CHAPTER SEVEN
WARNING FOR ACCIDENTAL MISGENDEDING AND BRIEF PANIC ATTACKS.
"is this really necessary?" Pitou complained as Y/N pulled a hood over their head, and put a pull-over face mask just above the bridge of their nose.
"Yes. There's going to be alot of people and Hunters there, some of which may recognize you. I don't want them to attack you, or kill you, so you gotta put all this stuff on." She adjusted the pull-over, before patting their outfit down, then putting a pair of dark sunglasses over their eyes.
"OK, we're good to go."
She then opened the car door, getting out, then waiting for Pitou to get out with her.
They met up with Y/N's mom half way, and begun their walk.
As all three of them approached the rather large building that was the Hunters Association Headquarters building, where the election would take place, Pitou got a sinking feeling in their stomach.
Immediately they recognized some of the people standing out front, and kept their head down.
As they all got to the doors, a man wearing a black suit and sunglasses stopped them.
He scanned Pitou over, then turned his gaze to Livia.
"I apologise ma'am, but your daughter is going to have to remove her mask and jacket. We can't have a risk of someone sneaking weapons into the election."
Pitou could feel their chest tighten, an odd feeling in their stomach.
They didn't like being referred to as a girl.
Livia glanced over at Pitou, trying to figure out how to respond, but Y/N beat her to it.
"I'm sorry sir, but my sibling here has a very rare skin disease that makes them extremely vulnerable to sunlight, so they can't take this off, I'm very sorry."
Before the officer could respond, Y/N grabbed both Pitou and Livia's hand and rushed inside the building.
Once they were all far enough from the entrance, they slowed down to a walk.
"Y/N?" Pitou came up beside the girl and stuffed their hands into the pocket of the hoodie.
She turned her head, making a "hm?" sound.
"When that man called me she and her, it made me feel... Weird. Like, the bad weird. Made me feel upset. Why?"
Y/N just sighed sympathetically.
"It's cause he didn't use your correct pronouns, which I can't blame him for because he didn't know them, but regardless, being misgendered kinda hurts. Now, there are some people who don't care, but for some like you and... Sometimes me, it stings."
Pitou furrowed their eyebrows.
"What are your pronouns, then?"
Y/N shrugged nonchalantly.
"She/her, but I've been questioning lately if maybe I should try other pronouns. I've also been mistaken as a boy before, because I'm not really into feminine clothing."
Pitou made a noise of acknowledgement, staying silent until they all reached some kind of auditorium.
Y/N gestured to the seats.
"Me and my mom have to stand in line, and it's kinda long, so it might be awhile, so you can sit down if you want."
She then handed them her phone.
"I don't have a password on it, and I don't really use social media cuz I barley have any friends, so you can use this. Watch a few videos or something, keep yourself entertained for a bit, just don't delete any photos or anything."
Pitou nodded, them took the phone, sitting down in a seat closest to the stairs.
As they quietly watched what seemed to be cat videos on Y/N's phone, they felt a sickening presence. It was suffocating, and full of unchecked bloodlust.
Their ruby eyes glanced up ever so slightly from behind the sunglasses, and were met with piercing gold iris's from the bottom of the seats closest to the floor.
They held eye contact with the man for a few seconds, before he smirked at them and licked his lips, taking a seat with his back turned to them.
'OK, that was... Unsettling.' they thought.
The way that man stared at them made them uncomfortable. Realistically, they knew they could easily kill him with just a slash of their claws, even without Nen, but they've been trying to hold back on killing people ever since they were put into the custody of Y/N and her mom. Not just because the Counsel would kill them for it, but because they wanted to be better. They wanted to be a better person- or as much of a person as they could be.
Pitou turned Y/N's phone off and put it into the pocket of the hoodie they were wearing. Leaning back into their seat, they closed their eyes and took a deep breath, bringing their hands up and rubbing their eye lids from under the sun glasses.
Being in a large room full of Hunters made them antsy. They could easily be recognized and killed. Again.
They held their head in their hands, sensing a presence beside them, and glanced to their left.
Immediately, they tensed. It was the same man from a few minutes ago.
He smiled innocently at them.
"May I sit here?" He asked, pointing to the seat next to them.
They stared up at him, their red and yellow eyes meeting gold once again.
