This is also really... really... REALLY long. Enjoy!
Jungkook's p.o.v
I pulled the drip along with me as my slippers barely made any sound in the hallways. I walked to the visiting rooms, expecting Jimin to be there, like he always was on a Wednesday afternoon.
I walked to our table and sat down. I looked down at my thin hands waiting for him to arrive.
Coughing interrupted my thoughts an hour later and I saw a small frail girl looking around whilst covering her mouth coughing.
"Hey... you okay?" I asked her getting up and making my way, slowly, over. She looked up nodding.
"I'm okay..." she looked down again. "I should go, nobody is going to come." She stood up and walked away, leaning on her pole with the drip attached.
"No one came to visit you either?" I asked quietly. She looked up and stopped. She took a shaky breath.
"They haven't for a while now." She spoke quietly. I pulled the drip behind me and followed her.
"I can visit you, I'm Jeon Jungkook." I bowed and she turned and looked at me.
"Y/N." Her voice was quiet. I pulled out a chair for her and smiled and she slowly sat down. I walked over to the game cupboard and brought out connect four. I carried it over with shaky hands and she caught it before I dropped it. I sat down and she set it up.
A few hours of a silence passed and she slumped forwards a yawn leaving her lips.
"I should really get going. Thank you Jungkook." She smiled for the first time since I saw her.
"I'll walk you back." I pushed myself up from my seat and helped her up gently and we both started walking.
We were on the same ward, I was two rooms down.
—
Three weeks passed and we often sat in the visiting room playing games with each other now. But occasionally we would visit each others rooms.
"Why are you here then?" I asked quietly.
"I have stage four lung cancer." Her voice was quiet.
"You smoked-?" My eyes were wide. She shook her head.
"We don't know why I got it apart from it's been in the family." She shrugged slightly laying in her bed as I sat on the edge. "What about you?"
"A brain tumour, I'm due surgery in a week. But I need to stay here permanently until I'm completely cured." I smiled and she nodded.
"I don't get why you want to be friends with me." Her voice cracked. "The doctors don't seem to think that the medication is working and they doubt that I'll last two more years."
"Because, despite all that you've been there for me." I smiled at her and tears brimmed her eyes. I leant down and hugged her tightly and she started sobbing. Her hands fisting my shirt and pulling me close.
—
"Yah! Jungkook!" She giggled walking through the hospital garden. It was the night before my surgery.
"Slow down!" I laughed quietly and walked after her. We made it to the fountain and she sat down on the edge. Out of breath.
I sat beside her and she leant her head on my shoulder.
"Are you scared?" She asked quietly. I nodded slightly.
"Yeah." I ran a hand through my hair and she took my other hand into hers. Something we always did for each other if we got scared.
"Well don't be, because I'll be waiting there with open arms for you when you get out." She spoke quietly. "Just promise me when you're healed you'll come visit me?"
"Of course." I smiled and looked down at her as she lifted her head. Our eyes met and before I knew it we were both leaning in. Our lips brushing against each other's before I reconnected our lips properly.
"Be mine?" I asked quietly when we pulled away. She looked hesitant for a second before nodding.
"Of course Jungkook." She pecked my lips again before she hugged me.
"Should we head back in?" I noticed her shivering and she nodded. I helped stand her up and we walked inside.
—
I was on the bed being wheeled towards the operating room.
"Yah! Jungkook wait!" I heard her before I saw her. I looked over and saw her in a wheelchair speeding towards me as fast as she could. She stopped a few metres away and walked towards me.
"Miss Y/N you need to hurry."
"Stay strong in there!" She handed me a soft plush as she smiled brightly. "Come out and we can finish our connect four game!" She kissed my forehead gently. "Hwaiting!" She cheered before the doctors wheeled me further away. "I love you!" She called. My heart fluttered and I smiled.
"I love you too." I whispered in return.
—
I'd been in ICU for a few days and there hadn't been a sign of Y/N. I slid out the bed, The nurse helping me since the doctor finally said I could. I stood slowly and my legs wobbled slightly before I took a step and she guided me the whole way to the chair a few meters away.
"Knock Knock~" in the doorframe was my hyungs. I smiled up at them and the nurse giggled.
"I'll have to stay close at hand just in case." She spoke quietly. "Don't bombard your poor friend too much."
They nodded and I let out a sigh.
"How do you feel Jungkook?" Jin walked over and sat on the bed.
"The headache has gone." I smiled softly. "Although the actual wound stings a little bit if the nurse does my hair."
"Well that's good." Jimin grinned. "We brought more clothes for you." He held out the bag. I smiled.
"Thank you-"
"Hello? Is this Jungkook Oppa's room?" The voice made me break out into a bigger smile and I looked away so Jin and Jimin wouldn't notice.
