mary anne and the great romance.

"HELLO, MISS WISH!" a doctor announced, coming into leah's room where she was laying on her side, "my names doctor jay, i'll be helping you with your time here! how are we doing today."

"your breakfast sucks. who eats ham for breakfast? is this britan?" leah spat, turning towards the doctor, still on her side.

"did you eat it?" dr.jay asked.

"heck no! ham is one of my fear foods!" leah said, turning back onto her side in defeat.

"great to know..." she trailed off, scribbling down some words on her clipboard, "now! how about we sit up and go take a shower!" dr.jay smiled with a motivating smirk, "we have all these great smelling shampoos for you, and your mom brought over some of your favorite soap!"

"pass."

"it's called coping, leah." dr.jay said, just wanting to help the girl.

leah turned over, looking at the doctor, "okay...nancy. i'm gonna call you nancy-"

"that's not my name-"

"shh. i've been through this all before. i dunno how the system has changed, but they didn't make me shower. the mirrors made me feel uncomfortable. i feel fine anyways. now if you could please leave so i can keep watching all these free movies, that would be great."

"oh. we know how showers make you feel, so we took ever mirror out of this room." dr.jay said, opening the door to the bathroom, "and if it makes you feel more comfortable, we can have someone wait outside of the bathroom if that makes you feel safer."

leah didn't know how she felt. it was uncomfortable in a nice way. it was like sitting on an animal fur.

awkwardly getting up out of her bed, she walked towards the bathroom, pulling the IV stand with her as she did.

she then turned to her doctor, "you're not sending me away?"

"no?" dr.jay said.

"oh," leah smiled, "cool."

••••

AFTER TAKING A SHOWER, leah felt a thousand times better. her greasy and still a bit frosting-filled hair was now damp, but it felt so much better. she felt cleaner and more proud of herself for doing something other than sleeping and watching movies in the last 24 hours.

a knock on her door was placed, "how we feelin? good?" dr.jay asked, a happy smile placed on her face.

"i hate to admit it, but really good." leah smiled.

"and you'll keep feeling like that everyday until you bust out of this place! now, here's a schedule!" dr.jay said, handing her a colorful schedule, "it's full of activities you can do, therapy sessions that are mandatory, and mealtimes."

"so, let's just say, ballpark, when will i be getting outta here?" leah asked.

"that's a good question! at the least, you'll be getting out in 2 weeks. at most, about 4 months."

"four months?!" leah cried, "i cant miss 4 months of school! or babysitting! or sam!"

"looking at you right now, you just took a shower. that's more that like...90% in this hospital. so i'm predicting that you'll be out in no time."

"before valentine's day?" leah asked.

"possibly...plans then?" dr.jay asked.

"my boyfriend was talking about taking me out to this very fancy restaurant. but now that won't happen!" leah mourned.

"well, leah, you can't eat. and i think that's a bit more important than a fancy lil date, ok? i'm sorry." dr.jay explained.

"no, it's fine. i'm just going through it all. still trying to accept the fact like, wow! i actually crossed the line! im in the hospital! haha!" leah laughed.

"you're still going through shock. that's fine. now, your first therapy session will be today at 2. she'll come into your room so you don't have to move around, ok?"

"got it." leah nodded.

"lunch for you will be rice and fruit. it'll be served at 11!" dr. jay said, about to leave the room.

"wait," leah stopped her, making her turn towards her patent, "you're not gonna send me away again...right?"

"what?" she asked.

"the last time i had to do this was when i was young. they sent me away to a children's hospital a long way away. i couldn't even see my mom. you're not gonna do that, right?"

"of course not, leah. you're more grown now! we know that you'll learn how to take care of yourself, and help you cope in healthy ways, ok?" the doctor nodded, making leah nod in comfort.

the doctor left and leah's phone went off, and she grabbed it.

"LEAH WISH?" a woman said, coming into leah's room where she was watching a show, "hi, my names jordan. i'll be with you for all the time you'll be here!"

"cool." leah said, sitting up as the woman closed the door and sat in the chair next to leah's bed.

"how are you doing today?" jordan asked, smiling at her.

"uh, good. this hospital has bad rice. you should talk to the cooks about that." leah commented.

"oh. uhm, well, i'm your therapist! i'm here to help you cope and talk with you! so! let's start off with the basics. full name?"

"leah marie wish." leah said.

"favorite color?"

"blue."

"favorite show?"

"i am not okay with this. but-"

"you're not ok with this?"

"no, i am," leah sighed, "i'm in a business with my friends! the babysitters club! we make big money." leah said.

