(7) Mother

I stared up at the hole in the ceiling that Hana had made.

"Reckless." I sighed, though a small smile seemed to creep upon my face. As my mind returned to the situation at hand, the smile morphed into a serious straight line. I had to find my mother, but I had no clue where to look first. "Maybe Grandmother would know."

I pulled out my cell phone and immediately dialed her number. Waiting for her to pick up, I hoped that she was okay.

"Hello? Joe?" Her scratchy, elderly voice sprung from my phone.

"Grandma, Do you know where I can find my mother. It's important." I tried to sound as urgent as possible.

"Yes, I do." She then foretold me all of the information that I required. I thanked her before hanging up the phone and shoving it back into my pocket.

I buttoned up my shirt to hide my super suit before running off to the nearest bus station. I dreaded public transit, but this was currently the only and fastest option available.

As I waited for the bus to arrive, a mother with two small children walked up to the bus stop too. They looked happy together and they somewhat reminded me of how life was before Night Shade broke mother, Hana, and I up. I smiled as the little boy helped his mother by pushing his little sister in the stroller. I then wondered to myself if I had ever done such for Hana.

As the bus arrived, I stepped back to let the mother and her children board the bus first. When it was my turn, I stepped into the bus and dug into my pockets for some change. I felt a slight shiver down my back as the bus driver stared me down till I deposited the change into the box.

"Do you need a ticket?" His rough voice shook me, I shook my head and looked down.

"No thank you, sir." I replied before dashing to the back of the bus and taking a vacant seat.

I got off at my stop and walked along the sidewalk till I came across an old little cottage. After reading the sign numbers, I pressed gently against the old, rusted, gate, swinging it open as I passed through the opening that I made.

My heart began to thump quickly as I slowly approached the door. I had always dreamed of what my mother would look like or be like, most of my memories of her were faded or long gone due to her absence in my life.

As I stood about a foot away from the door, I gulped, swallowing a pool of saliva. I slowly reached my hand out to the door and knocked.

Knock Knock Knock

My fist pounded against the wooden cottage door firmly yet gently. A muffled female's voice sounded from the other side before the door swung open.

"I'm sorry, I'm not interested in anything that you're selling." She spoke quickly as she leaned against the door frame. For a moment I must have looked like an idiot, as I stood there just staring at her. "Yeah... Goodbye." She moved to slam the door in my face, but I used my psychokineisis to force it back open again.

"Sorry, Please, don't slam the door on me. I- I need your help." I pleaded for her to listen.

"Why do you need my help? Is this some kind of scam, look kid, I don't know what you're playing at, but you don't want to mess with me." She spoke in an angry tone. I know where Hana gets her attitude from now. A smirk appeared upon my face, but quickly vanished as I returned to the situation at hand.

"Can I come in?" I asked, not really wanting to explain it outside.

"No, you may not." She hissed, I could clearly tell that she was not amused by my presence. I wondered how she was going to react when I explained the situation to her.

"Fine. I'm your son, and Nightshade is going to destroy the world as we know it if you don't come with me to help my sister Hana and I defeat Nightshade." I blurted everything out. She just stared at me for a moment.

"...And you're high...." She went to slam the door in my face again, except I caught it before it closed and forced it open. I then forced myself into the house without warning.

"Look! You're my mom and my sister needs your help! I am not going to sit her and watch her be torn away from me again! Now are you going to help me or not?!?" I yelled a bit louder than I should have.

"Alright, I'll help you, geez. You're as stubborn as my mother in-law." She sighed, grabbing her car keys and shooing me out of the house. "But we'll need a plan if we're going to defeat Nightshade. I'm a little rusty with my powers, and I won't be able to protect you while focusing on my powers."

"You don't have to worry about me," I explained as I hopped into her car. "I'm Mindlocke. Ever hear about me?"

"Yeah, I heard you broke the town's oldest statue on your first day." She laughed as my cheeks burned with embarrassment.

"Hey! I was just starting out! And it was the villain's fault!" I crossed my arms as she drove to my instructions.

"Chill kid, it's alright. Everything will be alright." She ran her fingers through my hair before ruffling it and messing up my perfectly combed mane.

"Save me Mindlocke." Hana's voice erupted into my head.

"Hana?" I turned around, the room was empty and dimly lit. "Mom?" I called out as she seemed to have vanished too.

I was alone. I was alone in a pitch black room.

"Save me Mindlocke." Hana's voice grew louder as I ventured deeper into the darkness.

I walked till I came across a wall that was made entirely of reflective material so it came across as being a giant mirror.

"What is this?" I looked up at its glory, reaching my hand out to touch it. As my finger, made impact, a bright light engulfed me and everything went blank.
