Chapter 17

Cara's POV

As I finish paying for the two new books, I deny the cashiers request to give me a recite. I give her a smile and a friendly goodbye before walking out of the bookstore and heading over to where I left my cycle.

I unlock the lock keeping my cycle to the cycle racks and put the security wrap and lock in the front basket along with my books before getting on my beach cruiser and starting my route home. I always consider getting a car, but then always decided not to. I love riding my cycle and feeling the wind in my hair. It sounds hippyish of me but I feel closer to the earth, and, it helps the environment.

I feel a vibration from my back shorts pocket and get my phone out. It's a text message. From Chuck.

'Can you hear the screaming?'

With it comes an image. It's her, taking a picture with a crowd. She's making a screaming face and is covering her ears. I laugh lightly and I look up, seeing a clear sidewalk. I take both hands off the handles and type out a quick reply and then put the phone back into my pocket when I finish, placing my hands back onto the handles. Just in time to make the left I needed to.

It has almost been 3 weeks since Lana and Chuck were in Artenia, and Chuck and I have kept in touch, like we said we would. We text mostly but once in a while we call. Chatting. Saying what we're doing or have been up to. I like Chuck, she's easy and fun to talk to. It has really been an unexpected friendship of sorts. When we chat I try not to mention Lana, but she occasionally comes up. When I bring her up it's usually just to be polite. I ask Chuck how she is doing or Chuck brings her up when I ask her what she is doing. She has been with Lana for this entire miny tour so it's only rational that she will say she's with her when I ask. I change the subject almost immediately when she comes up though, if I can.

Whenever Lana comes up I feel awkward. Things hadn't exactly ended with prancing in a meadow the last time I was with her and Chuck knows this. Whenever Chuck and I are talking on the phone I can hear her sometimes. Talking or laughing in the background, or maybe just coming in. Chuck says it's a friend when she asks who she is talking to or ends the call for my sake, she knows how I feel about this whole situation. It's quite funny. I'd never thought I would be in a secret relationship with Lana Del Rey's sister, keeping it a secret from Lana Del Rey. I find it quite humorous.

I make the last turn of my route and pull up onto the driveway, swiftly sliding off of my cruiser. I walk it off and swing my pack over my shoulder. I take the garage remote out from my pack and push the button, walking in the garage after the door rolls open. I take my books out from the basket and leave my bike against a wall of boxes and click the button to close the garage once the cycle is steady. I greet Mia once I go through the door leading from the garage and into the house and start walking towards to kitchen.

"Are you hungry Mia? Huh? Are you girl? Are you?" I play with her. She starts wagging her tail even faster and starts jumping on me. I set the books down on a table and grab her face in between hands as she licks my face.

"Well c'mon. C'mon!" I continue walking towards the kitchen and she follows. I get two scoops of her food and pour them into her bowl. I make eye contact with her making sure she is relaxed and then put her bowl down so she can eat, petting her head afterwards. I open up a cabinet and get some licorice to munch on. I don't know how to cook anything besides toast and bake beans so that results in my not particularly good eating habits. I usually eat out or whip up something if I can, but mostly out really. Like McDonalds. I suck in my breath in awe. McDonalds.

I feel a vibration in my back pocket again before I start walking up the stairs. I leave a licorice in my mouth and pull out my phone from my back pocket, seeing it is a call.

"Hey Chuck." I turn on the lights once reaching the top, even though there's no need. It's 2:46 in the afternoon. I turn them off again.

"Cara, Cara!" she yells.

"Yes babe, I can hear you." I say.

I walk into my bedroom and sit at the foot of the bed, kicking off my shoes.

"Oh! I can barely hear you!" she says. I laugh and move my phone to hold in between my shoulder and ear. My left shoe is being difficult and does not want to come off of my foot, so this calls for drastic measures.

"Are you still at the concert?" I ask.

"Yes, but it's about done."

"Really." I say, falling onto my back. Trying to pull off my shoe. I roll a bit to the right and continue to try and take off my shoe, but it's like it is glued to my foot.

"Cara what are you doing?" she asks, not yelling anymore.

"Trying to take off my shoe." I grunt. "Agh!" I pull.

"Did you try untying the laces?" she asks. I huff and let go of my foot. I take in a breath and untie the knot from my laces, easily slipping off my shoe afterwards.

"Got it." I tell her. I hear her laugh and I do as well, running the back of my hand over my forehead. Whoo. That was a workout.

"Cara." she laugh. "Really?"

I laugh with her and gather my hair up to tie into a bun at the top of my head as I walk over to my drawers to get some boxers.

"Why'd you call me babe?" I laugh.

I take my phone and put it on speaker, setting it on top of the drawer as I pull my shorts down and pull my shirt over my head.

"Oh, right. I'm going to be in L.A in about a week after I finish that project I was telling you about, you remember which one right?" she asks.

"Yes, babe. Go on." I pull on my boxer shorts and take off my bra, pulling my tee over my head again.

"Well if it wasn't for that I would be there this week, but I'll be there next week for sure. Would you be up to coming down to L.A?"

WHAT.

"Come down.. to L.A?"

Lana's POV

"You guys were so amazing, I had been wanting to do a show here in New York for a while now so," screams. "A perfect way to end this.. miny tour."

I smile and nod as they scream, looking at the faces in the crowd.

"Well we have one last song for you." they aw in a complaining matter. "I know I know."

I look back at the band.

