-*-*-*-*- Jem -*-*-*-*-
Jem wearily placed his key in his front door, unlocking it slowly before stepping into his home. The day had been a long one, much too long in his opinion. It had been rehearsal day at the Royal Albert - the final rehearsal before the end of the Proms tomorrow night.
When he had first been asked to play the lead violin in the orchestra for the BBC Proms, he had been unsure. Will, on the other hand, had been absolutely ecstatic and demanded that Jem didn't let this opportunity slide. He had even made the phone call himself just to make sure that Jem accepted the job. And of course, Oliver had been more excited than both of them put together.
Tiredly, Jem placed down his violin case then shook off his rain covered coat. The weather in London would never cease to amaze him. He undid his bow tie, tossing it onto the stairs before opening the living room door.
Music seemed to be playing loudly from the kitchen where Jem swore he could hear singing and giggling. Creasing his eyebrows, he trekked through to the kitchen where he found a pretty hilarious yet endearing sight.
His husband and his eight year old son were both standing at the sink, the speaker on the shelf above them. Will's iPod was plugged in and blaring out Taylor Swift's Shake It Off as both he and Ollie pranced around, foam bubbles in their hair. Singing at the top of his voice, Will splashed Oliver with more soapy water from the sink, making him giggle with delight as he raised the plate he had been drying to defend himself.
"Papa!" he shrieked, yet couldn't contain his bright smile. "No more bubbles! We need to finish the washing up before Daddy gets home!"
"Awh, your dad won't mind," Will said, his eyes practically glowing with pure join. "But I should probably get you to bed before he does get back. I'll be in trouble otherwise."
"Oh it's far too late for that," Jem said, announcing with presence with a smirk. Ollie whipped round, his face breaking into the biggest grin.
"Daddy!" he cried, running and leaping into Jem's arms.
"Hi there, you little monkey," Jem said, hugging his son tightly. "So Papa let you stay up way past your bed time, did he?" Oliver giggled again, nodding whilst looking mischievously at Will.
"It was Papa's idea," he said. Jem smiled, looking up at Will who had just finished drying the last plate and drained the water from the sink.
"Well, I'll have to have a word with him then, won't I?" Jem replied. "Now go and get your pyjamas on. It's your bedtime. You've got a big day at school tomorrow."
"Okay," Ollie said, pouting slightly. He hugged Will again, saying goodnight before running up the stairs to bed. Jem watched him go before he felt Will's arms snake around his waist and his chin on his shoulder.
"How was your day?" he whispered in his ear. Jem sighed, leaning back against Will.
"Stressful, and long," he replied. "But it's the last night tomorrow." Will hummed disapprovingly, placing his hands on Jem's shoulders and messaging them gently.
"You're tense," he said, his voice lacing with worry. "Sit down. I'll make sure Ollie brushes his teeth and everything." Jem frowned slightly. He had hardly seen Oliver over the last few weeks. His day started with early rises and ended with late nights, and so his son was always in bed.
"I can do it," he replied.
"You sure?" Will asked, his eyebrows creased.
"Yeah, it's okay," Jem said. "I'll be down in ten minutes." Jem trudged up the stairs, making sure Ollie was in his pyjamas, had brushed his teeth and washed his face. He then sat down and read him his bedtime story before kissing his son goodnight. He quickly got changed himself then slowly went down the stairs again.
"Come here, love," Will said quietly, drawing Jem to the sofa where he snuggled against Will's chest. "Just one more day, then you're done." Jem hummed and closed his eyes.
"Thank you, by the way," he whispered. "I know the last few weeks haven't been easy with you having to look after Ollie while I've been so busy. You don't know how much it means to me that you're here to take care of everything while I'm living my dream." He opened his eyes again to see Will smiling gently down on him.
"You know I'd always do it for you," he replied. Jem smiled back but then sat up.
"There's actually something I wanted to talk to you about," he said, taking Will's hands. Their golden wedding rings sparkled together just as brightly as they did on their wedding night. The memory made Jem sigh softly with happiness before he brought his mind back to the situation at hand.
"I got a call today from Catrina at the hospital," Jem said slowly. "She'd just finished helping operate on a woman who had been in a car crash but...but she didn't make it."
"The poor girl," Will said, running a hand through his hair. "Did we know her? Was that why she was calling?"
"No," Jem replied. "It was actually because of something else. The woman was pregnant and...and they managed to save the baby." He hesitated for a moment. "Catrina was calling because the baby has nowhere to go. Apparently the woman didn't have any surviving family members, and they called the baby's father but he wanted nothing to do with it. He just said to give up the child for adoption."
