sighed as he leaned forward in his office chair, the only noise being the storm raging outside. There was a notebook opened on his desk, and a pencil was in Jason's hand as he continued to scribble in the notebook, all of Jason's focus going into the picture forming on the paper in front of him. The power had gone out a bit ago, and Jason was left with his imagination to entertain him.

He was pulled out of his thoughts by a knocking on his door. "Jason? Can I come in?" Adam asked from the other side.

"Yeah." Jason said with a raised eyebrow.

Adam walked in, and quietly shut the door behind him. His phone was in his hand, and he shut off the flashlight application, which was helping him walk through the dark house (it was already late at night).

"What's up Adam?" Jason asked as Adam sat on the end of his bed. Adam sighed, before replying.

"Jason, are you okay?" He asked quietly.

"Of course. What makes you think that I'm not?" Jason said with a snicker.

Adam, however, still had a serious expression on his face. "You haven't been acting like yourself lately. Please don't lie to me dude. Is something wrong?"

Jason hesitated with his reply. As much as he wanted to vent to his best friend about everything... Weiss, his 'dream', how weird Mitch, Ian, and Jerome had been acting since the accident... but he just couldn't bring himself to saying it. He wouldn't understand. I have to do this myself. He thought to himself.

"I'm okay." Jason said simply, wanting to stop the conversation. Adam just huffed in response. It was obvious that Jason was lying, but Adam didn't want to push him.

"So... did you draw that? It looks really good!" Adam said, trying to change the subject, as he pointed to the picture in the notebook.

"Oh, this? It's just a scribble, that's all." Jason said, handing it to Adam so he could see it closer.

The picture cover most of the page, and there was a single figure on the page. It was a knight clad in armor, and the knight was holding a big sword in his hands. But the most noticeable thing was the large pair of wings sprouting from the knight's back. Next to the knight were the words 'White-Winged Warrior'.

"Where did you think-" Adam said, before being interrupted by his phone, which started vibrating on the bed. "Shoot... Sorry Jason, Alesa's calling, I've gotta answer it. Sorry!"

With that, Adam rushed out of the room, leaving Jason alone with the picture of his warrior.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Are you nuts??!?!? It's like a monsoon out there!!!" Jerome hissed.

"Dude, I have to fly tonight! I haven't flown in days. Besides, I'll be fine! It's just rain and a little lightning, that's all!" Mitch whisper-yelled back, trying to keep his voice down. Jerome had caught him trying to sneak outside to fly, and Jerome wasn't thrilled about him flying in such serious weather.

"Dude, this is not safe!" Jerome whispered. "It can't wait until tomorrow?"

Jerome let out a growl when Mitch shook his head.

"Fine." Jerome sighed as he headed into his room. "But... please be careful."

Mitch gave Jerome a thumbs-up before he headed downstairs, his wings slightly dragging behind him.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mitch let out a surprised yell as he stepped outside, the heavy rain hitting hard against him, soaking him. Part of him wanted to go back inside and call it quits, but he knew that he needed to do this.

Though he didn't say anything about it to Jerome or Ian, Mitch was only outside because he wanted to practice his flight. He wanted to be ready for whenever he had the vision again... he wanted to talk to that Golden Weiss, and he wasn't going to be stopped by chains... or broken wings. He thought that maybe, just maybe, if he could fly through roaring rain, then maybe he could finally know what Golden Weiss would say when he reached her.

He was snapped out of his thoughts by a loud clap of thunder nearby... a lightning bolt appearing close as well. Mitch let out a huff before he stretched his soaking wings out wide and took off into the sky. It was hard for Mitch to gain any altitude, his body being weighted down by his soaking wings and clothes. Regardless, Mitch kept the steady beat of his wings, and he eventually gained enough altitude to start flying around freely.

He let out a yell of surprise as another bolt of lightning flashed, this time only not too far away from him. He tried his best to ignore it however, and tried to focus on what he was doing. He trying to do a loop in the air, but the hammering rain kept him from doing so. He tried other tricks as well, but they were also halted by the rain. So Mitch instead tried to just fly laps around the house, but the joints moving his wings began to ache after three laps.

Am I really this hopeless? Mitch thought to himself as he hovered high above the pool, trying to think of a solution.

