Chapter 6

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Logan grunted as his knees came in contact with the ground. His hands were freed and the bag over his head was yanked off. He blinked twice before opening them and turned immediately to check on Cassie who was on the ground beside him.
The two armed men had walked out immediately and shut them in.
"Hey..." Logan tried to get Cassie's attention. He shifted carefully towards her. "Are you okay?" He asked with a quiet voice.
She eyed him with a frown on her face before getting up and walking towards the bed. She lay on it staring up at the very dim light bulb on the ceiling.
"Cassie." Logan walked towards her. "We need to talk."
She did not even blink. It was as though he was completely non-existent.
"You are seriously going to ignore me after dragging me into this mess?" He asked with his hands on his hips as he glared at her.
She offered neither a sigh nor a stir.
"What exactly is your problem? Why on earth do you have to act like a teenager every God damn time. You're a grown woman for crying out loud. Act the part! See what you have done. I have to throw away my hard-earned money because of you! You keep drinking, gambling, making terrible decisions, and being completely stupid and reckless!"
"Shut up!" Cassie yelled, leaving him dumbstruck.
She sat up on the bed and finally reached him with her eyes. Her face was devoid of emotion, yet frightening. It reminded him so much of his mother.
In some funny way, he could always perceive some sort of resemblance between them. That had possibly birthed his inexorable attraction towards Cassie.
His soon-to-be ex-wife, got up from the bed, her brown eyes watching him intently. "How soon is that bitch going to get here?" She asked.
"You mean Natasha..." He paused, watching to see a reaction on her face.
"I mean the one-night-stand that's suddenly our only hope of making it out of here, alive." She glowered and folded her arms across her chest.
"She's not... She's not a one-night-stand," he replied.
Cassie scoffed. "Oh, what is she now? Your girlfriend? Is she the reason you want me gone so badly? The both of you are getting married or something?" She raised her brows, enquiringly.
"That is none of your business. How is it even relevant to this conversation?"
"It sure as hell is relevant. I need to know if she's someone we can trust. Five million is no joke. She could get it and just disappear," Cassie indicated with a snap of her finger.
Logan swallowed hard, willing himself to believe Natasha would not  do that to him. She was in love with him and they had a great situationship.
"Well... I trust her. But it might have been better if you didn't go attacking her this morning like an unleashed, mad dog."
"I hate you for stopping me."
"And I hate you for constantly acting like you're crazy. You stabbed that man in the face!" Logan shrugged, pointing at the door. He still found it hard to believe that she could do something like that. "What the hell were you doing with a weapon like that?"
"My penknife? I got that because of you." A small smile played on her lips. "I use it to stab you in my mind every night. It puts me to sleep. Unfortunately, it had to hit the wrong target first."
Logan's mouth hung open as he watched her. "You are insane," his voice came out merely as a whisper mostly because he was out of breath.
She chuckled and cat-walked right past him with a gentle flip of her raven black hair.
Logan took two deep breaths to summon enough courage. She'd pushed him beyond his limits. He veered and followed her. "What exactly is your problem? What the hell is wrong with you?"
He caught up with her and took hold of her hand, turning her so she could face him. Her proximity was daunting and even though she was glaring at him, he wanted nothing more than to hold her until she found reasons to love him again.
"I'm sick and tired of you acting like this. You need to face me and talk to me. Tell me what the fuck it is that I did to you!" Frustration ran through his veins.
"Let go of me!" Cassie snatched her hand out of his grip, though maintaining eye contact.
"Even that crazy Flame thinks there's something you have to say that I need to listen to. I'm standing right here and demanding that you start talking!" He ran his hands through his hair, feeling nervous and agitated.
Logan tried to get hold of Cassie again but she stepped back to avoid it.
"Start talking, Cassie. Talk to me! Tell me what the fuck I did to you. I need to know! How the hell did I wind up as your enemy? How did we get here?"
"You left me!"
The both of them stopped on their tracks to catch their breaths. There were thousands of emotions dancing through their eyes; passion, anger, and pain taking the centre stage.
Logan shook his head. "I did not leave you, Cassie."
"Yes, you did. You asked me for a divorce after cheating on me repeatedly. But let's keep acting like I'm the bad person here. The one that has no heart! Let us assume that is me and not you, Mr. Perfect."
