14. Flux

Minho stood where he was as Changbin sat up straighter as he readied himself to tell his theory. Looking at Bang Chan, Changbin held out a hand towards him.

"I feel the best way to confirm what I'm thinking at this moment is by example. Can I have one of your arms please?"

Confused by what Changbin was saying, Bang Chan arched a brow but complied otherwise. He stuck out his arm as Changbin unearthed a scalpel from a drawer nearby. He hovered it right over Bang Chan's arm before slicing it across it.

Nothing happened. No scratch. No blood. It was like he hadn't even done anything even though they had all witnessed Changbin's actions.

"What does that mean?" asked Bonita in shock.

"It means Bang Chan here is invincible because he doesn't exist."

"But I'm sitting right here," said Bang Chan.

"It's because you're in a condition...I'm going to term it 'flux'. The thunderstorm Bonita claims snapped you from your show to this world essentially brought you from a world of fiction to one of reality. Nothing in this reality can affect you while you are in this state of flux because you don't exist in this world."

"And you are meaning to tell me that you just came up with a theory like this right on the spot based on some ridiculous story those two told you that you also seem to believe?" asked Minho.

"Are you telling me you don't believe?" asked Changbin as he looked at Minho. "I was told you were the one to watch him fall thirty-five feet to what should have been his death."

Minho fell silent as Changbin turned his attention back to Bang Chan who was obviously still trying to take this all in.

"So I'm...invincible?" asked Bang Chan.

"To a certain extent, yes," said Changbin. "Nothing in this world may be able to affect you, but you are still being slowly affected by your world. There's always some sort of give and take. I'd have to run some tests of my own to confirm for sure, but I have a feeling that the longer you stay in a world you don't belong, the more risk you have of fading from existence all together."

The weight of Changbin's recent revelation hung in the air of the closet. Bonita looked over at Bang Chan as he looked over at her. She could see slight traces of sadness and fear mingled in his eyes that he was trying to hide. Bang Chan didn't want to go back to his life of isolated solitude, but it seemed like there was no choice in the matter.

"This is...a lot..." said Bonita finally as she looked at Changbin as he nodded.

"I know it is. I also know that I'm just theorizing here, but if you'll allow me to spend some more time around Bang Chan and run some tests..."

Bonita, Minho, and Bang Chan all exchanged looks. It felt like they hadn't had a moment to let anything sink in since it all happened.

"I have to put it this way," said Changbin when he sensed their hesitancy. "Either I can conduct tests on him or the doctors at the hospital probably will. I heard whispers."

"But Bang Chan is not a lab rat," said Bonita as she looked back at Changbin. "He's a human being."

"I know," said Changbin. "I will treat him as such. Please. You have to trust me and let me help."

After they had all agreed to let Changbin run more tests in an attempt to help, he started to plan how to best get them out of the hospital. Leaving the closet and entering the room next door, Changbin told Bang Chan to lay down on the bed and fake being dead.

"You just need to pretend to be dead long enough for me to get you out of the hospital," said Changbin when he saw how pale Bang Chan's face was as he tugged a white sheet over his legs and chest.

Bonita didn't like seeing him lying on the bed and Minho — who was standing alongside her — had to admit to himself that he didn't like it either. Bang Chan moved to put a small ball under his armpit that Changbin gave him.

"Make sure you squeeze that so it stops your pulse temporarily," Changbin instructed, "and play dead until I tell you it's safe."

Dragging the white sheet further up his chest so that it basically tickled the underside of his chin, Bang Chan locked his eyes on Bonita.

"You're going to be okay. It's just temporary," assured Bonita, elbowing Minho in the side. "Right?"

"Right," confirmed Minho with a nod of his head. "Just sleep like a log. You're good at that."

Bang Chan smirked at Minho's comment before nodding his head, shutting his eyes as Changbin finished dragging the sheet over Bang Chan. He got behind the bed after, beginning to push it out of the room. Bonita and Minho walked side-by-side behind Changbin as he carefully navigated down the hallway of the hospital and towards the morgue. Right before they could enter the morgue, a doctor stopped them.

"Who's this you've got here?" asked the doctor, not seeing any sort of toe tag on the body.

"See for yourself," said Changbin with confidence as the doctor did just that, pulling the sheet back a bit so that he could see who was lying there. The look of shock that passed onto the doctor's face became clear almost immediately.

"Is that..."