They hesitated, wanting to ignore him or tell him to go away, but they decided to be nice, even if it was a weird experience for them.
They nodded, and eyed the man as he sat down, crossing one of his legs over the other.
"No need to be suspicious." The man said with a chuckle. "I'm mearly sitting beside a person who looked rather lonely. Are you here by yourself?"
Pitou didn't know whether they should answer him or not. This man didn't seem like he had the best intentions.
Thankfully, they didn't have to, because someone else did it for them.
"Hisoka, leave them alone and go bother some child. They're not interested in fighting you so you can get off."
'That voice...' Pitou thought, clenching their hands from inside the pocket of the hoodie.
They turned their head, instantly being met with blue eyes and white hair.
The hair on the back of their neck instantly stood on edge. What was this kid's name? They knew him, and had seen him momentarily when they had to heal Komugi, but they couldn't recall his name.
He looked exhausted, like he had been awake for hours on end.
The man beside them -now refered to as Hisoka- let out a hum as he stared the boy down.
"Killua, always so good to see you. Tell me, how's Gon?"
Pitou bristled.
'Gon...'
The same boy who had killed them, threatened Komugi's life when they were trying to save her, the one who's mentor they couldn't bring back to life.
Killua approached Pitou and Hisoka, hands in the pockets of his purple shorts.
"Still in Intensive Care. He's dying."
There was an... Edge in Killua's voice, like he was trying to hide the fact that he was hurting.
Hisoka let out a faux sympathetic noise.
"Shame. I was really looking forward to fighting him someday, oh well."
Gon was... Dying? That didn't make any sense...
A buzzing noise sounded from Pitou's hoodie pocket, making them take out the phone in an attempt to distract themself from their wandering thoughts.
Mom:
"It's me, I'm texting you from my mom's phone. Do you need help?"
Pitou looked up, catching Y/N's eyes a few good feet away, and they subtly nodded.
Y/N returned the nod, turning to speak something to Livia, then walked towards them.
"Come stand in line, that way you won't be so bored."
Immediately, Pitou stood up, walking to her side, to which the slightly shorter girl wrapped an arm around their shoulders and led them away.
Y/N glanced at them as both of them approached Livia again, a concerned look on her face.
"Are you OK? You look like you've seen a ghost."
The Chimera Ant looked back to where Hisoka and Killua were, seeing that the older man had taken himself back to his seat in the front row, and the younger was leaving the auditorium.
They caught eyes with Killua when he had felt their stare, and ever so slightly, they saw his eyes widen before he hurriedly left.
It was only then that they noticed why.
Both Livia and Y/N were staring at them, as well as the whole auditorium, with uncomfortable or terrified looks on their faces.
Their Ren was slowly emitting from their body in a flickering, tentacle like way, in an anxious way, but it was hostile all the same.
Immediately, they switched to Ten then Zetsu, walking away from Y/N and Livia and out of the auditorium.
They made their way through crowds of people, ignoring everything and everyone, their mind filling with fog.
They exposed their Nen to all of those people, albeit on accident, but that didn't matter. If even one Hunter in that room had recognized it, they're dead. Again.
They barley noticed when they had exited the building and made it to the car, opening the back door and getting inside, locking it and throwing off the disguise Y/N had put on them.
They held the heel of their palms to their tightly shut eyes in an attempt the not let any tears escape, but ultimately failed.
They gulped down the tightness in their throat, letting out shaky breaths and hitting their hand to their head in order to ground themself.
They screwed up. They really screwed up.
Now, every Hunter would be out to get them. They'd put Y/N and her mom in danger. It didn't matter to them what the Hunters Association would do, they deserved this, but they couldn't, wouldn't, be able to face their one friends disappointment that was sure to follow all of this.
Holding their head in their hands, they cried.
Y/N would hate them now, they were sure of it.
Edit: gonna admit, now that I have read back on this chapter properly, it's really not my best work for this book, and I apologise for the poor quality. I tend to write my chapters in sections, i.e: one day I'll write a bit, and, say, a few days later write a bit more, and so on and so forth. I definitely could've done more with this, as I intended for this chapter to be an integral part of the story, and I'm sorry about how poorly written this is. I'll be sure to try and go back at some point to fix it
Edit: slow edits are being made currently, hopefully this chapter will be better in the future.
