Chapter Fifteen: Best Friends Forever (Apology)

Jason sat on the small wooden bench on the street corner, watching as the cars rushed by him. Small snowflakes were beginning to fall from the sky as he swung his feet back and forth, a pair of earphones in his ears with Chemical Brothers blasting at max volume. He shivered at the coolness in the air as he pulled his black hoodie closer to him. Jason sighed, clicking the skip button on his iPod until it came onto "Feel Good Inc.", and Jason sat there with a smile on his face as he hummed to the loud music. He didn't notice the girl sneaking up behind him until she put her hands onto his shoulders and shook him as hard as she could.

Jason screamed as he jumped to his feet, getting into a defensive position while the girl laughed, leaning onto the bench to keep herself from falling over from her loud laughter. "Y-You scream like a g-girl!" She yelled between her laughs.

Jason let out a groan of frustration as he dropped his hands, taking his earphones out of his ears and stuffing them into his hoodie pocket. "Weiss! I told you not to sneak up on me like that!" He said frustratingly as he gave the winter-adorned girl a light punch in the shoulder. Weiss just snickered and gave her friend a shove in the chest, watching as he stumbled back and fell into the snow. He pushed himself up and grabbed Weiss by her jade scarf, pulling her into the snow with him. They were both silent for a minute before they broke into fits of laughter.

That street corner had become the two's meeting place, being smack in the middle of the path to each other's houses. They met there everyday after school, but Weiss always tended to be late (they attended different schools, so she had to hurry over there). The wooden bench had become familiar to Jason from all of the times he had sat there waiting for her. He had actually fallen asleep multiple times on it, which would give Weiss the golden opportunity to push him onto the ground wiht a loud yell (after she drew on his face of course). On the front of the bench were the words 'Weiss and Jason: Best Friends Forever!' in Sharpie, which Weiss had written recently in her loopy handwriting.

The two eventually got themselves up, shaking the snow from their clothes. The snowfall had begun to increase, adding to the piles of snow on the ground. Jason and Weiss sat down on the wooden bench, watching peacefully as the snowflakes fluttered to the ground without a sound. They had a short competition to see who could catch the most snowflakes on their tongues, which Jason had won. They talked about the series finale of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, which they had watched together ("Weren't you crying Jason?" "S-Shut up!"). They had a long chat about the upcoming Bioshock sequel that would come out in a few months, which Weiss had been waiting forever for. The sun had begun to set in the sky, night creeping along. Jason was happy. It was just another peaceful day for the two best friends. The fifteen year-olds sat talking, hardly noticing the harsh snow that had come upon them.

Eventually Weiss stood up, checking the time on her phone. "Shoot!" She said in a panicked voice. "I've got to get going! My parents will freak out if I'm not home before dinner!"

Jason laughed. Weiss' parents are so protective of her... It's a wonder she's even allowed out of the house. He thought to himself as he shivered. "Well, it's getting dark out, so you might want to hurry home. You up for maybe seeing that movie Avatar this weekend?"

Weiss smiled. "The one with the blue dudes? Yeah, I'd love to!" The two smiled, and seeing the shiver Jason had gotten, Weiss took off her scarf from around her neck and tossed it to Jason, who caught it, giving Weiss a grateful look before winding it around his neck. "Wow, this snow is getting really rough!" Weiss yelled as the snow began to pick up speed. Her and Jason had to narrow their eyes against the snow that was obscuring their vision.

"It sure is. You want to stay at my place until it lightens up?" Jason asked, stuffing his hands in his pockets. "My parents probably wouldn't mind."

Weiss rolled her eyes. "I'm not a little girl any more Jason! I'll be fine on my own!" Weiss laughed, Jason putting up his hands defensively. Weiss gave Jason one last wave before running off down the sidewalk, Jason going in the opposite direction.

Jason walked slowly, watching the glistening snowflakes as they came into view. He didn't even get two steps away from the street corner before he felt his phone buzz in his pocket. He sighed and pulled it out, seeing that it was a text from Weiss. He put a hand over his screen to keep snow from getting on it as he read the message.

Ditzy: Yo, you didn't give me my scarf back! I want it back tomorrow!

Jason quickly text back, a grin on his face.

Astronaut: I'll give it to you tomorrow, promise!

Jason quickly stuffed his phone back in his pocket and continued on his way home.

He jumped as he heard the loud sound of tires squealing against the asphalt as a scream filled the air, before the scream was suddenly cut off. Jason felt his stomach drop as he recognized who the scream belonged to. He quickly spun around, running toward the scream as fast as his feet would carry him. "Weiss! WEISS!!!" Jason screamed as the scarf around his neck whipping behind him in the wind, Jason screaming his friends name as he ran down the street.

The day was December 17th, 2009.

The day that Weiss Thompson was hit by a speeding van among the vision-obscuring snow. The same day that she died of fatal injuries just seconds after she was struck. The day she became a restless spirit who searched for her friend for years to come.

The day that Jason Probst had found the crippled body of his best friend. The same day that he had his heart broken by the sudden death of his beloved childhood friend. The day he became scarred by the loss of his friend and continued to blame himself for years to come.

The day that an unbreakable bond was broken.

Jason let out a loud yell as he jerked awake in his bed. He felt tears rolling down his cheeks as he looked around his room. He choked out a sob as flashes of the memory entered his mind. He let his head hit the pillow as his arm drew over his eyes, covering them from the light coming from his computer.

"Weiss..." He choked out between his cries, "I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry..."
