Bulletproof
2015
Andrea and Kevin were no strangers to school shootings. Kevin was only a toddler when the school shooting of Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado occurred, a horrifying tragedy that could have been avoided. Kevin was 16 when the tragic school shooting of Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut occurred, and this was a cruel tragedy. Why anyone would murder a classroom of innocent kindergarteners was something Kevin would never understand. Bellevue was a safe city, safer than Gotham was what Andrea had hoped. She never imagined 18 year old Kevin or five year old Damian would ever have to face a school shooting.
It was springtime in Bellevue Washington, and Kevin had a lot on his mind. Kevin was now a senior in high school and in a few months, he, Kara, and their classmates were all going to graduate high school. Kevin wondered what to do with his future. He was in love with Kara and wanted to ask her out to the school prom and maybe start a romantic relationship with her. But he also wondered if he could afford to go to a college in the Washington area around Bellevue, let alone a community college, not that Kevin had anything against community college. But a part of him also wanted to leave Bellevue and go to Gotham to meet his biological father Bruce Wayne. But would Andrea approve of this, even if he got a well paying job there? And would it be worth leaving Damian? Those were the things Kevin thought about, and he wasn't sure how Andrea would react. Although, Kevin loved to cook and was open to a culinary career.
As for Kara, she had also come to the conclusion that she was romantically in love with Kevin. She liked him as more than a friend, and he was one of the few people she felt normal around. He was so willing to show her around places that she was unfamiliar with and was a helpful classmate. Kara also knew that eventually she would graduate high school and she would most likely go to a college in Metropolis. But there was a part of Kara that wanted to stay in Bellevue and attend a college there if it meant she could see Kevin. She was also interested in a career in journalism, spending time with her cousin Clark and his wife Lois were certainly an influence on her career goals. Clark fought for truth and justice but Lois lived those values everyday in her reporting and free spirit. And Kara wanted to embrace that, even if she didn't work for the Daily Planet.
There is one more important detail you need to know, and it's one student whom Kevin and Kara went to high school with. His name is Eagan Wharton. Eagan did not have as good an upbringing as Kevin did, and it made him a bitter and cynical nihilist who saw no value in life. At best Eagan was troubled, and at worst, he was a sociopathic edge lord. He was the one classmate teachers always had to worry about because of what he could do to other students. Eagan was someone who could make even the class clown think twice about messing with. It was like if Michael Myers could talk. There was literally no color in his eyes, they were the blackest and most hateful eyes. He tried to be a bully to weaker people, but it always backfired and he always ended up getting bullied instead. There were even rumors that Eagan killed small animals like rats, squirrels, tiny dogs, and hamsters. The scariest part was, Eagan idolized villains like Lex Luthor and Joker, he would gladly defend Joker especially. There is certainly red flags when a person views villains like Governor Ratcliffe from Pocahontas and Gaston from Beauty and the Beast as heroes.
On another typical spring day in Bellevue Washington, Kevin and Damian were in the family car with Andrea who was dropping the boys off. "You willing to pick up Damian after school?" Andrea asked her son. It turned out Damian was so intelligent, that the caretakers at his daycare suggested Damian attend elementary school instead of preschool like most five year olds due to his sharp intelligence, making him the youngest but smartest in his class. "I can do that Mom," replied Kevin, "I'll pick him up and we'll take the bus home." Andrea smiled and said, "that's what I like to hear. I'll see you when I get home, okay?" Kevin nodded and said, "you too Mom. Okay Dami, see you later, alligator." He smiled at his half brother and playfully tussled his hair. Damian giggled in response, "after while, crocodile!" Kevin got out of the car and walked on over to Bellevue High School. He could see Kara walking to her locker. She was wearing a yellow sweater, blue jeans, and white sneakers with pink overtones, her long blonde hair in a ponytail. If this were a movie, Kevin imagined the song Kiss From a Rose playing. He breathed in and walked over to Kara. "Hey Kara, how you doing?" Kevin asked, trying to sound confident and not nervous and shy. "Oh hey Kevin!" Kara replied in a chipper voice, "I'm doing pretty good, thanks for asking. What about you? How are you today?"
"I'm doing pretty good too," replied Kevin, "just the same old mundane stuff. Hey I was wondering, are you doing anything Saturday afternoon?" He blushed a little. "No, not really," said Kara as she smiled at Kevin, "why do you ask?" She could hear his heart beating slightly faster from the shy nervousness. "I was wondering Kara, would you like to come to my house and watch The Princess Bride with me?" Kevin asked. He talked to Andrea about this little date, and Andrea didn't have a problem with what Kevin proposed, especially since she liked Kara. That's when it hit Kara that Kevin was asking her out on a date. She smiled and said, "I'd like that a lot Kevin. After I talk to my folks, I'll come over Saturday afternoon and watch the movie with you." Kevin brightened up and said, "that's great! I'll see you Saturday then." Kara smiled and said, "see you then, Kev." She winked at him. Kevin felt over the moon because he wanted to tell Kara the romantic feelings that he had for her. Hopefully this would work.
