Synop: Hoseok held the other half of your heart even after it was ripped apart in your breakup a year ago. The fear of expectation and forever clawed at what you both meant to another and the pressure broke you. With the end of the world on the horizon, who will you decide to spend your last moments with, if those moments meant forever?
A/N: This is inspired by the song and MV If the World Was Ending by JP Saxe ft. Julia Michaels. I literally only listened to this when writing this, which was literally done from 5 pm to 1 am in one sitting. I guess the whole pandemic made me all sappy and sad and I had to write this. Thank you to for dealing with me randomly texting her with ABWJJKSBIBIQ and listening to the story idea. Love you! and the banner credit goes to her! look at how amazing it looks!
It was beginning to get cold. The summer season was coming to an end, the breeze getting chilly and the once lush green leaves slowly changing color, the edges becoming crisp and threatening to fall from their branches. The number of tourists has decreased as kids went back to school, the streets became less crowded, and business began to slow as well, calming down until winter came.
With a sniff, you walk through your neighborhood, glad you had decided to walk to work that morning because now you were enjoying the weather. While the wind was slightly chilly, the sunshine that kissed your face and back as you walked was pleasant.
You decided to clock out early today, especially since it was slow in the restaurant, letting your manager control for the rest of the day. While the bustling around your restaurant was nice at times, today, it was something that was not providing the distraction you needed.
You walk through the park, silently enjoying the scenery of changing leaves and dogs chasing each other or the birds. It had been a while since you were able to have time for yourself like this, where you could hear your own thoughts.
The clings of pans and sound running water was a part of the daily life you loved, but for some odd reason, today it only brought dread and a headache.
You had thought the structure that you had lost over a year ago was finally beginning to be rebuilt. Your old normal was gone, but now you were getting used to this new everyday life. Your daily life without him.
Just with the thought of him, you felt your heart clench, the back of your throat throbbing with a familiar feeling you were getting used to. With a quick shake of your head, you remind yourself. You didn't have the right to be hurt. It was your decision.
Even after a year, you remember how it went. When you brought up the breakup, he had agreed after a pause without a single argument. But neither of you could deny the pain and hurt in his gaze as he softly touched your cheek with his warm hand, pressing his lips to your forehead for the last time before leaving your apartment. Forever.
You were busy after that. Work kept you occupied, making you run around like a chicken with its head cut off. There wasn't enough time for you to mourn how your relationship of five years had ended with just a single conversation.
But now that summer has ended, and everything has slowed down, you can't help but think about him more. You really can't stop your mind from drifting off to him every time you have some time alone. He was the closest person to you in the last five years. Your families lived across the world, and you'll have to fly over the ocean to go see them. Which limited you to call them every once in a while. But they too had their own lives and were busy, and you didn't want to worry them either.
So essentially, you were alone in this big city called Los Angeles, the place of dreams and movies. You had friends, but they too had their own chaotic lives with their significant others. They were busy with work and their children, and you didn't have the heart to call them to hang out to fill your void of loneliness.
With a sigh, you climb up the stairs to your apartment, opening the door and getting greeted by the meow of your cat as he runs to you after hearing you return.
"Hi, Teddy. Mommy's home," you coo at the silver feline that weaves between your legs as you hobble into your apartment, careful not to crush him under your foot. In response, he releases a sweet meow and follows you into your bedroom, where you strip off your work clothes and replace them with sweats and an old raggy shirt. You see something at the bottom of your closet and hesitate for a second before pulling on a familiar large jumper that used to belong to Hoseok.
You bring it to your nose, inhaling softly before pulling it over your head. You feel a fog of sadness surround you as you note that it doesn't smell like him anymore. But quickly frown, scoffing at your own thought. What are you kidding? Of course, it wouldn't. It's been a year.
Shuffling to the living room, you fall face-first to the soft couch you had invested in when first moving into the apartment. You lay there, not moving and letting your minds wander without any aim. But eventually, like always, they drift to the thoughts about your ex.
Why didn't you guys work out?
Your scoff gets muffled by the cushion your face is pressed into. It wasn't that you guys didn't work out. It was quite the opposite. Everything was perfect. You felt loved, you loved, you were supposedly happy. But still, you broke up.
And you know why. It was because you weren't ready for forever. And Hoseok wasn't down for forever either. There was no denying both you and Hoseok were free souls that didn't like to be tied down. It was something all your friends and family liked to joke about. Two free souls finding love within each other.
You had left the small town you grew up in to escape from being caged and moved to LA for a new life. There you succeeded in opening a restaurant that had a steady income. You didn't let family or your past tie you down. Here in LA, you spread your wings out as much as you like.
Hoseok was the same, moving to the city from South Korea, finding a company to work at where he steadily climbed up. He followed his passion for dancing on the side, going to local art shows for Kawsone, finding happiness in simple things such as finding a new coffee shop.
