Ch. 12 Do you trust me?
Kairi exited Prince Zuko's bedroom and headed towards her room. As she walked, she looked at the burn scars on her right leg. The wounds had always haunted her because it reminded her of the day her mother got killed.
" Mama!" A young Kairi screams and runs towards her mother's body, hugging her tightly.
Yon Rha stared blankly at young Kairi, who hugged her mother's body tightly.
" I might as well start disposing of all of your bodies. Cannot risk you lot rising from the dead." He says, turning around and beginning to burn the tent with his Fire, not caring that a child was inside.
" Kairi! Watch out!" A voice called out, bringing Kairi to reality.
Kairi winced when she bumped her head against the metal door. She turned and saw Iroh looking at her worryingly.
" Are you okay?" Iroh asked, his eyes glancing at the burns on Kairi's right leg before looking at her in the eyes.
" Yeah. I'm fine. I was, um, daydreaming." Kairi awkwardly laughed while rubbing the back of her neck with her right hand.
" How was your conversation with my nephew? I hope he didn't give you a cold shoulder. I could scold him for you. He should know better when it comes to treating a lady." Iroh firmly says, but Kairi could see the glee in his eyes, meaning he was joking around.
Kairi stayed quiet, remembering her conversation with Prince Zuko.
" Kairi. I want to, um. Say that I am sorry for nearly burning your face earlier." Prince Zuko apologized, even though Kairi knew it was hard for him.
" He didn't give me the cold shoulder," Kairi reassured. " He apologized to me for what happened earlier. You know, with him almost burning my face and all." She says.
Iroh nodded.
" And between us, I revealed my burn scar to your nephew because I wanted to let him know that I wasn't pitying him and that I understand his pain." Kairi looks at the burn scars on her right leg.
Iroh looked at Kairi's burn scars, and his usual joyful eyes dimmed.
" I have always hated this scar because it reminded me of the day my mother died. But, as I got older. It became like a remembrance. The same with this necklace." Kairi lightly rubbed her mother's betrothed necklace with her right hand.
" It's like her memory will always live on with me." She looked at Iroh and sadly smiled.
Iroh opens his mouth to say something but gets cut off by the intercom.
" Change of temperature. We have left the South Pole." The intercom says.
Iroh and Kairi intently stared at one another.
" I can't believe it. It's my first time leaving my home country." Kairi turned to the metal door and put her hand on the handle. " I. Um. I'm going to rest. I'll see you around." She says, opening the door and entering her bedroom.
Iroh nodded, watching Kairi's bedroom door closed. His gaze saddened, feeling sorry for what the young girl had gone through.
His eyes blinked, remembering his only son, Lu Ten, saying those exact words as they left the Fire Nation.
" I can't believe it. It's my first time leaving my home country!" Lu Ten smiled, looking out the window from his bedroom on the ship.
" Lu Ten," Iroh whispered as a tear left his eyes. He turns around and walks away towards his bedroom to rest.
A few days later, the Fire Nation ship spotted land. Immediately, the intercom announced to everyone that they saw land.
Kairi, dressed in masculine red clothing with a belt around her waist to keep it from falling, walked out of her bedroom. She had the pants tailored where the right side revealed her burn scars.
" Good morning, Kairi." Iroh greeted, watching Kairi walk past him.
" Good morning!" Kairi shouted in response, heading towards the deck.
Iroh amusingly chuckled.
His eyes blinked when he heard the door beside him open. He turns and sees his nephew.
" Prince Zuko." He greeted.
Prince Zuko looked at his Uncle and nodded.
" Morning." He looked past his Uncle and saw Kairi heading towards the deck.
" Go. The Captain announced that we are close to land." Iroh chuckled when he saw his nephew look in the direction where Kairi was headed.
Prince Zuko walked towards the deck.
Iroh amusingly chuckled as he turned and headed towards the kitchen to make tea.
Kairi exited the ship and stepped onto the deck. The wind blows her long, wavy, dark hair that she styled into a ponytail. She lifted her head and saw seagulls flying towards the island's direction.
She looked at the island with curiosity. She didn't know why, but something within her soul burned as she stared at the island. It felt familiar to her, which confused her since she had never been to that island in her whole life.
" I need to get to that island." She whispered.
Her eyes blinked when she heard footsteps coming from behind her. She turns and sees Prince Zuko.
" Morning, Zuko." She greeted.
" Morning," Prince Zuko nodded.
Kairi looks back at the island.
" You know. There is a faster way for us to get to the island quicker. The ship can meet us up there." She says, looking at the island intently.
Prince Zuko stared at Kairi's back curiously.
" We are going to fly there," Kairi says as she gets on the railing.
Prince Zuko's eyebrows rose, and his eyes widened.
" Are you insane? Get down from there!" He shouted.
" I'll be fine," Kairi reassures, and she jumps, freaking Prince Zuko out.
" Kairi!" Prince Zuko shouted, holding his hand out, looking horrified as he watched Kairi jump towards the ocean.
Kairi bent the air to push her up toward the sky. She twirls, causing Prince Zuko to lift his head and watch her fly.
Prince Zuko's golden eyes intently stared at Kairi. He watched the morning sun shined upon her, complimenting her dark hair, tanned skin, and blue-grey eyes. Her red clothing made her look like a familiar Spiritual guardian from a folk tale his mother used to read to him when he was younger.
" The Painted Lady." His mother, Ursa, reads, showing an image of a beautiful maiden with dark hair, tanned skin, blue eyes, and tribal markings on her face. She was dressed in red garbs, helping citizens of a small Fire Nation Village.
A young Prince Zuko stared at the image in awe.
" She's pretty, Mama!" He smiled.
" I agree." Ursa nodded.
" Tell me more about her, Mama!" Young Prince Zuko looked at his mother.
" The Painted Lady is the benevolent spirit of the Jang Hui River, known for her protectiveness and healing abilities." Ursa reads while showing her son images of the spiritual guardian helping the sick and innocent.
" Many believed that The Painted Lady came to the Fire Nation from the North Pole. All she wanted to do was help people." Ursa says, looking at her son.
" However, the Fire Nation Army built a factory on the Jang Hui River in 90 AG and began polluting it by discharging its waste. This pollution drove The Painted Lady away, leaving the villagers to fend for themselves." She finished reading.
Young Prince Zuko frowned, not liking that a sweet spirit like the Painted Lady had disappeared because of the waste his kingdom had caused.
" I have decided that when I become Fire Lord. I shall destroy that Factory and bring clean water back to the river of that Village so that the Painted Lady can come back home." He looked at his mother with an adorable, determined gaze.
Ursa's gaze softened, and she hugged her son, giving him lots of affection, which caused the young boy to laugh.
" Hey, Zuko!" A feminine voice shouted, bringing Prince Zuko back to reality.
Prince Zuko's eyes blinked, and he noticed how happy and free Kairi looked when flying.
" Do you trust me?" Kairi asked, holding her hand out to Prince Zuko.
Prince Zuko held his hand out to Kairi.
Kairi grabbed Prince Zuko's hand and tightly grasped it. She flew back and used her strength to pull him towards her.
Prince Zuko raised and looked, realizing he was floating in the air.
" Don't drop me!" He glares, holding Kairi's hand tightly.
" I won't." Kairi giggled, pulling Prince Zuko close, wrapping her arm around his waist, surprising him. She looked away and started to fly towards the direction of the mysterious island.
Iroh watched everything unfold with a fond gaze. He hummed, thinking that Kairi would be a positive influence in his nephew's life.