Several hours later, Kevin and Kara were both attending second algebra class. The algebra teacher was droning on about an equation, when something didn't feel right for Kara. She could hear footsteps outside the classroom and what sounded like assault rifles being carried. "I got a bad feeling about this," she thought. Kevin noticed her worried expression and quietly asked, "you okay Kara?" Before she could reply, suddenly the door was swung open, and in barged Eagan Wharton! He had a military buzz cut hairstyle that was dyed green, white makeup covering his face, and his lips painted red with a red smile on his cheeks, clearly imitating The Joker, and it made his black evil eyes stand out more. He wore a crudely made Joker T-shirt, and he obviously had a bulletproof vest inside the Joker T-shirt. He also wore combat pants that were spray painted purple and black combat boots, with kneepads and shoulder pads that were spray painted purple. The algebra teacher looked at Eagan and asked incredulously, "Eagan Wharton?!?! What is the meaning of this?!?!?! Why are you dressed like The Joker?!?!!?"
"SHUT UP, YOU OLD FART!!!!" screamed Eagan as he started shooting at the ceiling, "NOBODY MOVE OR TALK, OR I'LL KILL ALL OF YOU WORTHLESS MEAT BAGS, YOU UNDERSTAND ME?!?!?!" Kara saw an opening and fastly flew out of the classroom without being seen. Kevin assumed that Kara had hidden under her desk. But that was irrelevant for him. Right now, he was being held hostage by a psychopath who wanted to kill him for no reason. "Shit, I'm gonna die," he thought, scared for his life. He got out his cell phone and texted to Andrea, "Mom, tell Damian I love him. Thank you for everything, I love you." He pressed send, and the moment he sent it, suddenly Kevin's cell phone was gunned down to where it was practically mangled and unusable. "Did you try to play hero, pretty boy?!?!" Eagan threatened as he got closer to Kevin, the assault rifle nearing his face. "No-no," said a frightened Kevin, "I was just texting my muh- my momma... I'm just telling her I love her..."
"Oh, good for you!" Eagan mocked in a sarcastic voice. "Please, you don't have to do this Eagan..." Kevin said desperately, trying to reason with him. "Don't make me laugh." Eagan said with no empathy, "You're gonna be the first student I kill, Pretty Boy..." Kevin was ready to say a prayer when a familiar voice said, "I don't think so, buster!" Eagan turned around and it was Supergirl in her blue and red outfit. Kevin immediately recognized Kara's face, her bright blue eyes that were without glasses and her long blonde hair that was flowing without a ponytail. "Holy cow, Kara Danvers is Supergirl!" He thought, quite shocked! Supergirl could tell that Kevin recognized her. He was quite observant. "You leave him and everyone else alone." Supergirl said with bold confidence, "consider this your only friendly warning." She crossed her arms.
"Oh look at you, playing dress up like you're a Superman wannabe!" Eagan taunted, "you don't scare me! In fact, YOU'RE GONNA DIE, BITCH!!!" Eagan then shot at Supergirl constantly using all of his ammunition against her. But the bullets kept on dropping down whenever they hit Kara's bulletproof skin. Her suit wasn't even damaged. By the time he was done shooting Supergirl, Eagan's rifles were empty. Eagan looked at his empty guns in confusion, and then at Supergirl, asking, "huh???" Supergirl smiled and said, "seriously? That didn't even tickle me. My turn." She then used her heat vision and blasted at Eagan's empty assault rifle on his left hand. The rifle melted like butter in his hand. Kara then quickly appeared in front of Eagan much closer, her face near his smug face. She grabbed the other empty assault rifle on his right hand, snatching it and then she crushed it with her right hand like it was foil. "Not so scary without your guns, are you?" She teased. Eagan growled and headbutted Supergirl's head, she flinched just a little bit, this caused Eagan to see stars. "You're lucky I flinched," she teased, "If I hadn't, you'd be dead from your head exploding. Now I'm gonna teach you another lesson." Kara then grabbed Eagan and twisted his body to resemble a pretzel, causing him to scream like a soprano. Kevin looked on in astonishment! He couldn't believe that his next door neighbor was Supergirl! "I'll bring this guy to the police." Kara said to the teacher, "uh, I think you should evacuate everyone." Kara then flew out while carrying Wharton, looking at Kevin one more time before flying off. Yes, if it hadn't been for Supergirl, it could have turned out more tragic for Kevin and his family.
