I hadn't expected to wake up three days later to find my beloved cat Salem dead on the kitchen floor. I knew something was wrong as neither Salem or Rex had come to me for breakfast. Curious I went over to see what I assumed was a sleeping pair,only Salem didn't wake up. When I saw that he wasn't breathing I took him straight to the vets, where I was told Salem had had a massive heart attack during the night.

It was hard enough being away from my uncle and close friends and now Salem was gone too. Even though Rex and Salem where really close,Rex stayed with me as much as he could following Salem's passing. On Saturday afternoon I was doing a routine walk threw the park,when a member of the public told me about a dog under the pavilion.

I made my way to the pavilion and sure enough sitting there on the floor is a German Shepard puppy. I checked the dog over and from what I could see the dog is healthy but alone. Underneath the puppy which I saw is male,is a piece of paper with writing on it. I picked up the paper which read' please take care of this puppy his name is Loki'. I looked down at Loki as he looked up at me.

I took off the lead that is tied around Loki's neck,picked up the puppy and made my way back to the vets. The little guy seemed fine to me,but I had to be sure that he is healthy on the inside and see if he has a micro chip. I went back to the vets on Monday to see how Loki is doing and the vet told me that he has no health problems and had no microchip either.

"Can I take him home?" I ask the vet
"So soon after Salem" the vet said
"The little guy doesn't deserve to be in a kennel and Rex could do with a new set of ears to help him" I say
"If you're sure you want him,then you can have him. Just remember if Rex doesn't take to him then don't force it" the vet reminds me
"I know" I say,I bring Loki home with me after my shift that day.

I walk into my front room and see Rex laying down on the floor,he looks up as I approach him
"Now Rex I know you miss your brother Salem,and you probably don't want a new one just yet. But we both know you need the extra help" I say to Rex,I then place Loki down on the floor close to Rex and step back to watch the interaction. Loki goes straight over to Rex to say hello,but Rex doesn't even acknowledge him.

"Rex be nice to Loki,he was left on his own just like you" I say to the sheepdog,Rex turns his head and looks at Loki as the puppy tries again to play with the older dog. Whilst the two dogs got to know each other,I made their food for them. I knew it won't be easy for Rex to except Loki in the house and it would be hard for me as well,but I'm sure with time Loki would win us over.