And in the city of angels, movie stars, and dreams were where the two of you met. Falling in love was easy. Melting into a lifestyle where you were together, intertwining into each other's life was easier. But it wasn't easy holding up to the pressure around you.
Neither you or Hoseok were exactly young when you first met, you were twenty-five, and he was twenty-seven. Five years of dating and one year since the breakup, you were now thirty-one. As each year passed, more of your friends began to get married and have kids. And then the questions from your friends and your parents began.
So when are you two getting married?
I don't see the ring yet, is it soon?
Neither of you two are getting any younger, you know?
Am I getting grandchildren soon?
He hasn't proposed yet?
It began to be too much. The stress, the anxiety, the concern of spending the rest of your life with someone. You were scared of your own feelings. You think it was love. Or was it? Was it just the comfort of having someone with you? Can you call that love? Did you really love Hoseok enough to spend your life with him forever?
And something finally snapped in you. And you brought up the breakup talk without even thinking about it too much. It was just a simple suggestion that left your mouth one afternoon.
You were positive Hoseok had felt the same when you saw the look of relief in his eyes. There had been a tension in his shoulder whenever he got off a phone call with his mother. Neither of you could relax as you visited friends with families anymore, the loving atmosphere the couples shared with their children was too much. The talk of the future together was never brought up.
Neither of you wanted a forever. And that made you think maybe you and Hoseok weren't meant for each other after all.
And as simple as that, a five-year relationship ended without much talk. Just a simple goodbye.
No shouting. No anger. No argument. Nothing. No communication.
Just that it was ending.
And at first, you felt like that was okay. You didn't hate Hoseok, and he didn't hate you. But you let him go, and he had letten you go. Maybe that was for the best, with just the happy memory of each other and no bitterness left between the two of you.
The past year, you tried hard to forget him. But the smallest things in your life reminded you of him. Even now, just laying in the living room made you think back to when you and he cuddled there watching Titanic and other sappy romance movies while crying because you both were hopeless, emotional crybabies.
Those insignificant memories seemed to be the ones that hurt the most.
With a sigh, you finally roll off your stomach, turning your body towards the TV, your cheek still pressed into the soft fabric of the couch. With a lazy groan, you stretch out your arm to grab the remote to turn on the TV you were positive you weren't even going to watch.
You let the news play as background noise, only half paying attention as they reported some news such as a cute dog that was ready to get adopted at a local shelter. Sometimes in the middle, Teddy crawled up to your chest. The tomcat releasing loud purrs as he pressed his head under your chin as you let your fingers run through his coat that was getting thicker as the weather became colder.
You silently wondered what Hoseok was doing right now, your gaze shifting to the clock on the wall. Seeing the time, you assume he was still at work, seeing as he usually ended around five. You mindlessly wonder if he got the promotion he was talking about before the two of you broke up. You sure he did. Hoseok was a hard worker, he'll deserve it.
Your gaze shifts back to the screen as the reporter begins talking about the weather for the next week. But just as you do, you release a yelp of surprise as Teddy, who had been stretched over your chest bolts, his sharp nails puncturing the jumper and into your skin.
"What th-oh..." You freeze, watching as the ceiling lamp above you begins to sway.
Earthquake.
While your heart accelerates for a split second, you quickly relax, having grown used to having earthquakes often living in California. But you admit, that one was fairly big.
As the shaking stops, your gaze moves back to the TV to see that they were indeed live broadcasting when the earthquake happened, a look of shock on the news people's faces.
"Woah. That was the biggest we had in a while," the man on the screen releases a nervous laugh as he starts a conversation with his coworkers who are beginning to calm down as well.
You nod as if you were part of the conversation, worriedly looking around to make sure nothing fell over during the shake. But seeing as you didn't hear any crashes earlier, you assume everything was in place. However, you grow concerned for your pet cat, moving to stand up to go look for him.
However, as you do, a sharp gasp pulls your attention back to the TV. Your eyebrows furrowed as you see that the female reporter gets handed a file by a staff member. You watch as her face visibly pales, there being a pause as she reads what's given to her. After a second, her nervous gaze shifts to the camera that records and broadcast her to the public.
You sit back down, your eyes glued to the TV in concern, completely pushing the thoughts of Teddy out of your mind for a moment.
The woman releases a cough before beginning to speak, her voice slightly shaky. "We just got information that the shake we just felt wasn't actually an earthquake. A report states that the shake was created by the impact of multiple asteroids landing in various parts of the Earth. The biggest we've ever seen has landed in China and another in the pacific ocean, the size of the asteroid being estimated to be half a mile. Currently, the countries are sending out tsunami warnings."
