Not What I Expected

This is a one shot requested by Son_Gorin . Hope you enjoy!

When Steve manages to find his way to Bucky's apartment in Bucharest he is surprised to find a small girl sitting on the mattress in the corner with a colouring in book.

Damn it. He thinks to himself. I was so sure that this is the right one. Maybe I got the address mixed up.

"Oh, sorry. Wrong apartment." He says surprised and then goes to close the door.

"No, dad will be back soon." The little girl says casually, not looking up from the colouring of a dog that she is currently doing.

"Dad?" Steve frowns coming back inside.

"Aren't you Captain America?" The little girl asks, finally looking up.

She has big green eyes and blonde hair done in two little plates. She looks nothing like Bucky.

Steve eyes her wearily.

"Daddy talks about you all the time." She carries on. "He even said that you would probably come looking for him one day."

"Oh." Is all Steve manages to get out.

Things just don't add up. This little girl looks to be about 6 years old. Bucky hasn't been missing that long and he certainly wouldn't have been doing that kind of thing while he was under the control of Hydra.

Steve takes a moment to survey the apartment. It's tiny and dark and a mess. Newspapers are plastered all over the windows, all kinds of things are scattered everywhere. The only thing in the room besides the kitchen is the mattress where the little girl is sitting with two sleeping bags on it.

"I'm Kate." She smiles and stands up, placing down the colouring in book and breaking Steve from his thoughts. "It's nice to meet you Captain America."

"It's uh, nice to meet you too, Kate." He says shocked and confused as she starts to walk over to him.

Just then Steve hears the door click open again behind him. He whips around ready to defend himself only to see Bucky standing there looking shocked.

His eyes dart between Steve and the little girl as he stands frozen.

"Daddy!" She squeals excitedly. "Look!"

"Kate!" He gasps and rushes over to her, picking her up and hugging her tightly against him.

He kisses her cheek and stands slightly sideways as if to keep her away from Steve, closing his eyes for a moment in relief to have her in his arms.

"Why are you near my daughter?" He practically growls, glaring at Steve.

"Daughter?" Steve mumbles now more confused than ever. "Wait, what is going on?"

"Why are you here?" Bucky snaps. "What do you want? Can't you just leave us alone?"

"People are coming for you Buck." Steve says seriously. "I just want to help. They'll do anything to have you dead."

"Wh-what?" Bucky murmurs, his face falling into one of terror. "No. They can take me. Just not her. I swear to god if they touch her." He says, his gloved hands balling up into fists.

"Daddy?" Kate whimpers, looking up from where she is hiding in his shoulder. "What's wrong? Why is Captain America here?"

"Just stay calm Kate sweety, everything will be okay. I'm going to get you out of this." Bucky says, turning to her and putting her down, standing her behind him and keeping his hands on her.

"Captain America huh? So you do know me. That means you know why I'm here." Steve points out.

"I read about you in a museum." Bucky shrugs.

"I know you're nervous, and you've got plenty of reason to be. But you're lying." Steve says.

"I wasn't in Vienna, I don't do that anymore." Bucky says gravely before turning to look at the terrified little girl huddled up to his legs. "Not now." He adds quietly and reaches for her hand with his flesh one and squeezes it gently.

"Well the people that think you did are coming right now." Steve huffs. "Look, I'll help you protect her but these guys don't plan on taking you alive."

"That's smart. Good strategy." Bucky sighs.

"We need to hurry if we want to get her out of here." Steve states.

Bucky nods before crouching down to her level.

"Look, baby. Daddy's in a little bit of trouble. Remember when I said there might be a day when we need to leave?" He says softly.

"Mhm." She says shyly.

"Well today is that day. And if I tell you to run, you run as fast and as far as you can. Don't worry about me. I'll come find you when I can. Okay?" He says.

"Okay." She mumbles.

"Buck." Steve warns. "They're nearly here."

"Don't be scared honey. I'll protect you." He smiles half hearted.

"I won't." She pouts and then reaches up to hug him and he hugs her back gently.

When they can hear footsteps on the roof above them Bucky straightens up, his eyes flicker to the ceiling.

"This doesn't have to end in a fight Buck." Steve says.

"It always ends in a fight." Bucky huffs and pulls the glove off of his metal hand.

"You pulled me from the river. Why?" Steve asks sternly.

"I don't know." Bucky says in denial.

"Yes you do." Steve states.

"What are you talking about?" Kate whimpers, it's obvious that she's scared.

"Nothing sweety." Bucky mumbles.

Just then a window smashes and a canister comes flying through that Steve knocks out of the way right before it explodes. Then another comes in  landing right at Kate's feet. Bucky gasps and steps in front of her, kicking it away from them just in time for Steve to clamp his shield over it when it explodes.

He hears another one from behind them, grabs the little girl with his right arm and holds her against him as he lifts up the mattress to shield them from the blow.

