13. A Theory
Bonita felt tired, but she couldn't sleep. Sitting in a chair beside Bang Chan's bedside where he still remained unconscious, she thought back on the awkward conversation she and Minho had with Felix and I.N. When she tried to explain to them that the man was Bang Chan and he had become thunderstruck out of her DVD player and his show, they seemed hesitant to believe her. Bonita could tell that Felix had a thousand and one follow-up questions more than likely for him and for I.N who still was under the influence. However, a majority of the questions had to wait for the day as I.N's lack of sobriety was the bigger scene at the moment in the hospital. Felix offered to take him home only after Bonita promised to talk about this further with him as soon as possible, exchanging numbers with her to stay in touch before leaving.
On the way back to the cafeteria, Minho had gotten a call from work about an important meeting that had come up. Not wanting to leave Bonita alone in the hospital but also not wanting to get fired, Bonita had assured him that she would be fine until he returned. She had a lot to think about anyway, but her main concern was wondering when Bang Chan would wake up. He fell from the top of a thirty-five-foot-tall building and had survived without a broken bone or scratch of any sort.
'What does all this mean?' she thought, noticing a twitch beneath his eyelids before they slowly cracked open.
They remained half squinted for a moment as he looked up at the ceiling above him. Bonita could see his chest go up and down a bit faster as if breathing was coming hard to him. Standing up, she moved to walk over to him, grabbing one of his hands to anchor him. The moment her hand wrapped around his, his head turned to look at her. She could see the panic in his eyes, shining as bright as the stars.
"You're okay," she said. "You're just in the hospital right now."
She felt his hand turn to wrap about hers, squeezing it tightly as the panic in his eyes slowly started to subside.
"What happened?" he asked. "All I remember is falling and then waking up here...I thought I was back in my shelter for a moment and that everything that happened was just a dream..."
A soft smile came across Bonita's lips as she rubbed a thumb over the back of his knuckle.
"You're still here...don't know whether that is a good thing or not..."
A small smile graced his lips then as he replied, "It's a good thing. Trust me."
The moment between them was shattered by the growling of Bang Chan's stomach. With semi-flushed cheeks adorning the both of them, they let go of each other's hands as Bang Chan slowly sat up.
"Careful," said Bonita, still not being able to believe he had fallen all that way without dying or breaking anything.
"My stomach has other plans about me being careful," said Bang Chan with a chuckle as he sat up on the bed, putting both of his hands over his stomach. "It sounds like I have a beast living in there."
Chuckling, Bonita checked the time on her cell phone.
"I think the cafeteria might still be open if you want me to go get something for you..."
"I want to come with you," said Bang Chan.
"But you're..."
"I'm fine," he insisted as he threw his feet over the side of the bed.
Nodding, Bonita moved to go try to find the boots he had been wearing when he left her place earlier. She watched as he slipped into them, soon standing beside her.
"Where's Minho?" he asked, finally seeming to notice for the first time that they were alone. They hadn't truly been alone since he had first appeared.
"He had urgent business at work. Trust me. He didn't want to go."
'You'd think he was your biggest fan or something,' thought Bonita as Bang Chan chuckled.
"I'm sure he'll be back soon," said Bang Chan. "He cares about you an awful lot, you know."
"I know," said Bonita. "I don't know why though."
"You don't know why?" asked Bang Chan with an arched brow, Bonita paling when she realized she had said that out loud. It had been a thought that had been brewing in the back of her mind for a long while but that she had never given a voice to.
"I...um...please just forget I said that..." she muttered quickly, turning her head away from him and moving to walk down the hall.
Bang Chan didn't say anything, but Bonita knew that he was following after her. There was already so much going on that she didn't need to throw any sort of insecurities into the mix. The insecurities were old news after all and were something that just needed to be re-bottled up and buried. Wrapped in her thoughts, she walked past a wet floor sign without noticing it, soon stepping right into a slick spot on the tile floor.
Her center of gravity shifted as she started to fall backwards, soon caught in someone's embrace from behind. Turning her head to look at them, she saw it was none other than Bang Chan. Like the morning he had woken up on her couch for the first time, the two of them locked eyes and it was if the whole world faded away.
Bonita moved to shatter the moment as she blushed and stood up straight, clearing her throat as she looked away from him.
"Thank you...the cafeteria is just around the corner. We're almost there."
Bang Chan stood still for a moment as he watched her practically run off around the corner. The odd feeling in his chest was there again. He tried to brush it off though as he reached up a hand to rub it as he followed after her.
The cafeteria was empty for the most part, a majority of people already having come and gone. It left them with what remained on the self-serve bar. Bonita and Bang Chan both grabbed a tray, filling it with enough food to satisfy their hunger before taking a seat at a table near the back.
Bonita didn't know why she felt so awkward around the man sitting across from her. She wondered if it was a combination of her admitting a long-held insecurity of hers along with a fictional person she had once found comfort in actually being real. In a way too, she was his comfort as he navigated his new surroundings. It was oddly ironic.
They ate in silence for a moment, the chatter of the cafeteria workers cleaning up the self-serve bar the only noise to be heard.
"Bonita," said Bang Chan, causing her to look up at him. "Are you okay?"
"Me? Why wouldn't I be okay? I'm fine..."
"That's what people tell themselves when they are far from it," said Bang Chan. "Trust me. I used to tell myself that a lot just to stay sane."
He moved to reach out a hand across the table to touch her wrist, causing Bonita to look up at him.
"I'll tell you the same thing I did Minho. I'd like to be your friend and as a friend, you can talk to me. I promise it'll stay between us just like this grayish applesauce on my tray...at least, I think it's applesauce..."
Bonita chuckled as Bang Chan's infectious smile caused her to do the same.
"I appreciate that...just, you'll have to forgive me. This still all feels like a dream to me. I was used to taking comfort in your show and now you're sitting in front of me."
"Well, you aren't alone. This feels like a dream to me too," said Bang Chan as he retracted his hand to start eating. "So, let's make it less like a dream and more of a reality."
"And how do we do that?"
"By telling me about yourself," said Bang Chan. "After all, I feel like my life is an open book in comparison due to my show."
"There really isn't much to tell about my life."
"Lies. Everyone has a story and I want to hear yours. Lay it on me."
Normally she kept her life story close to her chest, having only ever told it once to Minho in confidence when they had first started becoming best friends. She didn't know what made her able to open up to Bang Chan so easily, but open up she did, sharing the events that had developed her into the person she was today while Bang Chan ate and listened intently and sympathetically the entire time.