Your mouth had fallen open somewhere in the middle. Your hand comes up to cover it as you watched the screen as it showed images of the damages filmed somehow. You felt your stomach drop at the scene, your eyes wide in disbelief.
"It has been estimated it has killed thousands in China and millions injured. From what we are getting transmitted, the impact was above the damage of the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima Japan during World War II."
It doesn't seem realistic. But the frantic scrambling of people in the news studio and the amount of papers and reports the news reporter is getting handed says otherwise. And the panic in all their eyes is real.
The meow of Teddy snaps you out of your shock and makes you move. You quickly scramble to find your phone, dialing to call your parents. The phone rings. However, no one picks up. You swallow thickly, calling them nonstop. But no one picks up. You try calling both your mother and father. But neither of them pick up.
"What the fuck. What the fuck. Fuck, pick up!" You cry out frantically, moving your finger to press the call button for the eleventh time. But before you can, the loud blare of the EAS alarm from the TV makes you flinch and drop your phone in response. At the same time, your phone also vibrates on the floor, getting a notification.
"National Alert. Normal Programming has been suspended to transmit vital messages. This following message transmission is a request of the National Aeronautics Space Administration. This is not a test. Repeat, this is not a test. At 3:23 p.m. Pacific Standard Time, an asteroid known as JPSX20, was detected in the solar system. This asteroid 7 miles wide is on a direct collision course towards Earth and is quickly approaching. Important instructions will follow."
You swallow, your heart pounding in your chest as you try to process what was being said.
Asteroid...?
No. This wasn't true.
This can't be- Before you know it, you grab hold of Teddy, who's hiding underneath the couch. You hug the feline in horror as you watch the TV, impatiently waiting for what it was revealing. It repeated what it said a couple of times before the following information was being told by the computer-generated voice.
"JPSX20 will impact Earth within one hour. The impact site is expected to be in Nevada, north of Las Vegas. Gather, family, and loved ones together and seek an underground shelter immediately. We repeat--"
Most of the sounds get cut off by the screams and chaos that began outside. Warily, you look out your window, seeing people running around, panic evident on their faces. The loud sirens are deafening, and never have you imagined your once peaceful neighborhood could fall into chaos in such a short time.
The color of the sky looks eerie, nothing like the peace you had witnessed earlier when you walked through the park. And you hold back a choke as you begin to see something large slowly becoming bigger in the sky. Gradually, you lose function in your legs, falling onto the carpet of your living room, your legs giving up on you.
Everything is surreal, but eventually, you turn off the TV to stop hearing the EAS alarm and the warning of the world ending. You look down at your hands, seeing your fingers shake as you dazedly stare at them, not knowing what to do.
A weak laugh leaves your lips as you cover your eyes with your hands. The sounds of screaming and crying from outside are painful to listen to. Swallowing thickly, you try to wet your lips. But you realize your mouth can't produce any saliva, your tongue sticking to the roof of your mouth. Shakily you go to your kitchen, grabbing a cup of water, gulping it down quickly before returning to the living room, and picking up your phone.
You call your parents again.
Neither of them picked up.
"Are you serious? You gotta be kidding me... T-The world is ending? I'm going to die?" You speak to yourself, laughing in disbelief. You can do nothing but sit there on the floor, not knowing what to do.
You blankly stare at the screen of your phone before breaking out into a sob. Your shoulder shakes as you are filled with sudden regret as you realize everything was coming to an unexpected end.
All the mistakes in your life that you haven't fixed yet. Regrets of not being with your family. Sorrows of not connecting to your friends. Regrets of breaking up with Hoseok because you were scared of your own feelings. You were scared of how real the love felt and scared that the happiness you felt might end one day.
Regrets of ending the happiness between the two of you before it could reach the peak.
Why couldn't you work it out? Why didn't you communicate? Why couldn't you have just talked about your fear instead of just ending it? Why were you so stupid...?
You look down at your phone, moving to text Hoseok, But you stop, your eyes finding that you never deleted the last conversation you had with him. And reading what the last things he sent makes tears fill in your eyes. You don't understand. You don't think you've ever opened these messages. Why didn't you see these sooner....?
Rereading the text a million times makes you make up your mind. You had no one anyways. Life was going to end in less than an hour. What was there to lose? Who cares how hard and long it takes you to try to forget Hoseok? Nothing matters anymore, and you know you might as well do it right now.
Sniffling, you press the call button, pressing your phone to your ear and listen to it ring. It rings and rings and rings and finally goes to voicemail, where you hear his chirpy voice after a whole year.
You break down.
What are you kidding? Why did you think he would pick up? It's been a year. He probably moved on. Why would he spend time to talk to you when the world was going to end? You bet he would rather be with his closest friends, his mother, his father, his older sister. Maybe a new lover.
But not you.
Because you had ended the relationship a year ago. It was your fault. You had ended the happiness the two of you shared.
