Ch. 9 I have a message for you
" Our journey to the Fire Nation is a long one. So, make yourself at home. If you need to use the restroom or shower, the bathroom is right there." Iroh points to a second door in the bedroom.
" And if you need anything, such as someone to talk to or to keep company. My room is to the right of yours. My Nephew's is to the left of yours." Iroh looks at Kairi.
Kairi nodded, watching Iroh leave the bedroom to give her privacy. She looked at her surroundings, trying to figure out how to let her loved ones know she was alive.
" I'll try to figure it out once we reach the nearest Village," She murmured.
" For the meantime, a shower seems good." She lifts her right arm and smells her armpit. " Yup. A shower is what I needed." She shivered, looking slightly disgusted.
She turns, walks towards the bathroom, and opens the door. She enters, closes the door behind her, and sets up the shower. She removes her clothing and sets it to the side.
She touched the water and noticed it was warm. She looked at herself in the mirror and shrugged, thinking it was best to get used to warm water and warm weather now that she was leaving the South Pole.
She stepped inside the shower, and her body shivered when she felt the warm water. Several minutes later, she finished showering and stepped out.
" What am I going to wear?" She mumbled while looking at her surroundings. Her blue-grey eyes blinked when she saw herself through the bathroom mirror.
Her eyes dimmed when she saw the burn scars from her right thigh to her right leg. Her hands began to shake as memories of that awful night punched her in the gut.
A knock grabs her attention.
" Kairi. It's me, Iroh. I bought suitable clothes for you since I know no clothes are in the closet and cabinets." Iroh spoke from outside the bedroom.
" Be there in a minute!" Kairi shouts.
She grabs a black and red bathrobe and puts it on. She exits the bathroom, walks towards the door, and opens it, seeing Iroh.
" Thank you. I was wondering what I was going to wear." She shyly stares at Iroh.
Iroh holds the clothes in his hands. " It's not much. But, I hope it fits you well and makes you comfortable." He passed the clothing to Kairi.
Kairi takes the clothing and looks at Iroh. " I appreciate what you do for me." She softly smiled.
" It's the least I can do for you since my Nephew forced you to stay here. Away from your home." Iroh responded.
Kairi nodded.
" I'll go and get ready." She turned, briefly revealing her burned side to Iroh, and closed the door.
Iroh's golden eyes blinked and widened when he saw the burns on Kairi's right leg. He hears the door slam, realizing that Kairi has closed the door.
" Who has hurt you, Dear Child?" He whispered.
He turns around and walks away, looking conflicted. He is trying to figure out what year Kairi got hurt by a Fire Nation member. The coloring of the scar looked similar to Zuko's, so he figured that the scar was much older and not recent.
Kairi puts on the clothes that Iroh gave her. She turns and looks at the body mirror in the bedroom. She wore a short-sleeved, deep red shirt and black pants. Her feet were bare since her snow boots were beside the bed.
She turns and stares at a shrine. Her eyes blinked, seeing a painting of an older male wearing Fire Nation clothes.
She walks towards the shrine and kneels, seeing the name underneath the painting.
" Avatar Roku," She read.
She lifts her head and stares at the painting with mixed emotions.
' He's Aang's predecessor!' She internally shouted.
" I wonder," She whispered, clapped her hands, and closed her eyes.
" O' Avatar Roku," She starts to pray. " If what Gran Gran told me is true and you can hear my words. Please let the current Avatar, Aang, know I am safe." She lightly bites her lips, getting emotional.
" Please, tell Aang to tell Sokka I love him and Gran Gran. And that I will miss them both so much. And if Katara is there, tell her I hope she likes her wish since I am no longer in her life," She mumbled.
" In case Aang wonders where I am. Let him know that I am acting as him for his safety. A Fire Nation Prince and his men took me captive. And not wanting him to hurt Aang and the Southern Water Tribe, I decided to pose as him for everyone's safety," She bows, her head touching the ground.
Avatar Roku's eyes on the painting briefly glowed, hearing Kairi's prayers.
At the South Pole, Appa was flying with Aang, Sokka, and Katara asleep on his back.
" Aang," An older masculine voice called out.
Aang's nose twitches.
" Aang. Wake up," The masculine voice firmly says, waking Aang up from his slumber.
Aang's grey eyes blinked, and he looked forward, seeing his predecessor, Avatar Roku, floating.
His eyebrows rose, and his eyes widened when he saw Avatar Roku. He stands looking at the older Avatar with mixed emotions.
" Avatar Roku," He bows his head, greeting Avatar Roku formally.
" No need to bow, Aang," Avatar Roku smiled.
Aang lifts his head and looks at Avatar Roku curiously.
" I have a message for you," Avatar Roku answered Aang's internal question.
Aang's eyes blinked, wondering what kind of message he had from Avatar Roku.
" It is from your friend, Kairi," Avatar Roku told Aang.
Aang's eyes widened, looking surprised at the mention of Kairi.
" Kairi! You know where she's at?" He asked.
Hearing Kairi's name caused Sokka and Katara to wake up. They looked and saw that Aang was staring at the morning sky.
" Aang?" Sokka called out, looking confused.
" Yes. I know where Kairi is at," Avatar Roku responded.
" Where is Kairi?" Aang asked.
Sokka looked at Aang with mixed emotions when he heard him say Kairi's name.
" Who is he talking to?" Katara asked.
