35. Ruin
After leaving Hyunjin in a small cafeteria area with Seungmin and Han so Hyunjin could convince Seungmin he was perfectly fine, Bonita decided that she ought to check up on Minho. Before doing so though, she went down a few levels to the gift store in the hospital. She didn't want to go see him empty-handed, especially when she knew it was her fault that he was in the hospital to begin with.
'Why wasn't he more careful?' she thought as she began to make her way down the narrow aisles of the gift shop in search of something thoughtful for him.
Her wandering eventually led her to an aisle where there were tiny plush animals. Bonita's eyes scanned their faces before landing on a tiny tan and white kitten plush near the back. It reminded her of Minho's cat, Mittens, so she immediately grabbed it. As she walked towards the front of the store, she noticed there was already a couple standing there. It was none other than Minho's parents.
Tightening her hold on the plush in her hand, she stayed back a few feet as she watched them looking at the flowers. They were looking at some white tulips, studying them as if they were considering buying some.
"He's allergic to those, you know."
Hearing a voice behind them, his parents turned to look at her standing there. Bonita didn't know what made her feel more like a child in front of them: the fact that her clothes weren't as expensive or well-arranged as theirs, or the fact that she looked like a kid, standing in line holding nothing more than the plush animal in her hands.
"Excuse me?" the man started. "Were you talking to us?"
Bonita took a breath and nodded.
"Minho is allergic to tulips," she said. "So don't get those for him."
"Oh, I see," said the woman with a frown. "What would you suggest we get him then?"
"He doesn't want anything," said Bonita. "Nothing you can buy him anyway."
Even though Minho had never talked to her about why he had distanced himself from his parents, it was pretty evident now. They seemed to be the type of people that thought money could solve all problems, including rebuilding a bridge with their son.
"All he needs and has ever wanted is your love," continued Bonita.
The two of them fell silent after that as Bonita bowed her head to excuse herself. She went up to the cashier, putting the plush animal down before digging money out to pay for it. As she did, her eyes caught sight of some helium 'Get Well' balloons behind the counter.
"Can I also get one of those?" she asked, pointing out a mint colored 'Get Well' balloon since mint was his favorite color.
His parents were still standing off to the side as she gathered up her purchases and moved to leave. As she stalled in the doorway in order to tie the balloon to one of the kitten's paws, she felt a hand on her shoulder. Turning her head, she saw that it was Minho's mother.
"Do you think it's too late for us to make amends with our son?" she asked.
"It's never too late to do anything," Bonita said, "but you need to give him time to let you back in. Don't force yourself back on him."
"I understand. You must really care about him."
"I do," said Bonita as she felt her chest pang. "I care about him more than he realizes."
Leaving the gift shop then, Bonita made her way back upstairs to the patient room where Minho was. Just as she was reaching it, she saw Changbin escorting a very sick looking man away. Approaching the room, Bonita knocked on the door, waiting for Minho's voice before opening it.
As she popped her head in the room, she saw that he was lying in the bed by himself. He was staring at a folder on his lap, looking at it with a crest-fallen look on his face.
"Are you okay?" asked Bonita as she closed the door behind her.
"I just...I'm sick of people in my life disappointing me," said Minho, looking up as he saw Bonita standing there with her gift. "Is that for me?"
"Yeah..." she said with a smile. "I thought I'd get you a mini Mittens without the maintenance."
"Thanks," said Minho as she walked over to him and handed it over, watching him smile a bit as he looked from it to her.
She had taken the folder from him when she had given him the plush, looking at the name on it.
"So this is what you risked your life for?"
"Essentially," he said, "but I think it cracked the whole case wide open, so it was worth it."
"But you could have died," she said as she put the folder on the small table beside his bed.
"I didn't though. I told you. I'm like a cat..."
His voice trailed off when he saw the tears in her eyes. Putting the plush aside, he reached for some tissues nearby, grabbing one and holding it out to her.
"I'm sorry. I don't mean to cry. I just..."
"It's okay," said Minho. "Everything's okay."
Sniffling, she nodded as she used the offered tissue to dry her eyes. Shifting a bit on the bed, Minho patted the spot next to him.
"Sit down and come see that your best friend is just fine," he said.
Sinking down to sit by his side on the bed, Bonita threw the tissue away as she looked at him. His eyes scanned her face as he asked, "Is something else going on?"
"I bumped into your parents in the gift shop earlier."
"Oh...How did that go?"
"They were trying to buy you tulips and I stopped them."
Smirking, Minho rolled his eyes.
"Leave it to them that after all this time, they are still trying to buy me off and do it with something that I'm allergic to no less. Did they say anything to upset you?"
She shook her head, reaching to grab one of his hands.
"The only thing that upset me about them was that they hurt you," she said, "Obviously there is a reason you distanced yourself from them."
"You're right there," said Minho with a sigh as he looked down at Bonita's hand holding his.
"Maybe it's time though that you tried giving them a second chance."
"Why would I want to do a thing like that?" he asked. "I'm happy now."
"You think you are," she said, "but take it from me, you want to take advantage of your parents being around while they still are."
Looking up from her hand, Minho saw that Bonita's eyes were filling with tears again.
"Even if my parents were jerks, I'd do anything to have them back in my life," she said. "I don't have that ability though, but you do. Take advantage of that."
Nodding, Minho reached for the tissue box again. As he plucked a tissue from it, a weak chuckle escaped Bonita's lips as she took it from him.
"I think I'm falling apart a bit right now. I'm sorry."
"Gosh, would you stop apologizing, you ninny?" asked Minho as he brushed her hair out of her face so he could wipe away some of her tears.
"Ninny?"
"Would you rather me call you stupid again?" asked Minho.
"Fine. I'll take Ninny even though it makes me sound like a horse."
Chuckling at the weird turn in their conversation, he watched as Bonita settled down again, tossing her tissue away. Minho wrapped his hand around her hand in return finally, rubbing his thumb over the back of it.
"I'll try and give my parents a second chance," said Minho. "I won't ruin a potential future with them. I'll give them one more chance and let them be the ones that decide if there really will be a future with me once and for all."
"I think that's the right thing to do," said Bonita. "I think it'll make you happier."
A small smile flickered across his lips as he kept his thumb padding back and forth across the back of her hand. Chris' words played in his mind, causing the hesitant part of him to take a backseat as he took a deep breath.
"There is one thing I would like to ruin though."
"What's that?"
"Our friendship."
Wide eyed, Bonita turned to look at Minho after he said those words. His face remained passive as his eyes locked with hers.
"You want to ruin our friendship?" she asked as he nodded his head.
"But why?" continued Bonita. "Was it because I talked to your parents about you?"
"Yes, among other things," he said.
"You're just going to end our friendship now because of all that?"
Hearing the panic edge into her voice, he shifted to sit up a bit, smirking.
"Why are you smirking at a time like this?" asked Bonita.
"It's because I think you're misunderstanding what I'm trying to say."
"What is there to misunderstand? Did you not just say you wanted to ruin your friendship with me?"
"I did."
"So that means?..."
"That means this," said Minho as he leaned forward to press a quick kiss to Bonita's lips.
