prologue

note: although Bullet Train To Murder is marked as Mystery/Thriller, demanding that the pacing should be tighter, part 2 of this work, which was supposed to be cozy mystery, is going to feel slower. I hope that makes sense, thanks!

Silence.

No response came from the other end of the line.

Molly Rayne was consumed by her past, and even after she had made the decision of stepping away, it continued to haunt her.

'I feel too corrupted to continue what my heart yearns.'

She knew she could always reach out to people who would be there for her in an instant, but she figured she'd have to deal with this alone.

But when she told her mother about her decision, the silence was unsettling. One moment she was there and the next, gone. Molly sensed something was terribly wrong.

"Mom?!" She practically yelled into the phone.

No response.

With a click, she ended the call and sat on her bed, wondering what could've happened to her. She tried a few more times but there was no response, it went straight to her voicemail.

'Hello dear, it seems that I'm away at the moment. Would you be kind enough to leave a message for me so that I could get back to you when I can?'

She tried to say something but her throat felt dry. She didn't know what had happened just yet but she knew it couldn't be changed.

Molly called her dad but he didn't respond either. It felt like the whole world had abandoned her and there was no one to rely on except herself.

She braced herself for what was to come, made a few calls, prepared her bag and zipped her jacket.

It was time for another Mission.