You don't have the strength to even push Teddy off of you as the tomcat pushes against your face as you cry. Your heart screamed out in pain and regret. Things that could have been different if you weren't stupid.
Just as you released a shuddered breath, you hear a loud slam, your body jumping up in shock as you realize it's the sound of the door to your apartment getting opened. You're frozen in fear as the stomps of feet go through the hallway of your residence. And you're even more taken back when a disheveled form of Hoseok appears in your living room.
He hasn't changed much since the last time you have seen him. He still wears the favorite suit of his, but today it is crumbled, and he's missing his jacket. The dark bags under his eyes are prominent, but he's as handsome as ever, although his hair is all over the place.
Neither of you says anything. But Hoseok runs to you, falling onto his knees as he cups your face with his hand. You stare into his warm brown eyes as he brushes his thumb over your cheek, wiping the stream of tears that runs down.
You can't help but weakly return the small smile he gives you. "Hi."
"Hi."
You stay like that for another moment before you speak, "h-how....? I-I mean why? Why would you..." You trail off, your lips trembling as Hoseok peers into your face.
Hoseok opens his mouth, a dry laugh leaving his mouth. "I ran here as fast as I could when I learned the shit that was going on. I would have driven, but the streets are packed with people freaking out. And," the man pauses as he pulls a familiar key of your apartment from his pocket, showing it to you. "I never returned these to you."
You note that he was sweaty because of running, his chest rising and falling slowly, his heart racing under your fingertips. You slowly nod, but you're still confused by his presence in your living room. And Hoseok could probably see because he continues.
"This was the only place I could think of to come to when I learned the world was ending, and we were all going to die. You were the first person I thought about," Hoseok whispered as his hands slid down your face before wrapping his arms around you, pulling you into a warm embrace.
You swallow thickly, your shaky hands coming up to hug him back. "B-But why? I-I ruined everything, Hobi. I ruined o-our happiness, I was the reason why we ended things. I was the one-"
"And I was the one who didn't try to stop you. There's no denying I was also freaked out about the idea of marriage," Hoseok released a dry chuckle as he shook his head. "I was the one who let you go without even trying to fix things when I knew you were hurting and struggling. And I regretted every moment of it. Every moment I was away from you, I regretted it. I wanted to call, but I was a coward. But then this fucked up shit happened, and I didn't have any excuse anymore. Because if I was going to die, I wanted it to be after I told you how much you mean to me. How much I love you. And if this damn world was going to end, I want to spend the last moment with you." The man buries his face into your neck as he breathes slowly.
You release a sharp inhale at his words, your eyes watering even more.
"I'm sorry... I'm so sorry, Hobi. I regretted everything too. I was- I was scared about how much I loved you. I was stupid and thought if we broke up, the fear of the love increasing would stop. I was so stupid, I-I" you sob, your fingers clenching onto the white dress shirt he wears, crumpling it under your fingers.
Hoseok releases a low chuckle as the strength in his embrace increases. "I know, Y/N. I know. I love you so much... I know I said we might not be meant to be, but I don't actually think that. I think you were born to be here with me, Y/N. Born so I can make you happy, and you make me happy. We're each other's other half. We were made to find and love each other."
Pulling away, you look into Hoseok's face, seeing that he too was crying.
"I love you, Hobi..." You whisper, smiling weakly. You close your eyes as the man pulls you close, his lips gently pressing into your before pulling away.
"I love you too...."
When Hoseok pulls away from you, you don't understand as he pulls a small box from his pocket. But when he reveals a simple silver band, you cover your mouth with your hand, staring at it in disbelief.
Hoseok sheepishly rubs the back of his neck as he takes the ring and slips it on your finger. "After we broke up, I bought this. I couldn't help it. After seeing it, I realized how I messed up and how much I really was in love with you. All the regret and everything made me buy it, but who knew, there would be a day when I actually give it to you."
You stare at your hand, shocked at how much happiness the simple band brought you even when the thoughts of marriage were what broke the two of you apart in the first place. Slowly, you wrap your arms around Hoseok again, the man wrapping his hand around your waist.
Eventually, the two of you pull away, the two of you sitting down in the living room, facing each other while holding each other's hands.
A loud meow makes us finally break eye contact, and Hoseok releases a laugh allowing Teddy to climb into your laps, finding comfort between you and Hoseok.
"Hi buddy, wanna spend the last moment of your life with us?" Hoseok questioned, smiling weakly as he petted the feline once before retaking hold of your hand.
You stay like that, staring into each other's eyes, your forehead pressed together. And eventually, you can't even keep your eyes open with the brightness from outside.
"Hobi, I'm scared."
"Me too, Y/N. But in the end, we're together."
And you felt like that was all it mattered.
"I love you."
"I love you too, to even the end of the world."