"This is a song from the new album, Born To Die The Paradise Edition." the screams get louder and I can't help but laugh.

"What's it called!!?" someone yells.

"This is.." I lean away from the mic a bit "Body Electric." they cheer and I nod at the band so they can start. They start to play and I count. 3, 2, 1.

"Elvis is my Daddy, Marilyn's my Mother, Jesus is my bestest friend."

I finish the show by going into the crowd again to greet and thank the crowd one last time before going backstage to quickly collect my things. It's still early and I want to go to Coney Island before leaving tomorrow for L.A.

"Where's Chuck?" I ask to anyone who will answer.

"Um, she went back there." the stage manager tells me.

"Oh okay, thank you." I walk away and walk over to where the stage manager pointed.

I see Chuck with her phone to her ear, her camera hanging off of her shoulder and her hand caressing her chin. I see her laugh as I walk closer and listen a bit before saying anything to her.

"Did you try untying the laces?" I hear her ask. Who is she talking to?

"Cara," she laughs. "Really?"

I freeze. Cara? Why is she talking to Cara? Then I start to think, how she would hang up her phone when I would walk in to where she was. How when I would ask who she was talking to or texting she would just say 'a friend' instead of saying that friend's name, which she always does. I never thought anything of it, and I am just realizing how stupid that was. Are they what, dating?

"Yes I'm serious, come down to L.A!"

"Who are you talking to Chuckie?" I cut in. She turns around startled. I arch an eyebrow and she stares at me with her mouth agape. I can hear Cara talking on the other end of the line from where I am standing.

"Cara, yeah um, I'll call you back. Yeah, yeah- it's just.. yeah. Yeah okay. Okay, bye." She ends the call and continues to look at me.

"Well."

"Cara." she says.

"Cara." I repeat. "Why."

I can tell she feels uncomfortable.

"Just, talking." she says.

"Why?" I ask.

"Uhhh," she stalls. "Um.."

"Are you two dating or fooling around or?"

"What?!" she asks.

"Well you seem really secretive and like you don't know what to say so I just thought-"

"Lizzy." she stops me. "Listen to yourself. Doesn't that sound ridiculous? I have a boyfriend, that I'm very much in love with, thank you very much."

I take this in.

"Well why else would you be-"

"Have you ever heard of this little thing called a friendship? Yeah it's this thing where you enjoy someone for who they are and enjoy spending time with them, but you don't fuck them, yeah it's amazing. You should try it sometime."

I squint at her.

"Very funny."

She starts walking away and towards the back exit of the venue. I follow after her and continue my questioning.

"Then why were you keeping this a secret from me?" she looks bluntly at me and then away.

"You know why Lana."

"No, I don't." I hear her sigh.

"You don't want anything to do with her. Not since you didn't get her."

"That isn't true." I protest. She looks over at me.

"Alright maybe a little, but you didn't have to keep this from me."

"Yes, I did. Look at how you're reacting. it bothers you I know it." I don't say anything. I know she's right. We exit through the back and start walking over to the van. I try to think of a way to mention what I heard about Cara coming to L.A without it being weird, but I cant. So I just spit it out.

"Is she coming?" we get in the van. "To L.A, I mean."

She looks back at me and takes her seat.

"Eavesdrop much?" she asks.

"Where to?" Jorge interrupts. Chuck pulls out her phone and I look over at Jorge.

"Just go up to the front of the venue Jorge, I'm going to say hi to fans for a while." I say.

"You got it." he starts driving and I look back at Chuck.

"Well." I say. She rolls her eyes and puts her phone down on the seat, taking out her camera and starting to film.

"Yes, Lizzy, she is. There, are you happy now?"

No, I think to myself. I am not happy. I thought I would never see Cara again, and that's what made it easier when I would keep thinking about her. Everyday since that Sunday she would find a way to creep into my mind, and it was extremely frustrating. I don't know why I can't stop thinking about her, but I can't. There's something about her that just draws me in, and I don't know what it is. Every show I would think I would see her in the crowd, and that would result in me almost tripping or messing up lyrics trying to see it was really her. Of course, it never was. Every time I got close enough to see or after I saw if it was her I would almost trip, then look back up to where I thought I saw her only to realize that my mind was tricking me. I didn't know what it meant when it would happen, and I still don't.

The car pulls up in front of the venue, stopping my train of thought. I look out the window and see fans waiting in the front of the venue. I get my bag off of my lap and put it aside before sliding open the door, some see me and begin to scream. This only makes the others looking to the front turn and realize where I am, letting the real screams begin.

"Hey!" I wave to all of them. They reply by screaming my name and I smile at them. Chuck gets out before me and starts walking toward the fans to take video of them. This is my chance, I think to myself. I look one last time at Chuck and see her occupied, walking by the crowd and recording them. I turn then and check if her phone is still on the seat. It is. I pick it up and slide the lock screen, only to see that she has a password.

"Fuck." I mutter. Wait. This is Chuck. I type in 1 2 3 4 and laugh to myself when the screen unlocks. I quickly get my phone out from my bag and go to her contacts, hurriedly typing in Cara's phone number into my phone. I get tempted to see some of the messages between them but think better of it. I don't have much time. I get out of her contacts delete her history so it is clear again and put her phone back to where it was and quickly shove my phone back into my bag. I turn around and see Chuck still filming the crowd. I close the door and adjust my dress afterward, it having gone to the side a bit. I walk over to my fans and smile at Chuck when she turns to look over at me.
