Chapter 53
"Are you going to tell me where we are staying now?" I ask Lana, for the tenth time. We are currently waiting for a cab at the airport, a cab that is taking longer than suppose to.
"Wait." she tells me playfully, looking away after and focusing back on her phone screen.
"If you're going to murder me just tell me now. Please." she laughs.
"I'm not going to murder you!" she says. "Not yet at least." she mutters afterwards. Growing frustrated, I whine, throwing my head back and throwing a small fit like a child would before pretending to be dead on the bench. I somewhat know this will catch the attention of people, but I don't care what so ever.
"Sorry, she hasn't had her nap yet." Lana says aloud to the people who I have caught the attention of I assume.
"Get up our cabs here." Lana jabs the side of my stomach and I jolt up.
"Ow." I rub at my side.
"Sorry." she smiles. I stare her down and she smiles wider. "C'mon get up!"
I flick my eyes away from her and get my backpack off the bench. I throw the straps over my shoulder and pick up my single suitcase, following Lana toward the cab afterward. The cab driver offers to put my suitcase in the trunk and smile, thanking him. I go into the back seat and wait for both the cab driver and Lana, tapping the barrier in the cab that separates the driver and passengers. Is being a cab driver in Jersey that dangerous? There is a small like square which you can slide if you please to talk to the driver, but it seems like only the driver can slide it.
When they finally get into the car the driver begins driving without saying a word and I assume Lana already gave him the directions to where my murder will be held. On the drive there I reply to some messages and take some pictures with my phone of what is outside. Lana tells me little things about Jersey, how she has lovely memories here. Her eyes light up when she tells me fond memories and all I can do is watch and listen intently, loving how she blushes and smiles and explains with such happiness. The mood grows bittersweet when she refers to her ex, but I only give her hand a reassuring squeeze. I have listened to her music, released and unreleased. I know how in love she was, whether it was with that one certain man or others. It's her past, and I accept all of it. What she had told and even what she hasn't.
After what felt like a short drive, we arrive at a quaint motel. I don't really know what I was expecting really, but this would have been it if I was really trying to guess. It just screams Lana.
"Motel. Interesting." I say once out the cab. The kind driver helps take out our luggage and Lana pays him after he sets our suitcases down. He drives off soon afterward and Lana turns to me
"I'm going to go check in, i'll be quick." I nod and watch her as she walks away toward the front desk. I whip out my phone from my pocket when I feel it vibrate and see it is in fact a call, and not a text.
"Hello?" I answer.
"Cara!" my older sisters voice booms enthusiastically.
"Hey Pop, whats happening?" I rest all my weight on my left leg and set my elbow on the window.
"Where are you?" she questions.
"What do you mean?" I ask confused.
"I mean," she teases. "Where. Are. You. I've been knocking on your door for minutes. I probably look like a mad woman."
"Wait wait wait, you're in Artenia? At the house?"
"Way to piece it together Sherlock. Now where are you?" Oh no.
"Umm.." I trail off. "I'm in.. Jersey."
"Jersey's subs?" she refers to the sub shop in the main part of town.
"Um.. , no. New Jersey." the other end of the line is silent for a few moments.
"Are you shitting me?" she finally says. I muster an awkward laugh.
"Um, no."
"What the fuck Cara! Why didn't you tell me?!" she complains.
"I'm sorry Pop, you're the one who is making surprise visits!"
"So it's a crime to miss and want to surprise my little sister?" she exclaims. "Why in the bloody hell are you even in Jersey anyway?"
It takes me some time to reply.
"Well I-- I came with.. someone."
"Who?" she asks immediately.
"My... girl- friend." I stutter.
"YOUR GIRLFRIEND?!" the volume of her voice hurts my ear drum. "SINCE WHEN IN THE HELL DO YOU HAVE A GIRLFRIEND!? I DIDNT EVEN KNOW YOU WERE TALKING TO SOMEONE!"
"I know Poppy-- but really, it was complicated I--"
"You never mentioned someone once, not even when you were back in England!" she is someone calmer now and I am grateful.
"I'm sorry Pop, but it was complicated. You're actually the first person to know we are a couple." I try to make it better. I didn't tell any of my family members I fancied someone while I was back in England let alone was 'talking' to someone. It really was complicated.
"Mmm." is all my older sister says for a few moments before asking, "Who is she?"
Should I say? I don't know if Lana wants to go public. What the hell am I thinking this is my sister for crying out loud.
"Lana." I finally say.
"She is as pretty as her name I assume?" my sister asks and I smile.
"More."
"I expect nothing less. When am I meeting this Lana of yours?" I look up and see Lana is making her way towards me already.
"Soon I hope. I have to go, we'll chat later."
"You owe me for not telling me you weren't in Artenia." she says.
"Do not. Bye Pop." I say before hanging up.
"Bye." I end the call and shove my phone into my pocket once again, just before Lana reaches me.
"Who were you talking to?" she asks curiously.
"My sister." I answer. "Got the key?"
She holds it up. "Right here. Room 12."
"My number." I smile, taken aback. She smiles and takes her suitcase, beginning to lead the way. She opens the door once we reach the room and I set my suitcase down by the door, looking at the room in surprise.
"What do you think?" she asks. I continue to look around, surprised by how big the room is for a motel, and how nice. I can already tell this is not your average motel
"It's lovely." I smile. "How'd you find this place?" she gives a small smile and shrug and I know she wasn't the one who discovered the place, but was more of introduced to it by another. I let myself fall onto the mattress and am surprised at how soft it is.
"God." I let out appreciatively. I hear her laugh and feel her lay right beside me on the mattress. I feel her lips come in contact with mine and open my eyes then, watching her face as she pulls away.
"I have so much in store for you."
An:
Short, I know. Wanted to get the arriving out of the way.