He eventually decided to head inside, and he felt like he could physically feel the dent in his pride. He was about to start heading down when he felt a weird feeling in the back of his head.

This is the same feeling when Ty got hurt! He thought to himself. But unlike that time, the feeling was much stronger. Mitch hovered in the air for a minute, looking for anything out of place. He couldn't see any lights on in the house... so what was wrong?

Mitch's thought's were interrupted by more thunder, Mitch being able to feel the rumble in his wings. Great. Does this mean more light-

Mitch didn't get to finish his thought as a bright flash obscured his vision, and he felt a sudden shock rock his body, pain surging through his body like a wildfire. He screamed in pain as the lightning surged through him, rendering him unable to do much as he fell from the sky.

He tried to flap his wings, but he let out another scream when he saw what was causing the searing burn in his body as he desperately tried to keep himself in the air as black began to fill his vision.

Most of his left wing was on fire, set ablaze by the lighting.

Mitch yelled as he flapped both of his wings as hard as he could, with the little sensation left in his body. That's when another pain suddenly shot through him. Mitch watched as he right wing bent at an abnormal angle, before lying uselessly as he fell, his right wing broken.

As Mitch saw the ground rushing into his view, he could only let out one last cry of pain before he passed out...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jerome tapped his fingers nervously on his desk as he watched Mitch fly in the rain through his window, trying to keep himself from having a heart attack as he watched Mitch's failed trick attempts in the air. He was also trying to keep himself from running out there and screaming for Mitch to stop before he got himself killed.

Jerome took a deep breath in an attempt to keep himself calm as he continued to watch him fly. He rose an eyebrow as Mitch suddenly stopped midair, the Benja looking like he was looking for something. Jerome watched with interest, wondering what might have spooked Mitch out like that.

And that's when it happened.

Jerome heard a loud clap of thunder, and a lightning bolt suddenly dropped from the sky, striking one of Mitch's wings.

"MITCH!!!" Jerome screamed as he watched flames rise from his white feathers, Jerome hearing the faint screams from outside.

He and his burning wings.

He watched hopelessly as the Benja fought to keep himself in the air. Jerome screamed again when he watched Mitch's other wing snap, Mitch quickly falling to the ground.

Jerome shot out of his chair, throwing his bedroom door open as he ran down the hallway toward the stairs. He also saw Ian bust out of his room as well. "Jerome!" Ian yelled. "Mitch, he landed in the pool!"

Jerome was unable to reply as he almost ran right into Adam, who had opened his door. "J-Jerome?" He asked sleepily. "W-Was that you screaming?"

Jerome watched as Ian ran down the stairs, and Jerome turned around to see that Ty, Jason, and Quentin had emerged from their rooms as well. They all had panicked looks on their faces, as they all heard Jerome's scream.

Jerome quickly shouldered Adam out of the way, ignoring Adam's calls for him.

Jerome quickly ran outside, just in time to see Ian dive into the pool. Jerome ran to the edge of the pool, looking for Ian and Mitch. It was hard to see from the vision obscuring rain. A few moments passed, and Jerome was about to dive himself when Ian suddenly popped his head out of the water, carrying a knocked-out Mitch on his back. "Help me pull him out!" Ian yelled.

Jerome nodded, and helped Ian pull the completely drenched Mitch out of the pool. Jerome chocked out a gasp when he saw Mitch's water-soaked wings. His right wing was at a completely abnormal angle, and his left wing was completely scorched, half of his sleek, white feathers a charred black. There were actually some holes in his wing where the feathers had completely burned away.

Jerome couldn't tell what was rolling down his cheek. Tears or rain. Most likely both.

There was a loud splash as Ian pulled himself out of the water, his clothes completely soaked.

"I-Ian..." Jerome stuttered, trying to keep himself from breaking down into tears. "what are we gonna do? Is he...?"

"No." Ian said grimly. "He's still breathing. That would normally kill a normal human, but his quick healing might have saved him here."

Jerome was about to reply when another voice pierced through the sound of the rain.

"J-Jerome? I-Ian? Is that...Mitch? A-Are those r-real...wings?"

Ian and Jerome whipped around, and both of their stomachs dropped.

Even through the vision obscuring storm... it was obvious to who was there. Standing on the patio was Adam, who had been stuttering. Behind him was Jason, Quentin, and Ty.

The secret was out.