On the way back to Bang Chan's hospital bed after finishing their meal and deep conversation, the two of them stopped dead in their tracks when they saw a young man in a lab coat hastily running towards them. He came to a stop a few feet from them, leaning over his knees as if he was about to pass out from the run.
"Can we help you?" asked Bonita as the man finally looked up, nodding hastily as he pointed a finger at Bang Chan.
"Is this...Lee Haechung?"
Bang Chan nodded his head as the man looked him up and down in awe. Bonita saw the way the man seemed to marvel as he looked at Bang Chan and she slowly began to wonder if he was like Felix and I.N.
'Is it possible that he thinks he is Chris?' thought Bonita.
"Can I...Can I talk to you both for a moment? In private?"

Minho tried to make it back to the hospital as soon as he could. It bothered him that he had left Bonita alone with Bang Chan. It still made no sense to Minho how Bang Chan could fall from such a great height and not be injured, let alone die. It wasn't like Minho was hoping that fall would kill him, but there was no denying the fact that it would have killed a normal person.
Walking into the brightly lit hospital, the AC played with strands of his hair in greeting as he walked towards where Bang Chan was located. When he arrived though, he stalled seeing that the bed was empty and so was the chair beside it. Wiping around, he grabbed the arm of a nurse that was passing by, causing her to pull up short and look at him in shock.
"Do you know where this patient went?"
Squinting past Minho at the patient information to see what the name was, she shook her head.
"I'm sorry, sir. He's not a patient on my roster, and..."
Minho didn't wait around for an explanation as panic set in anew again. He brushed past her and dug out his phone as he began to search the various halls for where the two of them could have gone.
'They couldn't have been discharged,' thought Minho as he fast walked past doctors and nurses that gave him odd looks, his panic starting to get the better of him the longer Bonita's call rang without being answered. 'Bonita would have called me if that were the case...so did something happen to them? Are they...'
His thoughts were cut short as Bonita finally picked up on the call just as he was coming to a standstill in front of a small selection of vending machines.
"Where the heck are you? Where did you guys go? Are you both okay? Did he die? Did..."
"Calm down. We're fine. We actually...met someone."
"That statement is not helping me feel any better."
"Look, I'll tell you where we are and you can meet them for yourself. Just go towards where the cafeteria is and then take a right, then a left, then a slight turn..."
"Bonita...do I look like a human GPS? What room are you in? Are you in a waiting area? The morgue?"
Minho paused when Bonita gave him the actual answer, raising a brow in surprise.
"You're where?"

The first thing that Minho noticed when he arrived in the supply closet on the third floor was how dark the interior was. It was completely off putting compared to the brightness of the hallway, causing Minho to stand in the doorway for a moment so his eyes could adjust to the change. When they had, the second thing he noticed was a light from a small desk lamp at the back of the room tucked behind some metal shelving that held various medical supplies. Walking towards this light after shutting the door, he rounded the corner to see both Bonita and Bang Chan sitting in folding chairs beside each other. It caused him to let out a sigh of relief that he didn't realize he had been holding.
At the sigh, both Bonita and Bang Chan turned to face him. In doing so, they revealed a young man sitting on a folding chair in front of them.
"Seriously Bonita, every time I leave you alone you bump into another stray kid!" snapped Minho.
"Hey! Watch who's talking!" snapped Bonita back as Minho crossed his arms across his chest.
"Hi! I'm sorry to have worried you about them," said the young man as he tried to slice the awkwardness in the air before it became a full blown fight. "My name is Changbin."
"Lee Know," he said with a mutter as he leaned up against a nearby shelf. "Why are these two in the closet with you?"
"Well, you see, I'm currently an intern at this hospital. There were whispers about a Christopher Chan lookalike that came to the hospital and about what a miracle it was that he survived a fall from a thirty-five foot building without dying upon impact."
"And your point is?" asked Minho.
"The point is that the doctors are all speculating what this could mean, but I think I know. My suspicions are even more confirmed after talking to the two of them."
"We told him his real name," said Bonita as she turned to Minho as his eyes widened.
"And I believe them," added Changbin. "I used to love the show 'Bubble' too."
"Did you all disembark the same crazy bus?" muttered Minho even though he too had slowly begun to believe Bang Chan's claims, but didn't want to admit it.
"I will keep the secret," ensured Changbin as he raised his right hand as if he was going to solemnly swear.
"So what do you think happened?" asked Minho. "What's this supposed theory of yours?"
"I was just about to explain," said Changbin. "You're just in time."