" Shush!" Sokka puts his finger on his lips, wanting to hear Aang's conversation with whoever he is speaking to since they are talking about his twin sister.
" Your friend, Kairi, has been taken captive by my Great-Grandson, a Fire Nation Royal named Zuko," Avatar Roku confessed.
Aang looked at Avatar Roku in disbelief.
" What! Kairi's been captured by the Fire Nation!" He shouted, causing Sokka to look at him in horror.
Katara's eyes widened when she heard that her older sister had been captured by the Fire Nation.
" Aang!" Sokka stands and walks towards Aang, grabbing him by the collar. " What do you mean by my sister being captured by the Fire Nation?" He asked, looking at him worryingly.
Aang looked at Sokka and then at Avatar Roku.
Avatar Roku stared at Sokka and Katara, figuring they were Kairi's siblings, which she mentioned in her prayer.
" Are they Sokka and Katara?" He asked, wanting to double-check with Aang.
" Yeah. The guy who is holding me by the collar is Sokka. Kairi's older brother and twin. The girl that looks somewhat like Kairi is Katara, her younger sister," Aang responded.
" Aang. Who are you talking to?" Katara asked since Sokka still wanted an answer about how Kairi was in the hands of the Fire Nation.
" I'm talking to Avatar Roku," Aang looks at the two siblings.
Sokka and Katara looked surprised that Aang was talking to the former Avatar.
" And to answer Sokka's question as to why his sister is in the hands of the Fire Nation. She decided to pose as you, Aang, since she didn't want the Fire Nation to know of your whereabouts and for them to destroy her Village," Avatar Roku explained.
Aang looked shocked to hear that Kairi sacrificed her life for his and her Village's sake.
Sokka noticed that Aang looked shocked.
" What? What did he tell you?" He asked, shaking Aang.
Aang looks at Sokka, his grey eyes intently staring at the other male's deep blue eyes.
" And Kairi also wants Katara to know that she hopes her sister is happy since she won't be in her life," Avatar Roku looked at Katara.
Aang heard Avatar Roku, and he looked at Katara.
" I hope you are happy!" He blurts out, causing Sokka to turn and look at Katara.
Katara's eyes blinked, looking confused since she saw Aang looking at her angrily.
" Because of you! Kairi decided it was for the best to sacrifice her life and pose as me so that the Fire Nation wouldn't hurt me or know of your Village's whereabouts," Aang firmly says.
Sokka looks at Aang, staring at him with mixed emotions, when he hears what happened to his twin sister.
Tears welled up in Katara's eyes when she heard what happened to her older sister.
" First, Mom. Now Kairi," Sokka whispered.
His eyes dimmed.
" I cannot lose her," He murmured.
" We need to find her, Aang! I will never forgive myself if something were to happen to her," His eyes intently stared at Aang.
Aang nodded.
" I'll help you, Sokka. I can't believe she is willing to pose as me, as an Avatar, to ensure that nothing horrible happens to me or her Village," He frowned, feeling horrible.
" Speaking of Village. We need to go back. I have to let Gran Gran know what happened. I also need to get my weapons and belongings. I don't care how long we are going to travel. Kairi is out there and needs us," Sokka firmly says.
Katara stares at Sokka, seeing their father in him.
" I'm still going with you guys," She says, causing Sokka and Aang to look at her.
" It's my fault that Kairi got captured by the Fire Nation. If Mom was alive or Dad was here, they'd be mad at me for what I did to her. So, I will help you guys save her," She looks at the two males.
" When we see Kairi, you better apologize to her," Sokka firmly says.
Katara nodded.
Sokka lets go of Aang, and the young Avatar turns to look at Avatar Roku.
" Thank you for telling us what happened to Kairi," Aang smiled.
Avatar Roku nodded.
" Between you and me, I feel her presence would bring goodness into my Great-Grandson's life. Bringing him to the righteous path and not the dark road he is in," He looks at Aang.
Aang opened his mouth to say something but stopped when he saw Avatar Roku disappear.
He walks towards Appa's head and sits down, grabbing the rein.
" Let's go to the Southern Water Tribe, Appa. Yip! Yip!" He watched Appa turn around and fly toward the Southern Water Tribe.
Sokka and Katara sat, holding onto the saddle. The two siblings didn't look at each other. Instead, they were looking at their surroundings as their thoughts were occupied by Kairi's wellbeing.
' Kairi. Don't worry. Continue living for our sake. We'll save you,' Sokka internally says.
' Kairi. I'm so sorry. I was so angry because you were the last person to watch Mom die. You got to hear her last words and be there for her after she took her last breath. That is why, to this day, I was jealous because I wasn't even there to say goodbye to her,' Katara internally says.
A knock on the door grabs Kairi's attention. She stands and turns, walking towards the door. She opens it and sees Prince Zuko looking at her.
" What do you want?" Kairi asked with a raised eyebrow.
" Don't talk to me in that attitude. Uncle Iroh wants me to get to know you since you are our guest and all," Prince Zuko mumbled.
Kairi's light blue eyes intently stared at Prince Zuko's golden eyes.
" Want to have a friendly fight?" Kairi suggested.
Prince Zuko's eyes blinked.
" No elemental bending. Just an ordinary fight with our fists and legs," Kairi punched her left hand with her right hand.
" Hn. Sure," Prince Zuko nodded.
" Lead the way," Kairi walks out of her bedroom and follows Prince Zuko into a hallway to the deck.