"Cassie..." He tried to place his hands on her upper arm but she took another step back and her breath hitched as she came in contact with the door. She had to stop.
"Don't you dare try to touch me," she uttered the words pointedly. Her voice was at least an octave lower, laced with anger and disdain.
"You think I wanted any of that to happen? I didn't know what else to do because I was helplessly in love with a woman that did not love me anymore." He sighed in frustration.
"And that is why you handed divorce papers to me right after we had great sex. Does that sound familiar to you, Logan? Like a replay of our first time. Your mind seems to tell you, 'just have sex with Cassie and dump her like the trash that she is,' doesn't it?"
"Those are completely different scenarios. Back then we were young and stupid."
"And up till now, we're just old and stupid. Nothing's changed. I deluded myself, trying so hard to believe that we could make something good out of this dangerous, lustful relationship that we have. But time and time again, all I achieve by staying with you is hurting the people that I love!"
"The fact that you're making yourself out to be the victim and blaming me for all your problems... our problems, is completely baffling!"
"Maybe it's because you are the cause of it all!" She yelled, pointing at him.
Logan turned away from Cassie and took a few steps forward before stopping and motioning to face her again. "I wish I could feel sorry for cheating on you or asking you for a divorce, but I don't. You shut me out. You left me sad and angry and desperate. If our entire marriage was based on lust for you, that was not the case for me. I didn't need a woman to have sex with, I needed a wife I could at the very least communicate with." He placed his hands on his forehead.
"No. You needed a dummy that you could dump your bullshit conversations on. I was sick and tired of being that dummy. I was sick and tired of listening to you go on and on and on about your perfect life. Not after everything you put me through!"
Logan shook his head. "My life is not perfect. It has never been. I was hurt and broken just as much as you. And the things that I had to say... The things that needed to be said, you forbade me from speaking about them. I listened to you. I did what you wanted and now you're standing here and throwing blames at me. How the hell can you blame me for what happened to our children?" He roared in anger.
"No!" Cassie yelled.
Logan knew he was stepping over the boundaries, going too far. But he'd had enough of playing by Cassie's rules. Sticking to them had done him no good.
Luckily for him, right now, she had nowhere to run.
"It is about time we talked about this because I would not have you put this on me. I did my best!" He said moving even closer.
"No!" Cassie reiterated, placing her hands on her ears. She tried to get away but he was standing right in front of her, obstructing her path.
She was stuck between facing the hideous reality of their past and a firmly shut metal door with no way out.
Cassie turned towards the door and began banging on it incessantly.
"Flame, please! Get me out of here!" She begged as tears began to form in her eyes.
"We were supposed to get through it together, not hate each other," Logan said moving even further till there was almost no inch left between them.
Cassie was relentless in her ordeal to secure Flame's attention. She could care less if it would result in another gunshot or even worse. All she wanted was for Logan to stop.
"Flame, please," She begged. "Please..."
"I understand your pain because I felt it too-"
"No, you don't!" Cassie turned and yelled with all her might. "You understand nothing! Why did you come back for me? Why did you get me pregnant again even though I begged you not to? You are a selfish bastard that just wanted to control my life. I am so stupid. I have always been a fool for you," she said as tears filled her eyes and streamed down her cheeks.
Logan's mouth hung open. He could not believe how far Cassie could accuse him. "That is not true."
"I'm sick and tired of your lies and deception!"
He shook his head as he placed his hands on her upper arm. "If you so badly did not want to have him, why didn't you tell me? It would've..." He paused.
Cassie wiggled out of his grip and walked past him further into the room. "It would've?" Her voice came out as a barely audible whisper.
He rested his head against the door because he could not afford to see her. There was very little left to the imagination of how devastated she was. "Maybe it would've been easier... Maybe if we had only one hard nut to crack, it wouldn't have been so... Hard." He shivered as he muttered the final word with tears in his eyes.
"They're not nuts... They're my children and because of you I lost them." She buried her face in her palms.
Logan turned to face her with so much pain in his eyes that he made no effort to hide. "They're my children too and I gave everything! It tears my heart to pieces that you'd think I'm responsible for the fact that Lucia left or Cameron..." He closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
"Died." Cassie folded her arms against her chest and her angry eyes, glared at him. "Cameron died."