"Ahh!" She screams terrified. "Daddy!"

"Stay calm baby. It'll be okay." Bucky murmurs absent mindedly as he looks around alertly for anything else.

Steve watches stunned. Never did he imagine to find Bucky in this situation.

There is a loud thud as the door starts to be rammed at.

"Stay here." Bucky mumbles as he runs out from the corner where Kate is hiding and flips the table across the room so that it is blocking the door.

Just then even more windows smash and a bunch of men dressed in black combat gear come flying through the windows. Kate watches in terror as her father and this stranger who has barged into their apartment fight off all the men that just seem to keep appearing. Bucky constantly looks back at her to make sure she's okay.

Her dad always tells her that one day he might have to fight some people to protect her but Kate's never actually seen him do it until now. And he seems to know exactly what he's doing.

Bucky kicks one of the bad men and sends him tumbling back through the door leading to the outside.

"Buck stop!" Steve says and grabs his shoulder.

Bucky turns around and glares at him with wide, crazed looking eyes.

Oh god, is he in winter soldier mode? Steve thinks dreadfully.

"You're gonna kill someone." He says with a bit less force, shrinking back sheepishly from Bucky's gaze.

Bucky looks at him in shock before shoving him to the ground and punching through the floorboards. Steve flinches thinking he's going to hit him.

"I'm not gonna kill anyone." He says through gritted teeth. "Kate take this!" He adds and pulls a backpack out from the floor and throws it over to her.

Obediently she puts it on and buckles the strap across her chest.

"Dad look out!" She cries as another man appears.

Bucky looks across the room to see a soldier holding a gun and pointing it between the three of them. Immediately he grabs both Steve and Kate and throws his arm up to protect them both. Steve then uses his shield to deflect the bullets.

When yet another appears Bucky throws Steve at him and then walks towards the first shooter using his hand to block the shots and his other to guide Kate to stay behind him. As he gets closer he grabs the man by the head and slams it through the shelves until he is on the floor. Without hesitation he picks up a nearby cinder block and then throws it at the next one sending him flying through into the cupboard.

"Daddy what's happening?" Kate shrieks as gun shots start to be heard outside the door.

"Don't worry Katie." Bucky grunts as he picks her up and then uses his metal hand to punch through the door.

Outside there a whole tonne more of the swat team and he fights them all off using just his one hand while holding Kate with the other. He picks up the battering ram and uses it to hit some of the soldiers with.

When he looks down the stairwell he can see more and more soldiers making their way up to them.

"Listen sweetie, I need you to run okay? Just like I was saying. I want you to go wait in that cubby just there until they've all come past you. Then get down to the 12 floor and hide, I'll be there as soon as possible. Don't be scared they don't want you." He says seriously as he sets her down and presses a kiss to her forehead. "Goodbye sweety, I love you."

She nods and bites her lip as her eyes well up before she runs down the stares and does just as Bucky says. All the men come up and charge at Bucky. He fights them off, gradually making his way further down the stairs.

At some point Steve reappears and helps him fight but really Bucky just wants to get away from him. All he wants is for him and Kate to be left alone so that they can live a relatively normal life.

When he gets a chance he leaps over the balcony and falls down to the twelfth floor because it's much quicker, shouting in pain as the force of grabbing at the rail rips at his shoulder. He hauls himself over and then looks around for Kate.

"Kate?" He whisper yells. "Katie?"

"Daddy?" She whimpers as she peers out from behind the closet door.

"I'm so sorry you had to see all of that honey." Bucky sighs seriously as he walks over to her and picks her up.

She hugs him tightly and snuggles down into his neck.

"Now hold on." He mumbles to her as he starts to stride down a hallway leading to the deck.

As he gets closer to the edge he picks up his pace and then jumps over the barrier, holding Kate tightly. She screams as they flail through the air but as they land Bucky curls her against him and shields her with his metal arm as he rolls across the ground to break the impact.

Quickly he gets back up and runs along the roof of the building that they are now on. Suddenly he sees a shadow appear above them and then Kate screams again too.

"Dad what is that?!" She cries.

Without even looking Bucky ducks out of the way just as someone dressed in a black, cat like suit jump in front of them and stands up in a position like they're ready to fight.

Oh for god's sake. He thinks. When will this stop?

He puts Kate down and gently pushes her to the side out of the way as he prepares to fight. The person in the strange suit lunges at him and they engage in a fight.

Bucky is terrified to learn that the masked offender has claws and they are currently being held right above his face. As he tries to hold them away he suddenly hears soft sniffling.

He looks to the direction that it is coming from to see Kate crying. It breaks his heart.

But then the person in the black suit notices too and let's go of Bucky, heading towards her.

"No!" Bucky yells as he gets up and frantically chases him. "Leave her alo-" He gets cut off as the person stops dead in their tracks.

The person stand there seemingly stunned looking at the little girl who is standing there scared and crying.