"Yeah, would you like to see him?" Namjoon asked and the boys split and she stood there leaning against her drip. A mask covering her nose and mouth.
"Jungkook." She smiled and I met her eyes and all the boys looked between us.
"Y/N!" I smiled cheerfully and she giggled softly walking over and standing beside me.
"I'm so glad to see you okay, they moved someone into your room and I got worried-" she mumbled quietly.
"I'll be back on the ward by the end of tomorrow. Don't worry." I slid my hand into hers and it was cold. I looked around slowly and saw the bag the boys had brought with a jacket on top. I slowly stood up and wrapped the jacket around her.
"W-What are you doing?" She stuttered her eyes wide.
"You feel cold." I replied simply and she nodded slightly.
"Don't forget about us, who is your lady friend Jungkook?" Hoseok chuckled.
"This is Y/N, my girlfriend." I helped her sit on the edge of the bed before sitting down on the chair again. The boys all smirked apart from Jimin.
"I already knew this because I kicked both their asses at the board games." He chuckled.
—
I moved back onto the ward and I was able to walk about more now as long as I had rests in between.
I made it to her room and saw her fiddling with something.
"Ah Jungkook! You're here!" She giggled softly before coughing. I sat her up with the remote and she smiled.
"You've got your hair done today, what's the occasion?" I chuckled and she blushed slightly.
"I want to give you something, but it's not quite complete." She mumbled quietly. The nurse then walked in.
"Ah, I was looking for you Jungkook!" She giggled softly and walked over to the drawer beside me and pulled out a camera. The nurse took a few steps back. "Smile for the camera."
We both smiled and the camera shutter went off.
"One more..." The nurse had a smirk this time which made me worried slightly.
Then I understood why when Y/N's lips were against my cheek, causing my smile on to turn into a look of shock and the camera shutter went off.
"Thank you." Y/N smiled. "Can I look at them?" The nurse nodded and brought the camera over to her. Whenever I tried to look she swatted me away. I huffed and poured and she giggled. "My friend should be in the waiting room for the ward, can you give him the camera please?" The nurse nodded and I sighed softly.
"I wanted to see them-" my hand automatically flew to the slightly bald patch.
"Don't worry about your bald patch." She used her cold hands to cup my cheeks and hold my head facing her. "You still look handsome as always."
I smiled softly blushing.
"Stop..." I mumbled looking down. She giggled. "I'm meant to be getting discharged by the end of the week..."
"Oh..." She squeaked. Tears brimming her eyes.
"So I was going to wait but here..." I pulled out a small box and her eyes met mine. "I thought you should have a pretty gift."
I opened the box and in it was a simple ring that wasn't too flashy and a necklace. Her bottom lip started wobbling.
"Aish, don't cry!" I panicked and she giggled weakly.
"This is one of the nicest things anybody has done for me. C-Can you put it on for me?" She asked quietly. I nodded and she lifted her hair slightly and I put the necklace on her and then slid the ring on her.
"What's number one?"
"Number one is allowing me to meet you." She whispered.
—
Two days later was when a nurse rushed into my room with a wheelchair.
"I don't have time for explaining right now. Please just come with me." She spoke fast and I nodded standing up and then going to the wheelchair. She practically ran down the hallway and stopped outside Y/N's room.
"What's going on?"
"She's deteriorating too fast, she doesn't have long left to live. She just wants you."
I nodded slowly and stood up slowly and as I entered the room it was like everything stopped for a minute. She seemed so much smaller than she did when I saw her the previous evening, and paler too.
"Jungkook is that you?" She squeaked.
"Yeah." My voice broke.
"Lay with me for a bit?" She sounded so weak. I walked over and laid beside her. Her small frame wrapped around me almost instantly, her head resting on my chest. "I'm so cold... it hurts..."
"Don't speak, don't waste your energy." I whispered quietly. She nodded slightly and I wrapped my arms around her gently, holding back the tears.
We laid there like that for an hour before her heart rate dropped more. "Jungkook?" She whispered, her eyes barely open.
"Yes jagiya?" I whispered in return.
"Kiss me." She was very blunt. I nodded and she tilted her head up and I leant down. Our lips connecting and her hand locked with mine. Grasping onto it as if it would stop her from dying-
She pulled away for air a few minutes later gulping air down her lungs.
"Jungkook, it hurts so much-" she whimpered.
"Then let... let go." I whispered quietly and rubbed her back.
"Are you sure?" She paused taking a breath. "You won't be lonely or upset if I do?"
"I won't be lonely because you'll still be in my heart." I replied holding back the tears.
"Can you promise me one thing?" Her voice was barely above a whisper. "Promise me that you'll continue living your life, for me."
"I... I promise."
"Jungkook, one last thing." Her grip loosened and she opened her eyes again, she smiled as bright as she could before going back to cuddling into me. A lot looser than before.
"Yes?"
"I love you."
