Chapter 10: Love Gained

I moan as I flap to school. I did not want to go back. I didn't want to go to Mythological History or True Form and Power class. I get to school just as the first bell rings. When I walk in I see people leaving from talking to friends and the teacher.

"'Sup, Anna?" The boy named Lance asks.

"Me? You're talking to me?" I ask him. Considering how mad he was, it's a shock he is even talking to me at all.

"Yeah. Sorry for my outburst yesterday, no one ever stands up to me the way you did. I like that." He winks. I smile at him. It's nice to be making some friends.

"Actually not so well. But it's nice that you asked me." I say thoughtfully. I'm not all evil and mean once you get to know me. He looks taken aback when I say this.

"Is it Terris? Ugh, he is bad news for anyone who's new here. You'd be better off staying far away from him. Like, really far." He warns. I give him a questioning look but decide I should take his advice.

"Alright." I say. "What do you suggest I do then?"

"Hang out with me. I'm not a bad croud to hang out with." He says. I nod. The second bell rings and I go to my seat. I stare at Lance and he stares at me. I'm paying no attention to the teacher because I already know everything.

"How about you, Anna?" I look at the teacher. "What's your family tree?"

"I-I don't know. I've never had anyone to tell me where I came from." I say quietly, sinking down in my seat.

"I'm truly sorry I asked, Anna. I didn't mean to put you in this awkward position." The teacher says.

"It's alright, sir." I say quietly. The whole class is looking at me. I sigh and look at Lance. He gives me a reassuring smile and I feel better. I look back at Terris for a minute, who is glaring swords at Lance.

I doodle a picture of myself on my paper. I didn't realize the bell had rung until Lance comes up to my desk.

"Nice drawing. Is that you?" He asks.

"Thanks. And yeah it's me. When I'm human I look like this." I say. He gives a small half smile.

I walk to my next class and take my seat next to Terris.

"Stay away from him." He orders. His face is cold and hard. His eyes are black and focused on the desk. I stare at him.

"You know, he said the same thing about you." I say. He looks at me and takes my hand.

"Do you believe me or him." He asks, his face loosening a bit.

"You're making it hard not to say you." I say smiling at him. He grips my hand, smiling back.

"Do you. Believe me or him?" He says quietly. His eyes may be black but they're still beautiful looking into mine.

"You." I say quietly. He's hypnotizing and it's hard not to say him. He smiles brighter, his face going back to normal.

"And I believed you would say that." He says, putting his other hand on my face.

"How about that hang out?" I ask.

"Tonight. I'll pick you up and we'll head to the beach." I smile brightly.