Bucky takes the opportunity to quickly grab her and run off. However the masked offender chases after them quickly.

Bucky looks down at the little girl crying in his arms.

"Please don't cry sweetie." He sighs.

"I'm scared." She sobs.

"I know." He says sadly. "I'm sorry to do this."

He adjusts her so that he is giving her a piggy back and then jumps over the edge of the building and down onto the pavement, running away from the cat like person. To try and get further away he jumps down another floor only to find that they are in the middle of a motorway.

Dodging out of the way of the cars he starts to run. Kate always knew there was something special about her dad. He's so strong and fast and that arm of his. But she's never learned why.

There's so much chaos. Sirens, cars, the scary cat guy, Captain America, even someone flying. It's all so confusing and terrifying for Kate but she trusts her dad so she doesn't freak out.

Suddenly he leaps over a barrier and runs towards a motorcycle.

"D-dad?" Kate stutters.

It looks like he's going to run right into it.

"Hold on." He says firmly as he grabs it, throws the guy off of it and spins it around, sitting on it.

He places Kate in front of him and speeds off trying to get away. There is a moment when the cat man jumps on them but Bucky holds him off, keeping him away from touching Kate. The bike lurches sideways and he uses his metal hand to stop them from crashing.

Kate is screaming in terror and clinging onto Bucky for dear life. He manages to kick the guy in the black suit off and keeps going. When they reach the end of the tunnel Bucky throws an explosive up onto the roof in an attempt to buy them some time but next thing he knows they are skidding out and being thrown along the concrete.

"Kate!" He screams as he feels himself loose his grip on her.

As he tumbles across the concrete he tries to see her and reach out for her. When he finally gets his bearings back he sees the cat man across from him and Steve lying on the ground in a heap holding her. She clings onto him shaking and terrified.

"It's okay Bucky I caught her in time. She's fine." Steve says reasonably because he can sense Bucky's panic.

"Give her to me. Don't touch her!" He growls and rushes over to them.

Kate reaches for him and hugs his legs as he stands there.

"Buck, it's okay. I'm on your side." Steve huffs as he dusts himself off and stands up too.

Just then a whole tonne of cop cars surround them and War Machine lands.

"Stand down now." He says firmly and holds up his blasters. "Congratulations Cap, you're a criminal." He spits as a swat team runs towards them.

But then he looks at Bucky and sees the small child holding onto him.

"Wait? What is that?" He frowns, taking off his mask in disbelief.

Instinctively Bucky reaches down and covers her.

"Don't you dare hurt her." He hisses.

The swat team charge at Bucky, ripping the little girl from his arms and pinning him to the ground. If it wasn't for her he wouldn't fight back.

He grunts and squirms and shouts under their grip but there's too many.

"Let her go! Leave her alone!" He yells.

"Hey hey hey!" Steve says stepping forward. "She's innocent. Don't do anything."

"Alright alright men! Leave the little girl alone." Rhodes instructs.

"Daddy!" She cries and tries to run back to him.

"No Kate." He says sadly. "Don't."

"Daddy?" Rhodes frowns. "Okay what? What the hell is going on?"

"It's okay Buck. I've got her. I'll look after her." Steve says and takes a hold of her.

She looks at Bucky and pouts but doesn't fight Steve off. She's heard a lot of good stuff about him from her dad.

All of them become distracted when the cat man takes off his helmet to reveal that it is T'Challa.

"Okay well that's two big surprised then today." Rhodes huffs. "Your highness." He adds in acknowledgement.

Bucky looks up at Steve solemnly, a warning to look after Kate. She means the world to him. He watches worriedly as Steve is taken away and his daughter taken with him.

When Bucky is locked in his containment unit all he can think about is Kate. Is she okay? Where is she? What are they doing with her? He keeps asking but all they do is threaten him and tell him that he shouldn't have a child with him because it's not safe for the child. But they don't understand what that little girl has done to change his life.

Meanwhile Steve, Sam, T'Challa and Kate all sit in the cop car. Sam and Steve in the back with Kate in between them. They both just keep looking down at her in confusion and disbelief and T'Challa keeps looking in the rear view mirror at her too. She just sits there quietly, scared out of her mind.

"Well this is not what I expected when I went looking for Bucky." Steve mumbles to Sam quietly. "It doesn't make any sense. Who is she? How did he get her?"

"It kinda makes a bit of sense in some ways." Sam shrugs. "I mean he lived in the top apartment probably to hide her away. He's seems really protective of her, she probably brings some happiness back into his life. He probably feels a little less guilty by looking after her too."

"Please don't do anything to my dad." Kate suddenly says when she over hears them. "He hasn't done anything wrong. He saved me when I was abandoned and alone. He looks after me. He loves me and I love him. He's a good man. Please leave him alone."

Hope you like it! I might do a part two if I get a chance :).