"I-I love you too." And she smiled brightly before everything seemed to leave her. I let a small sob leave my lips and a nurse popped her head in hearing the flatline.
"I need to call the doctor in to confirm and then I'll let you two be." I nodded and held back the tears.
"Time of death, seven forty five pm." The doctor spoke and then wrote down. Once he and the nurse left that's when I let it all out. Sobbing and shaking.
"Why did you leave me?" I sobbed feeling so pathetic at it all. After half an hour of laying there sobbing I realised I should leave her to rest. I took a shaky breath and lifted her off me before laying her back down. I saw the necklace around her neck and forced a smile onto my cheeks.
I stood up and pressed a kiss to her forehead. "I love you." I knew I wouldn't hear it back and I turned and left the room.
When I left the room there stood Jimin with open arms and I practically fell into them sobbing once more.
—
Just under a week later and it was the funeral. Her friend had planned it and had asked me to speak there too.
So that explained how I was stood there, without any form of coverage on my head to cover the bald spot I had just because she had said I still looked handsome.
"So you're probably wondering how I grew to know Y/N." I spoke quietly. "I had seen her around in the ward a few times before I actually spoke to her, and I only spoke to her because neither of our visitors had turned up. So we played connect four for the rest of the afternoon. And a few weeks later you could definitely see the change in both of us. We both felt happier and looked happier to those around us. So we continued being friends despite either of our conditions could have turned at any moment." I paused. "I started developing feelings for her early on, and we both became really close. That's when we got together and damn, she made me so happy. And that in turn had an influence on my hyungs and even the staff around us. We got together the night before my surgery, and the day of my surgery was when we said our first 'I love you's to each other. She said it first because she came up to me just before they took me in, and gave me a plush toy. I believe that if I had known her longer I would have felt the full affects of knowing her. She could have been someone who could have changed the world so easily, but she got taken from us too soon." I bowed my head the tears shaking my body once more. "I h-hope she's up there now watching us, and she's not in pain anymore. Rest well." With that I stepped off the little podium and went back to my seat.
The sobs continued quietly until she was lowered into the ground. After that I went and sat under a tree, pulling the small plush toy out my pocket and holding it.
"Jungkook, right?" A voice spoke quietly. I looked up and saw a child that looked like her stood there holding a small bag.
"Yes, why?"
"I'm Y/N's little sister. I just wanted to thank you for making my Unnie so happy. I was too sick to come visit her, so she called me every day and she sounded so happy whenever she would mention your name..." she spoke teary eyed. "Her friend didn't want to interrupt you right now to give you this. It's from her." She held out the bag.
"Thank you." I smiled weakly and she handed me the bag.
"Bye bye Jungkook oppa!" She giggled before waving and running back to her parents.
I looked into the bag and there was a larger box and a smaller one. I opened the larger one first and in it were two picture frames. I looked at the pictures and recognised them from the ones the nurse took. I smiled at the first one and then let out a chuckle at the second one.
I put them back in the box and then opened the smaller one. In it was a locket necklace, and I popped it open and there were the same pictures. I smiled and clasped the chain around my neck.
In the bottom of the bag there was an envelope. I put both boxes back in after I had pulled the envelope out.
'Jungkook Oppa' on the front.
I opened it and began reading.
'Hi Jungkook,
It's me. And by me I mean Y/N! If you're reading this I've died, and most probably with you by my side as that's what I wanted. However I'm so sorry I put you through sitting there with that. Nobody wants to sit there and watch the person they love die.
But anyway this is a letter because I wouldn't have been able to say all I wanted to say when I had began deteriorating.
One. Jungkook I was depressed before we met, I mean who wouldn't be? If you were nineteen and got told you'd die before you were able to have kids, live like a normal person, marry, fall in love- you wouldn't be too happy would you? But at least I can mark off one thing. I fell in love. Meeting you was the best thing to happen to me in my life.
Two. Don't stay stuck to me for the rest of your life, move on, find the girl and marry her. Even if that means eventually you take off the locket.
Three. The first few months of me being gone will be hard, and according to my friend she thinks you might become depressed considering she's a nurse that took care of you and you were once depressed like me. But no matter how much you want to join me, you can't okay? I couldn't forgive myself if you ever died an unnatural death.
Four. I love you so much Jungkook. I never thought you could fall in love so quickly and so much in that time I knew you. But then again I had seen you around on the ward previously and I fell in love then. The little smile you used to do around your friends so they didn't know how much pain you were in, your laugh and just you in whole.
Anyway, it's getting late and I'm running out of paper. I'll see you soon, when you're an old man with wrinkles and your lovely brown hair turns grey. But even then I'll know it's you because of those eyes. They won't ever change.
Love you, Y/N x'
I sighed quietly, having ran out of tears to cry. "I love you too." I spoke up at the sky.
