Chapter 8

Timothy was in a sour mood when he woke up the following day. When his Rotom Phone woke him, he robotically wished Electchu good morning before showering. He barely touched his cereal, and when his parents wished him and Electchu good morning, he didn't answer. Entalmorfious hoped Helga would convince their son to give him a chance to make him understand, but his wife didn't have it in her heart to try. She was too tormented looking around the house and thinking of everything that needed to be packed. Timothy didn't even say goodbye to his parents when he and Electchu left for Wedgehurst Station.

As Timothy rode his Rotom Bicycle, Electchu looked at him worryingly. Though it shared Timothy's contempt for moving, his frustration seemed extreme. Electchu wondered how Timothy would break the news to Coovers and Sonia on the train ride to Motostoke.

Suddenly, just as Timothy reached the borders of Wedgehurst, Luke's ice cream truck screeched to a halt in Timothy's direction. Timothy stopped his bicycle before running into the truck and he and Electchu looked up to see Luke and Vanillite's sinister grins. A carton stood on the floor next to Luke's chair with melted mint chocolate ice cream dripping from the lid.

"We meet again, Durbin," Luke said.

"I'm not in the mood, Luke," Timothy said coldly.

"I don't give a flying Spoink if you're in the mood, Durbin. Vanillite and I have been waiting too long, and your tail-chasing buddy with the Oshawott ain't here. You and your Pikachu all alone," Luke said.

"Vanillite," Vanillite said.

"I said not now," Timothy said, raising his voice.

"Pikachu," Electchu said in unease.

"This has been a long time coming, Durbin," Luke said. "A little runt like you needs to learn when to pick your fights and show respect to your superiors. Take responsibility for your actions that ruin the lives of others. Otherwise, punishments that await you will only grow until getting an entire tub of melted ice cream covering you to the bone will be the least of your -"

"Electchu, Thunder Shock!"

Luke and Vanillite had a split second to react before Electchu hit them with electricity. They screamed in agony, with Luke in more agony than Vanillite, being neither a Pokémon nor having ever been shocked by an electric attack before. When Electchu finished using Thunder Shock, Luke leaned against the steering wheel with his eyes shut and grasped the steering wheel while hissing in pain. He groaned in agony until he heard Vanillite scream its name repeatedly. Luke looked to see it looking ahead and then turned his head to see Timothy riding away. The bald ice cream man's face turned red as he clenched his teeth, tightened his hold on the steering wheel, and slammed on the gas.

"DURBIN!" he screamed.

The back tires of Luke's truck screeched before the truck came charging after Timothy and Electchu. Vanillite fired Ice Beam repeatedly through the driver window while Electchu fired back with Thunder Shock. Timothy turned to another street at every opportunity in an attempt to lose Luke, even if it was the wrong way to the train station.

Luckily, just as Luke was catching up, sirens were heard behind him. He looked in his view mirror to see Officer Jenny tailing him in her motorcycle with her Growlithe sitting behind her. Luke wanted Vanillite to attack Officer Jenny's motorcycle with Ice Beam and tell her to mind her own business, but even Lucas Gullia, in all his lack of self-control, knew better than to resist an enforcer of the law.

"This isn't over yet, Durbin! Remember, one's punishment only gets worse the more you resist!" Luke called out.

"Vanillite!" Vanillite shouted.

Timothy stopped his Rotom bicycle to bite his thumb at Luke while Electchu stuck out its tongue. Timothy began riding back toward the train station, not bothering to see Luke pull over and get a scolding and a nasty fine from Officer Jenny. It was an irritating way to start the day when Timothy was already in a bad mood, but Luke getting in trouble with Officer Jenny made Timothy feel a little better.

Timothy and Electchu made it to Wedgehurst Station a few minutes before the train to Motostoke left. Coovers, Sonia, Oshawott, and Yamper, were worried that their friends took so long with Coovers about to call Timothy before Timothy arrived. As the train departed, Timothy, Coovers, Sonia, and their Pokemon took their seats at the nearest booth and Timothy explained what happened with Luke. Coovers and Sonia were amused that Officer Jenny pulled Luke over, but their amusement made Timothy uneasy as he followed his story with the news about Entalmorfious' job.

"You're moving to Unova?!" Coovers shouted.

"Yup," Timothy said monotonously.

"This Friday?!" Coovers asked.

"Yup," Timothy repeated.

"But that's just..."

"Yup."

Coovers looked down, his elbows resting on the table, and ran his fingers through his hair. Oshawott and Yamper watched Timothy and Coovers before turning to Electchu, who looked down glumly.

"But how could Larry tell your dad to move just like that?" Coovers asked. "And he's giving your dad days to live in another region to boot? That's insane."

"I know," Timothy said.

"He's expecting your dad to create a new division in a place he's never been," Coovers said.

"I know," Timothy said.

"I mean, has Larry ever been anywhere in Unova, let alone Black City?" Coovers asked.

"Heck if I know," Timothy said.

"It sounds like a ridiculous risk just to expand the business," Coovers said.

"I know," Timothy said.

Coovers massaged his forehead as though he was getting a headache from processing everything. Timothy turned to Sonia, who looked out the window with her mouth covered and arm resting against the table. Timothy dreaded telling Sonia the news most, for they knew each other all their lives, and the tears coming from her eyes made his heart break. If she wasn't sitting opposite Timothy and Coovers, Timothy would come over to hold his best friend, hoping it may comfort her in some small way. After half a moment, Sonia removed her hand from her mouth.

"This doesn't make sense," Sonia said before looking at Timothy. "This doesn't make sense. Why? Why does it have to be your dad? I'm glad Larry finally recognized your dad, but this is a huge jump from just being the guy who puts on the costume. Have your parents already found a place in Black City to live?"

Timothy scoffed and said, "I didn't ask, but considering how sudden this is, I wouldn't be surprised if you're the only one who's thought of that."

"Then why don't you and Electchu stay with Gran, Yamper, and me?" Sonia asked with a hint of hope in her voice. "There's a spare room in the attic. I'm sure Gran would be okay with you living with us."

"Arf, arf," Yamper barked.

Timothy smiled sadly and said, "I'd love to stay with you, Sonia, but even if your Gran is on board, my parents wouldn't allow it."

"Well, maybe they should. As far as I'm concerned, it makes more sense than you moving to another region with no specific place to go," Sonia said. "Heck, it's odd that you're still going to school when you're leaving on Friday."

"Yeah, well, I should try to get as much education as possible before going to school in a different place. Shouldn't I?" Timothy said. "Besides, I'd rather not stay at home where my submissive dad is. At least with school I have you guys and classes to distract me. Plus, we still have the flyers to hang up, Sonia."

"That's true," Sonia said. "Now that I think about it, I really hope this plan will save all of the wild Pokemon. That would be the only thing that would soften the blow of losing the Magnolia Paddock and you moving on the same day."

Timothy winced, feeling his heart ache again. Deep down, he and Sonia knew that the odds of getting help for all the Pokemon in the Magnolia Paddock were slim. Timothy thought of apologizing to Sonia that he wouldn't be with her to end like he promised, but he didn't want her to say it was alright when it wasn't. In Timothy's eyes, it was more essential to do whatever he could for Sonia than ever before. It was the only way he felt he could live with no longer being a part of her life.