"and your point is..."

"i need to get outta here!" leah exclaimed.

"leah, i can tell you're very stressed and tired. why don't you take a nap?"

"i don't need a nap! i need to get out of here!" leah said once again.

"you need to stay here until your weight gets back on track and your eating has become better. we're also going to teach you ways that you'll feel more confident in your body!" jordan smiled brightly.

"i just wanna leave." leah muttered.

••••

"LEAH WISH? THIS IS JORDAN FOR YOUR SEVEN O'CLOCK SESSION!" a muffled voice said from behind her door, as leah stared at the pitch black window. it had been a week since she had met jordan, and things were going well. she had found a healthy diet to help her with her weight without overdoing it, and found out that she can eat kiwi a lot!

"i'm going to bed!"

"it's not actually jordan," a voice said, opening the door and closing it swiftly.

"sam?" leah questioned.

"surprise? i texted you i was coming to see you."

"i'm too unmotivated to touch my phone."

"oh i'm sorry." sam whispered, clearly embarrassed. he sat down in a chair next to her, as she turned to face him.

"how long have you had that IV in?"

"long enough that i'll probably have a little mark on my hand for the rest of my life." leah smiled and chuckled all smiley, but sam could tell she didn't want to talk about the fact she had been there for almost 2 weeks.

"well, uhm," sam smiled, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a box, "happy valentine's day."

"what?" leah said in shock, "it's valentine's day?! how long have i been here?"

"not a long time." sam said, "but don't worry, i spared no expense!"

leah looked down at the box and frowned, "it looks expensive."

"i spared no expense!" sam said once again, making leah laugh.

she placed her hand on top of the box and opened it, gasping.

"sam?! how did you remember?"

"well, i just thought about the time you said-"

"'if anyone gave me a little ring from one of those dispensers, i would marry them.'" leah smiled brightly, putting the 25 cent ring on her finger. it was a green glittery one, and leah loved it.

"are you gonna marry me now-"

"you are desperate." leah said blankly, making sam burst out in laughter, and leah join in with him.

"also, i brought you something else." sam said, reaching into his backpack and pulling out a slip of paper.

leah took it and read it, eyes going wide.

"sam thomas. you did not."

"i covered every single one of your babysitting jobs, and all the cash is sitting on your dresser."

"you are the man of my dreams." leah said quite literally, reading the paper with wide eyes.

••••

THE DAY HAD FINALLY COME. leah could leave. she was relieved and happy on all sorts of levels. she wanted to do a cartwheel and kiss sam on the lips, but he wasn't there. so maybe she would have to kiss stacey...

lola was in there with ginny and louise, packing up all her things. leah sat in more comfortable clothes while louise asked her questions.

"did they give you good food?"

"most of the time." leah nodded, holding a bear she had gotten from them for valentine's day.

"was the showers cool?" louise asked.

"very much so." leah smiled.

"how about the people?" louise asked.

"they were so very helpful." leah smiled.

dr.jay walked in with a smile, and headed over to leah, "how's my superstar doing? ready to sleep on your own bed? eat your own food?"

"i'm so excited to go home and take a fat nap." leah smiled.

"that makes me so happy. now, you'll still have regular therapy sessions with jordan for the next couple months...about until december? you have your diet chart, you have all the exercise equipment you need...do you need anything else?"

"no. i think i'm all set." leah said.

"awesome. i guess i can take this out for you..." dr.jay trailed off, going over to leah and taking out her IV and hooking it back up to the machine, "i hope you take the greatest nap of your life!"

"thank you so much, doctor." lola smiled, clearly thankful that her daughter was now doing better.

"it's just my job." dr.jay smiled, and with that she left the room.

"i never wanna be in a hospital again." leah said.

"i read somewhere we can do home appointments!" ginny piped in.

••••

LEAH OPENED THE DOOR TO HER HOUSE WITH HER BAG IN HAND, going up to her room.

"i cannot wait to pass out for the next 13 hours." leah sighed, as lola laughed at her from afar.

she entered her room and dropped her bag, flopping down onto her comfortable bed. sighing as she took in the sent, she closed her eyes and started to drift into sleep. before the annoying sound of her phone went off.

she groaned and grabbed it, answering it.

"hello?"

"leah, leah, leah! how's it hangin?" stacey's voice filled her ears, as leah burst out laughing.

"it's going so well, stacey."

"all too well by taylor swift? 10 minute version?" stacey joked.

"honestly, sure. let's say that." leah smiled, looking at the green ring on her finger.