"Yep," said Changbin as he watched the doctor try to take Bang Chan's pulse. Bonita tried not to look anxious as he laid there pretending to be dead.

'He really looks dead,' thought Bonita with a shiver as the doctor eventually withdrew his hand with a sigh.

"He heard all the whispering going on in the hospital and thought himself invincible," lied Changbin with a tsk as he drew the sheet back over Bang Chan. "It's a shame that this place is almost worse than a gossip circle."

"Oy! Be careful how you talk to your superiors. You're still an intern."

Bowing his head in apology, Changbin moved past the disgruntled doctor. The doctor held out an arm, bringing both Bonita and Minho up short.

"Who are these two? You know no unauthorized personnel is allowed past this point."

Changbin turned to look at Bonita and Minho.

"I'll come talk to you both up front once things are settled so we can go over the paperwork."

They both nodded. Bonita stood rooted to her spot as Changbin pushed the bed into the morgue and it took Minho wrapping an arm about her and directing her back down the hallway for her to move.

"He's going to be fine," said Minho in a reassuring whisper in her ear as they re-entered the waiting room at the front of the hospital.

Bonita felt the tears pricking her eyes as she just nodded her head at Minho's words. Seeing Bang Chan looking so dead like that brought back a wave of memories from her past. It reminded her of when the show had been cancelled when the actor died, causing her to lose grip on the one thing that had kept her afloat amongst the turmoil and depression she had felt. Minho — the person that had stepped in to fill the gap — kept an arm about her as they both moved to take a seat amongst the other families sitting around them. To anyone they might have looked like a cute couple, but the truth was that they were merely the glue keeping each other from falling apart.

It seemed like a lifetime before Changbin came into the waiting room with a clipboard. He saw them sitting there, coming right over to them as they rose to their feet.

"Follow me. We'll just fill out this paperwork and then we'll arrange the transport."

Nodding, the two of them followed Changbin back down the labyrinth like hallways and eventually out back to where a white windowless van was idling. A young man sat in the driver's seat, shouting out at Changbin as he opened the passenger door, "Why do we need to transport this body now? Surely the funeral home is closed for the night."

"Just don't argue with me, Han," said Changbin as he tried to scribble down some information on the sheet to make it appear as if Bang Chan had died. "You two, get in the back."

"Get in the back?!" asked Han as his voice pinched a bit in panic. "You know no one is allowed to ride back there!"

Changbin rolled his eyes as he sat down on the passenger seat, slamming the door shut.

"Stop yelling. Trust me. Okay? Just start driving."

Han nodded as he cast a wary look over his shoulder at Bonita and Minho in the back of the van before he started to drive the van out of the backlot of the hospital and onto the main road. Once they had started to drive for a few minutes, Changbin turned in his seat to look in the back.

"Chan, it's safe now."

Looking confused, Han watched in the rearview mirror as Bang Chan sat up. Han let out a shriek, jerking the steering wheel suddenly to the left. Changbin had to lean over in his seat to correct them before they crashed.

"Eyes on the road, idiot!"

"But the dead man is alive!"

"He wasn't actually dead," said Changbin.

"Well what in the Romeo and Juliet..." Han started before his voice trailed out, shaking his head. "So I take it we're not taking mister not dead back there to a funeral home after all?"

As Changbin and Han's talking faded into the background, Bonita and Minho both looked at Bang Chan. In the intermittent strips of light that shone through the windshield and into the back from the streetlamps they drove pass, they could see the terror etched on to Bang Chan's face.

"You're okay, Bang Chan," assured Bonita.

He just nodded, his mind giving him a false sense of security. Faking being dead brought him back to how dead and alone he had felt in that shelter while the rest of the world around him fell apart. He was tired of feeling alone. He was broken from his thoughts when, surprisingly, Minho leaned in to give him a hug.

"Are you actually hugging him?" asked Bonita in shock.

"Yes," said Minho to Bonita's astonishment, Minho tightening his arms around Bang Chan. "For what it's worth, I'm glad you're not a human pancake."

Bang Chan smirked as he slipped his arms around Minho in a hug back.

"Don't forget that I still don't trust you though..." added Minho as Bonita chuckled, rolling her eyes.

Bang Chan made eye contact with her in the darkness over the top of Minho's shoulder before he shifted to hold out an arm towards her to indicate that he wanted her to come in for a hug too. Shifting, she moved so that she could hug Bang Chan with one arm and Minho with the other.

In the darkness of the back of the hospital's van, they were the glue that kept each other together.