Jem watched Will's face as realisation dawned on him. "Will...Oliver's eight now and I think it would be nice for him to have a sibling. Perhaps it would be nice for us to raise another child too. So I said to Catrina that I'd talk to you but...I want to adopt the baby." Jem wasn't quite sure what to expect but when Will leaned in and kissed him, he could only take that as a yes.
"Of course we'll adopt the child," Will whispered. "If that's what you want, then that's what I want too. And you're right as always, Ollie could use a sibling to play with." Jem laughed, shaking his head before grabbing his phone.
"Catrina sent me a photo," he said, showing Will the phone screen with the baby. "She's a girl, so I guess we'll have a daughter as well as a son." Will's violet eyes turned a little misty when he looked at the photo. Their soon to be daughter was wrapped up in a yellow blanket, fast asleep in a cot. Jem felt sad that she didn't even know her mother had died yet, but that only made him more determined to give her a warm home.
"She's gorgeous," Will said, his voice full of joy. "So when can we take her home?" Jem chuckled again.
"We've got to go through all the adoption papers first," he reminded Will. "But Catrina said hopefully in a few weeks." Will kissed Jem again before stealing his phone and messaging all their friends in their Facebook group the picture. Jem rolled his eyes as Cecily and Jessamine started arguing over who would be godmother whilst Tessa and Magnus sent their congratulations, saying that they hoped their new daughter would be home with them soon.

Jem took a deep breath as he stepped through the hospital doors and made his way to reception. Next to him, his husband gripped his hand tightly with both excitement and apprehension.
Today was the day they got to take their daughter home for the first time.
By God, Jem couldn't remember being this nervous since the day they got Oliver. He had been four when they first found him in the orphanage. His father, the only family member he knew, had left him there three months before, claiming he just couldn't look after him. Both Will and Jem had fallen in love with Ollie the moment they saw him. When they adopted him, it had taken a while for them to earn the boy's trust. He was still adamant that his biological father was going to come back and take him home. But the day he realised he wasn't coming back, Will and Jem were there to pick up the pieces. Now, their son trusted and loved them before anyone else.
Ollie walked in front of Jem and Will as they made their way to the infant's unit. Catrina was there to meet them and she showed the family into a side room where their daughter lay, cooing in her cot. She said a few words of congratulations before she left them to it.
Beside him, Will took a breath as he stepped forwards to the cot. He leant on the railing, his fingers gently brushing their little girl's forehead in a comforting motion. It was the first time either of them had seen her for real and not in pictures. "She beautiful," Will said, and Jem had to agree.
Will reached down and cradled the girl in his arms, smiling as she settled instantly. Jem joined him, smiling down on their daughter. But Ollie remained at the door, looking unsure.
"Papa?" he asked uncertainly. "Daddy? Does you getting a new baby mean you're getting rid of me?"
Jem's heart dropped like a stone at the thought that his son really believed that. He quickly scooped Ollie up into a hug. "No, little monkey," he said soothingly as Ollie began to sob a bit. "Nothing in the world could make us want to get rid of you! Don't you ever think that we don't love you, because you are the most precious thing in the world to us."
"But you have a new baby now," Ollie cried. "And you'll love her more than me." Will made a pained noise.
"Ollie, we will always love you just as much as we love this baby," he said. "This is your new little sister which means our family has just grown a bit. But that doesn't mean our love for you has gone." Jem put Ollie down again, guiding him to a nearby chair. Will followed and crouched down. "Would you like to hold her?" he asked their son gently. Ollie nodded hesitantly so Jem showed him how to support the baby's head before Will placed the child into Ollie's arms.
For a moment, Ollie looked genuinely scared. But then he relaxed and even started rocking his new sister, humming under his breath. Jem and Will looked on, both with happy tears in their eyes.
"We need to name her," Ollie said suddenly.
"Yes, we do," Will replied. He glanced at Jem, remembering their conversation the week before. "We were wondering if you would like to name her, Ollie. I think she'd like that." Oliver looked thoughtful but then grinned.
"Lily," he said finally. "Lily Carstairs-Herondale." He looked up at his parents, his eyes wide. "I think it's a pretty name."
"Yes," Jem breathed, too happy to say much else. "Yes it is." Will kissed his cheek again and they crouched down to Ollie's height again, surrounding their new baby girl and their loving son. It was time to bring their family home.
After all, they had quite the life ahead of them.
